Ford Falcon 2006 LPG Engine Shakes and Rattles When on AC or Driving Uphill

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a 2006 Ford Falcon XT factory fitted LPG and I have realised a very annoying problem with it. When I turn on the AC or trying to move uphill or if I push the gas pedal and try to ask the car for a bit more torque, the car starts to rattle and shake. It's like the engine is suffocating and can't breathe properly. It's gas consumption is also enormously high. I fill up the tank and less than 200k I need to refill it again. I've changed the spark plugs, the coils, the air filter, engine oil, oil filter and it's still the same. It's really killing me with its heavy body and low torque as well as its high fuel consumption. Any idea what could be the issue? Please, any idea is welcome and I appreciate it. Many thanks and I look forward to your responses.

Cheers,
Nima

    Broken engine mount maybe?

When was the LPG last serviced?

On 2016, the mechanic (who I brought the car to get the pink slip) told me it's fine to drive for 10 years so the next inspection is due on 2026 so I've trusted him.

lol what. Thats terrible advice and you need a new mechanic

        • Surely I need 😂. I know basics from maintaining the car. If a mechanic says something, I would normally accept and trust.

        • that would be the gas tank inspection/certification that last 10 years, not a general engine service.

  • My commodore did that, from memory the air intake valve was jammed so the ECU couldn't properly control airflow. Ended up running rich, causing rough idle, engine shake and being on the verge of stalling at low speed.

    • Issues are almost the same. Did you fix it and if yes, did the issue go away or it didn't?

My mechanic fixed it so I can't say exactly what was done, but yes all the issues went away.

        • Thanks enceladus94,and was it expensive to repair?

        • @Nimazzz: He did it as part of my regular service price, which was like $250

        • @enceladus94:
          Ok, cool, thanks 👍

  • You know its going to blow right ??

    BOOM

    :)

    • Haha, you're not a mechanic, are you? 😀

  • My calais would sometimes shake extremely violently whilst under heavy load and at idle.

Turned out being a vacuum leak under the supercharger. Once I replaced all the lower intake manifold gaskets & put a smaller blower pulley on it's been running awesome.

  • Was about to say it sounds alot like a vacuum leak.

  • If its dual fuel, run it on petrol until fixed.

If its running ok on petrol then its a lpg problem and changing the spark plugs, the coils, the air filter, engine oil, oil filter is not going to fix the lpg problem.

You really need to get it to a lpg mechanic.

I take it s one of those LPG only E-gas Falcons? not dual fuel?

Best option is like many here do with LPG cars find a TAXI mechanic as they deal with LPG and Falcons daily. Ask a cab driver at a cab rank for their Taxi mechanic number or address he'll probably be able to diagnose it merely by description of problem these mechanics are seeing common problems everyday

Yes, mine is a factory fitted LPG car. I like the idea, I'll ask a couple of taxi drivers tomorrow and see which mechanic they trust the most. Thanks 😉

  • Post your problems here on the LPG section of the ford forums

I've requested to join but it's not approved yet. Waiting…

  • I had a 2007 lpg ford and a common problem which gave the above symptons was the PCV valve. The hose can blow off these or the valve has destroyed itself easy to change if the valve is still intact, and they dont cost much. Hope this is your problem as it is an easy fix.

    • What do you mean by blow off Brenny? Should I expect a physical damage to it? Cuz I've checked mine and it's pretty much solid (not sure what's happening inside of it though).

  • Sounds like your muffler bearings are shot.

  • As you are burning way too much fuel then either stepper motor on top of the gas evaporator is stuck open, or the O2 sensor in the exhaust is telling the computer that the engine is running lean and therefore opening up the stepper motor to let more fuel in. My advice would be to change the stepper motor and the O2 sensor. These will cost less than a tank of gas. They are not hard to swap out as the stepper is on the outlet of the gas evap and so there is minimal gas escape ie not continuously pressurised with log vapour.
There is also the possibility of a continuous leak from the primer valve but this would them make it a pig to start due to extreme excess of gas while cranking

    • Wow, thanks davefoster3029. I guess it's a good idea to change these two things first before I get disappointed and bring the car to a mechanic. Where do you recommend to get these items? As these are Ford genuine parts, would you recommend ebay? I'm not sure if I could find them at autobarn or supercheap auto.

      • eBay parts are cheap enough. There are often sellers that bundle these two parts. Most sell both so you can at least get combined postage

  • If you need confirmation about the stepper motor and O2 sensor then get a manual 'power valve' into the gas vapour line to the mixer and wind it down until you get good idle and good response at high demand. Try not to go severely lean or you might get a severe backfire under load. Not good for nerves or the air box lol. Often taxis run with a 'gutted' stepper motor and a power valve as this is a lot more reliable and only marginally less fuel efficient. Probably less used lately as old mixer systems are all but obsolete. I keep power valve in the car boot in case stepper motor goes cactus. You can electrically disconnect stepper, push it fully open then refit it with the power valve and it will at least get you going. Engine ECU seems to take no notice of the fault condition

  • Hi everyone,
    An update on the issue:
I've changed the pcv valve, oxygen sensor, filters spark plugs and the issue was fixed by changing the whole set of coils eventually. I can still feel a bit of vibration when the carcis idle and the engine starts a bit rough in the morning but apart from these two issues car runs and drives smoothly.
Thanls guys for sharing your valuable thoughts with me 😊👍
