Decent Breathalyzer to Recommend?

In light of the new rules in VIC, I've decided it's time to invest in a portable unit, just to be sure after some bevvies

I came across "Andatech", however it appears that it needs re-calibration periodically, which can be expensive and time consuming

Do you currently use a breathlyazer that's accurate and that you would recommend?

No specific budget in mind

Cheers!

however it appears that it needs re-calibration periodically

They should all be re-calibrated periodically, but some just won't state that on the box.

Remember that they're used for indicative purposes only and should you get busted for DUI, you can't rely on the reading you got as evidence.

Time to switch - In VIC, drug testing only tests for THC in weed, meth and E's. Switch to C from a good supplier who doesn't cut it with any of the above - It's a bit more expensive, but much lower chance of getting busted! (Disclaimer coming…. haha) :P

All of them need costly regular recalibration to be accurate.
I've concluded it is best not to drink more than a glass or two if driving.

      costly recalibration

      I’ve got this one http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Alcolimit-Defender-…

Got it 20% about a year ago.
Also bought a pack of straws and a case to keep everything together.
I haven’t recalibrated it yet but the first one is free and then they are like $45. It only needs it done every 6-8 months and it should tell you when it’s needed.

Not a lot imo to be sure the next morning or after dinner given the new laws.

    • it is best not to drink more than a glass or two if driving.

Problem is, a shorter light person with an inefficient liver could be well over from 2 glasses, whereas a taller heavier person with a more efficient liver could have 3 or 4 glasses and still blow under.

I agree that personal breathos are quite impractical however.

  • I think it could give someone a false sense of security - not really worth the risk in my humble opinion.

Don't drink and intend to drive after :)

How's the view from up there in your ivory tower?

By the way, I hope you've never driven a vehicle after only 7 hours sleep(not to mention less than that), because that's typically more of an impairment than a glass of red with dinner.

        • +1

I doubt many people are buying a personal breathalyzer for their "glass of red with dinner", but sure.

          @omgitzrick:

Where did I mention anything about that?

I replied to a comment that flat out stated "don't drink and intend to drive after :)". But sure, nice strawman.

They'll tell you the same even if you're not behind the wheel though…

get yourself a mrs they'll always tell you when you've had too much to drink who'll come pick you up from the bar!

There! Corrected that for you! haha

Just drive through a booze bus and compare your results with what the cops have

  • I use this
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Portable-Digital-Breath-…
And it has served me well.
Just on Sunday, my wife and I were at a birthday party, and we both tested. I was 0.02% and my wife was 0.05%, which was what we expected
She had 3 glasses of white wine in 2 hours, I had about 4 beers. I have a better alcohol absorbing capacity ( more weight )

  • I bought a BACtrack C6 Keychain Breathalyser from ebay for the same reason. It appears to work well if you follow the instructions and have not eaten or drank anything for 15 minutes before the test. I'm assuming that it will be cheapest to throw it out and buy a new one rather than getting it recalibrated.

I suggest you get in the habit of not driving at all after drinking. Writing is on the wall for zero blood level becoming law so get used to it.

    • Zero tolerance laws are coming in all forms as society grows harsher in response to its failure to adapt.
      Yay for all of us

Before driving your car test yourself on your mates alcohol interlock fitted to their car. If you can start their car… Safe to drive yours…your honor…

  • A swag may be cheaper and more fun than waking up in a cell ,

  • Is a personal tester useful or do you get pissed every night :) Like I mean is there enough regular need for testing to justify the purchase, many clubs pubs etc have them mounted on walls an coin operated for just the once every few weeks usage wouldn't they be better

If you need something to test almost every time you drive get something fitted to the car instead

This is similar to what the cops use in NZ. Drager is a massive medical equipment company. They are expensive but precise (we used to compare…).

They all need recalibration at varying lengths of time and use.
