$5 Per Month for 1 Movie Ticket Per Month, $7 for 2 Tickets Per Month (Billed Annually) (+ $10 Activation Fee) @ Sinemia

WinterSaleWatchCinemaWatchDeadpoolFamilySale

Looks like they've just launched in Australia but not much info about it yet. Currently supported cinemas are severely lacking in all major cities at the moment, no idea if that's just because they haven't added more yet. Does anyone have any more info?

Edit: I bit the bullet and signed up. I'm hoping that it would be easy to cancel if they don't add more cinemas given that their whole motto is "Any cinema, any time".

Edit 2: There are a lot more participating cinemas in the app compared to those on the site. Almost all the major ones from what I can see, more info in the comments.

Edit 3: Make sure you enter the coupon to see the pricing. The website does not always automatically apply it, sometimes the correct pricing isn't even displayed. Try again later if it's not. If (high) pricing exists for multiple days, mark expired.

22/6 Mod note: See this comment. Warning that users are being told to pay a $4.99 - $9.99 fee to be able to use the service immediately (despite the annual fee having been already paid).

31/7: Activation fee reported to be $10 in all cases.

    • chargeback on the card..or maybe your account got cancelled as you were buying popcorn combos?

      • Nope, just like almost all other membership cancellations they cancelled mine as I was actually using the membership to buy tickets.

  • App was just updated on Android. After not being able to buy an advanced ticket the whole of last week, I'm now getting a new error message: https://imgur.com/kr5cl2p

Supposedly Sinemia will be issuing us with permanent virtual cards but no time frame is given. Can't say I have much confidence that we'll have a usable service anytime soon.

    • Yeah I started getting that error 2 days ago, still getting it (haven’t updated today’s version and it’s not asking me to for some reason)

Update: the new version has a new payment processing screen but still gives me the error after

    • I can't book. It asked me to update the app which I did but it still won't let me buy tickets.

    • I'm also getting this, though it makes me pay the processing fee before it will give me the error message. Hopefully these are only holds and I won't actually get charged. Is anyone actually still able to book tickets?

  • +1

Interesting read from Indiewire interview with Founder/CEO of Sinemia and all the issues people are having.

    https://www.indiewire.com/2019/04/sinemia-ceo-rifat-oguz-mov…

    • It actually made me angry reading his responses

      • Yeah he dodged and didn't really answer to any of the issues. Underplaying the outages, VCC not working, false terminations. If they want to become mainstream they have alot of issues to resolve, reduce complexity of purchasing tickets and provide a customer support phone number where you can call and get issues resolved on the spot.

  • Just got charged the $1.80 processing fee when unsuccessfully trying to book an advance ticket.

    • same here but the money got refunded within 30mins

  • So I have been a very strong supporter of Sinemia. You HAVE to accept that they will have issues being a start up and rapidly expanding. However I am about to give up….I have not been able to book ANY movie over the last month. The app opens, I can select the cinema and when selecting the movie it just hangs and then returns to selecting the movie (therefore I can not get passed that).

    I have tried
    - Selecting different cinemas
    - Selecting different movies
    - Logging out and back in to the app
    - Deleting and re-installing the app

But nothing works. (My phone is an iphone). So I contacted Sinemia on Twitter last week. My experience to date is that they respond within 4-12 hours. Its been a WEEK an no response. I have followed up daily with a "Can someone please respond" message, just in case they missed the first but NOTHING.

It feels like they are deliberately blocking people from booking to save money. They are cancelling people for no reason as well.

Anyone else in the similar situation….

    • Same situation here.. previously it was saying that I needed to update the app (when I was already on the latest version). Now after the convenience fee payment screen I get an error that the service is down for maintenance. Emailed and FB messaged them a few times but no reply. Even sent a message to the website quoted on the indiewire article. On the verge of pursuing a chargeback..

      • I just found this :

        https://www.sinemia.com/appfeedback

Apparently something they have just launched. I have put a note in there, lets see what happens.

What I find funny is that once you submit your request it says "Once again, please update your app to the latest version and try again". Its funny as I have had NO communication with them but clearly all they do is say "P Lease update your app" as a stock response…

        • Just got this response:

          Hi,

Our backend system is being improved for a better Sinemia experience.

Once the improvement is completed, you will be able to use our service again.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

          Best regards,

          Michael.
          Sinemia Support Team

…but I haven't been able to use the service for more than a week :-/

    • +1

You have been the most ardent supporter and you are about to give up..think about the other mortal souls…

      • Believe me I get that…but a month without service is just stupid.

An update is now, without an update to the app, I am able to use it again. I guess they are turning on people's access as / when they complain….

        • Are you able to book again?

          • @stockastics: Well to be honest not sure but I can now get past the last issue where it would just fail to move on once I selected a movie. Will try this weekend and see if I can now actually book…

  • If anyone had there account deleted you can request a review via this link: https://www.sinemia.com/misuse

  • Pretty goddamn pissed off. I'm getting the error message to update app but it is the latest. I've had a few hiccups redeeming my 2 movies per month but overall I'm ahead and only have 2 months left to go. I've tweeted them and they've seen message but no response.

