Photoelectric Smoke Alarm 10-Year Battery - $20.99 + Shipping ($9.95) @ Family First (Acceptable in All States except QLD)

10

Was sick of replacing batteries in smoke alarms each year. Bunnings cheapest was 29.95 for a similar product. Please note that these should not be used in QLD as they do not comply with new standards.

Assuming 9v battery is $4 and depending on how many you purchase to spread the cost of shipping, they the devices should pay for themselves in 6 years (not including time saved getting new batteries, swapping them out land the land fill these batteries would most likely go to).

Could be useful to replace 9v battery based alarms in PPOR or IP.

Edit: Just for clarity it's not a bargain if you are purchasing just one BUT if you are purchasing multiple to replace all alarms in your house it will be more cost effective (min 2 to become more cost effective). e.g. 2 * 20.99 + 9.99 = ~$52 vs 2*29.95 = ~$60.

  • So by saying equivalent at Bunnings is $29.95 this is actually therefore more expensive and hence not a bargain?

Generally you're going to be replacing all the older battery style ones in your house with the 10 year one (I replaced 6 for example) But you are correct if it was replacing just one.

    • yeah, im confused - i can get the same from bunnings for $29.90 and go pick it up now..

it's not a bargain if you are purchasing just one BUT if you are purchasing to replace all alarms in your house it may be more cost effectively. e.g. 6 * 20.99 + 9.99 = ~$135 vs 6*29.95 = ~$180.

Going to update the original post to make this a bit more clear.

Bought a few of these from Bunnings recently, seemed like a great idea. Will be keeping the receipts for the long term too, if they die in 9 years 6 months I will be taking them in for a refund :)

    • How dare these die in the same decade

  • What makes you think they don't apply in QLD? Pretty sure these are fine unless you rent.

Photo & Interconnected detectors are required:

So these are fine in QLD unless you plan on putting it into a new or 'substantially' reno'd home.. If you're just replacing existing smoke alarms it's fine.

        • Yep, until 2027… all detailed above.

@SteveAndBelle: so I can only use them for 9 years? Bugger lol

        • +1

@Slippery Fish: Ha, yep… if you don't plan to sell or move then you'll 'only' get about 8.7 years out of one of these :)

      Not a 10 year battery!

      • You are right - I did not notice that!

    • if you want a 9v battery version you can get them for $12 from Bunnings

      • So that would make it $31 total which well makes it the same price as this deal here. But that's not factoring in the transport cost to get to the Kmart store to get the smoke alarm and then travel to the Bunnings store to get the battery. In that case factoring in the travel costs that the total price would be more than $31.

        • Nor the cost of replacement 9V batteries once every 12 months as recommended by the manufacturers. If the 10-year battery models can in fact last for 10 years then for $30 they represent reasonable value… but as I'm in QLD I'd need a 10-year battery model with wireless interconnect which I assume is a lot more than anything mentioned here. $200+ was the last price I saw for one about 18 months ago which is what prompted me to just install hardwired interconnected devices instead however I'd say 10-year battery models with wireless interconnection would be cheaper now.

        • You misunderstood. The entire alarm with battery is $12.90 from Bunnings
          https://www.bunnings.com.au/firepro-photoelectric-9v-smoke-a…

I agree that this deal is worth considering rather than 9v battery options

        • @hen dawg:

The details says nothing about it coming with a 10 year battery. This just comes a normal battery that you replace yearly that you could probably buy for $3 on its own.

But i would have a say that this Family First smoke alarm would have better build quality than that $12.90 smoke alarm from Bunnings.

I'd rather a smoke alarm that took AA batteries, to be honest.

    • yes they'd be perfect for eneloops.

But then again I haven't replaced my batteries for over 5yrs. I test them every 6mths, but they're still fairly full (since they run off mains & only have battery as backup).

    • The manufacturers might be afraid of the AA batteries becoming dislodged from the metal contacts on the smoke alarm if it gets knocked making it useless.

However the clip on the smoke alarm for the 9V battery holds the metal contact onto the battery firmly.
