Will this tour take people to the shop and force spending?

My friend got backmail and kept in shop with gaye closed bemand pur hase X amount before they got release.

    • +7

A true OzBargainer would still be in captivity, refusing to shop at recommended retail or inflated prices.

    • +7

      These sound like shopping activities:
Day 4: You will then learn about Jade, China’s most precious and celebrated stone, and its
manufacturing process at the largest Jade factory in Beijing.
Day 5: Afterward, experience the oriental foot massage at a traditional Chinese medical centre where you will learn about
alternative treatments for illness and have the chance to consult a Chinese Medical professional.

      • Buy jade ores and gamble on the jade quality. 100% lose.

      • Would they still make you go if you fell ill on day 4 and 5?

    • Yeah this tour sounds like one of those where they force you to spend exorbitant amounts of money at stores which have connections to the tour guides - would not recommend!

  • That’s how they can have the prices so low.

  • +2

$400 extra from Perth and $300 single supplement charge make this not so cheap for some.

  • +5

Similar like in Las Vegas, you’ll get a free $100 gamble money if attend an investment conference. The whole package is cheaper than the airfare. With this price, you’ll most likely be forced to buy overpriced stuff. If you buy, you will be unhappy. If you don’t, guide will make you unhappy. Either way the trip will suck. My advice: travel, book everything yourself and download a voice English-Mandarin translator app, you’re good to go!

I wonder how many people have been waiting for a deal with this !!!

  • +3

Just use this for flights and refuse to go on activities? Can't make you, right?

    • I think they restrict you…you must not leave the group at any point in time

      • Because CHINA!

  • +2

Personally would stick to the $214 flights to Haikou and self plan.

Get to skip the day long shopping tours and go where you like - accommodation, food, travel are cheap anyway.

  • +3

Did the 8 days for $588 and it was amazing value.
Was three nights in Beijing which was really the minimum you'd want there.
We got taken to the pearl factory, jade factory and chinese medicine factory.
We found the pressure to buy was much lower in China than most other Asian countries.
The worst we got was at the Chinese medicine where they removed our foot soak with a flounce immediately after we said we didn`t need anything.
The rest didn, even bother to follow us around.

    • You were lucky. I have heard a lotbof negative srories from family n friends.

      • Are your family & friends from China/Chinese/or Speaking Chinese? If so, yep quite likely - if not - not sure where did they go - the cities on the itinerary are the top major cities in China with strong governance in tourist market, let along foreign tourists - these blackmail ones generally occur in tourists attractions remote to major cities.

  • Good value IF you aren't forced to buy anything or tip. There's a foreigners hotline you might need if you find yourself in trouble with tour operators.

  • Do we need a visa for this tour

    • +3

No, you can just tip your hat at the immigration officer of an oppressive Communist dictatorship and walk right into the country.

    • Yes you do, 120 per person if you go to visa office yourself.

  • These tours are available for $99 if you are a Chinese citizen living abroad.

  • No idea why some here think these are forced shopping excursions. You've got the return airfare, hotel accommodation. Skip the group day trips and do your own thing if you wish. You're not taken at gunpoint every morning to the tour bus !

    • i'd assume the day tours lead to the next hotel / city.
you might need to organise to meet up later with the bus to get there, if they allow it.

      • You're probably right @dasher. The short schedule may mean you've got no choice but to day trip with the tour group. Still, for such a price I'd check out whether it's possible to make your own way to each night's accommodation. Not sure how tight they'd be on such a thing.

        • I think they restrict you…you must not leave the group at any point in time

You normally stay in a 4 or 5 star hotel in the outskirt. There's nothing around the hotel. Even after dinner, you don't have anywhere to go

    • Have you done this? I have relatives who have been on these tours and were locked in shops until they bought something

      • These were large shops buzzing with tourists. Can`t imagine how they could lock you in.

        • jewelry store. mind you, this was in hong kong

  • They are pretty tight on allowing you to leave the bus. I had to pretend I was sick in shanghai to be able to do our own thing. We did the 10 day tour and you had to be on the bus and give your passport to check into the next hotel.

Lots of hotels they changed on the day to he further out than originally meaning it was really hard to get around.

Maps are also hard, even if you have a VPN, google is pretty outdated.

You spend more time in the shopping places than you do at the landmarks.

They never forced us to buy, but most people will buy on the tour so you don't have to!

  • A friend of mine is doing the 3 week shopping tour in China for the same price. She has a chinese background so I am curious to see what the tour is like.