    • Filling out the feedback form got rid of the need to update error for me but gave me a new maintainence error about updating to a permanent virtual card.
      https://www.sinemia.com/appfeedback

People on Reddit who stated with the maintenance error who filled out the form are now saying they can buy tickets so the form definitely does something.

I think they've replaced the bans with shadow bans so they don't have to issue refunds.

      • Also getting a new error after sending the feedback form. Wonder how long it's going to take them to finish the "upgrades"…

        • +1

My error message went back to "Update the app" a day after filling out the feedback form.

They also didn't respond to the twitter message I sent them.

I'm guessing they've run out of money and are desperately trying to stall for time. If they can't afford tickets now, I don't think they have any chance once the new avengers movie comes out.

    • I have tweeted them DAILY for 10 days straight and NO RESPONSE of any type. Normally its 2-6 hours so clearly they are struggling OR deliberatly ignoring customers, either way its VERY poor form…

      • I was facing this issue of update app from tomorrow when I tried to book my Avengers ,but can't due to update error.Agter filling that feedback fom 3-5 times app worked and booked my ticket .So if you want to book ticket fill that form after every an hour so .

  • I have used 7 months of service..can I do charge back? Haven't been able to book anything since a month..

  • After trying every day for the last week I finally got a card no. for a movie today and surprise surprise..it didn't work. I tried directly with Event cinemas and it was declined then tried through Paypal and says it was already linked to another Paypal account.

    • Cancel the advance ticket and generate a new one.

    • I always go to hoyts so I'm not sure if event is supposed to work without using paypal but if the card they give you is already linked to another paypal you can can cancel the advance ticket and start again and they'll give you a different one.

If the card won't work the 2nd time the advance tickets should automatically cancel after 2 hours and let you try again, you should be able to do this as many times as you like as long as you have a 2 hour gap. I've never gone more than 3 cards without getting one that would link to paypal.

  • I can get VCC today and managed to book tickets for Shazam!

  • Just booked a couple of tickets today at event cinemas.

    • woah! were you getting app update error before?

      • I was getting the update error yesterday but was able to book tickets today. My first card was linked to another paypal but I cancelled it and the second one they gave me worked.

      • yeh i was until about 9am before i tried again

        • ok, good to know. thanks.

    • Yes! Working again for the first time in nearly three weeks; I was getting the 'update your app' and 'permanent virtual cards soon' errors previously.

Booked advance tickets for Avengers: Endgame because there's no guarantee it'll be still working in a couple of weeks! The virtual card also worked directly for me on the Hoyts website without having to use PayPal.

  • Yup working now. Booked Avengers in 4DX.

  • Mine still doesn't work :(

    • Worked for me yesterday. Now its saying Page not found after charging my card.

      • Same for me, was optimistic after I read it was working yesterday

      • Yes, I am getting the same error message. Have been charged already.. What a shit f**k…

      • did you get your money back ?

      • Same for me. I have contacted them again on Twitter and through the response site mentioned above. This is just silly now…

  • have been getting update app message. Installed latest version today and still get the massage and it now has adds which wouldn't bother me if it actually worked.

  • +1

Tried today and have got the update the app error. Seems like they are using the update the app message to pass the blame to the customer while they are having issues.

Has anyone been able to use the service the past two days?

Edit: also it now has adds…. things are not looking good.

  • I have an new one, ‘page not found” after selecting confirm payment.

    • Yes, same here. It also charges your CC. I tried doing it twice, just to see what would happen and it charged my CC twice! Normally you get your money back if you don't book a ticket so hopefully they do that…I contacted them on twitter and through the issue site above but NOT holding my breath…

      • Can confirm the $1.80 authorisation on my debit card was released after a few hours.

        • Mine too, still can't book a movie but at least the money was returned….

          • @Savitar: I am thinking of giving up of these mofos..

          • @Savitar: should we cancel membership or get a chargeback on credit card?

            • @stockastics: Not sure yet….I am willing to give them a little more but HOPE they don't just fold. No responses to requests for help, basic errors, very much sounds like a company in trouble but I hope its just a technical issue….

  • How do you cancel the membership so it doesn't auto renew? Almost a year since this deal was posted.

  • What is everyone doing? I've been getting the page not found error every day since 11 April and my multiple daily twitter messages are ignored.

    • +2

I'm not convinced there's currently anything you can do to buy tickets with Sinemia. It did seem to work on the 10th but hasn't since then.

I believe they've turned off the ability to buy tickets, I suspect Sinemia have run out of money now a heap of people are getting towards the end of their 12 month plans and there's not enough new people joining to pay for all the tickets.

I'm not sure if they'll turn the ability to buy tickets back on but if they do it will probably be short lived again. I think it's becoming clear that their business is unsustainable and probably broke, I'm wondering how long it will be until they'll finally admit it.

    • +2

Personally I am sending them twitter messages daily, facebook messages and sending them reports on their site. I have not received a single response since posting the latest issue on 29th March. Before that they would respond within 4-8 hours so clearly they are just ignoring issues.

I second what twadds says, I think they are either broke or very close to it so they have just turned off the ability to order. No money for support, no money to purchase tickets so I would imagine they are looking for advertising revenue (which they now have due to ads on their platform) and / or looking for financial backing before continuing.

Remember, Facebook is one of the internets most successful companies, made $6.9Billion in just the 4th quarter without charging ANYTHING. It does it all through ads. Now I get they don't have to fork out for expenses like Sinemia but its proof there is money to be made (LOTS of it) through just ads so I would imagine Sinemia are working out what it needs to do to break even with annual fees, outgoing tickets and then ad revenue…

      • They haven't responded to any of my recent messages on twitter, though you can see in their tweet replies that they respond to other people so I'm not sure how to get off their blacklist.

I have a month left on my annual plan and I've got good value out of it even if I don't get any more tickets so I'm not overly upset, though I do wish I'd bought endgame tickets instead of seeing Shazam.

I doubt the ad revenue they make from the app could ever cover the cost of what they lose on the tickets, possibly the business model could work with other forms of revenue but I doubt Sinemia will stay afloat long enough to find out.

If anyone can still buy tickets I would suggest they do it ASAP.

Though in positive news they only charged my for half my processing fee last time ($1.80 for 2 tickets instead on $3.60) so that's a small win for me.

  • So I jumped on "Trustpilot" yesterday and posted a 1 star review of Sinemia saying they have ignored me and they really need to look after their customers (or words to that effect). Within an hour I got a response from them on trustpilot : Reply from Sinemia - "Hi, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused. We have informed our team and your app error has been fixed accordingly. You may purchase your ticket now. Thanks."

Well I can tell you that response was complete BS. Now interestingly it was failing at the point of selecting the movie before this response then immediately after it got past that but still failed with "Error page not found" when trying to get a virtual credit card.

So it appears they ARE controlling individual accounts by this response but they still aren't able to provide users with VCC's.

I am going to try again in 24 hours to see if I can put a more pointed review with my issue and see what happens….

    • I tried the same thing, they told me my account was fixed but I got the same "Page not found" error.

If anyone is interested in how big the problem is, have a look at he number of replies their support is making on Twitter. https://twitter.com/SinemiaSupport/with_replies

The person posting said they send 16,000 messages out in 48 hours, that's a lot of annoyed customers. I'm not sure how long they plan to go on pretending it's business as usual when they're clearly broke.

      • I have tried there now. I have been messaging @SinemiaApp but will try @SinemiaSupport (did not realise there was two).

Been DM'ing their facebook page and going to try trustpilot again also….

        • They've ignored any message I've sent them on Twitter to either account, which is actually even more disturbing considering how many twitter replies they're sending out. The total number of people complaining must be ridiculously high

Though they have replied to me several times on trust pilot telling me my account has been fixed but always fails after "paying" the processing fee however they're no longer putting a hold on my credit card. I think the app just pretends to run the transaction while an ad plays and then tells you it was successful before giving you an error after you push proceed.

I doubt the ability to buy tickets is ever coming back.

  • None of the virtual credit ccards Sinemia sent me ever worked. Linking to Paypal never worked. Asked for a refund and they said no. Did s credit card chargeback but bank has taken months and are not very helpful. Sinemia are rubbish.

    • Getting paypal to work was tricky but once it was set up it worked perfectly for me. I have seen 14 movies in 10 months with them with the last two months being 0 movies because of the issues. When its up and running it works well if you know how to use it but for right now, it does not work AT ALL…

      • Time to say goodbye..

        • I'd have to agree with this, it was good while it lasted. When I signed up I didn't expect them to last the whole year, though I saw 17 movies for 2 people at expensive cinemas for about $200 after processing fees. So I'm not going to complain too much.

My only regret is buying Shazam tickets instead of Endgame 2 weeks ago on the one day it was working.

          • @twadds: Can you do charge back on credit card now?

            • @stockastics: I could probably get one month worth of fees back but I'm not sure it's worth the effort.

If I had longer to go on my plan I would definitely file a charge back.

  • I can't even cancel my membership. anyone faced similar issue?

  • I have worked out their current approach. They have added ads to the app. Now they have turned off the ability to order tickets BUT they get people to keep trying, hence the ad revenue rises. Work with me here, if the app actually works you would use the app twice in month, therefore only getting say 4 or 6 ads per user but they have to output $40 a month. Now, each user is trying every day to get it to work so they are getting 60 ads per month AND they don't have to fork out any money for tickets.

Then, customers go to trustpilot and provide a terrible review (like I have twice). Once I even said "Fix the issue with "Error page not found"" to which they replied "Your issue is now fixed you can purchase tickets again", so I go through all the adds, give them the $1.80 and yep, it fails with the same issue again….But hey, they got their ad revenue.

Crafty I will give them that. Completely unethical and against anything that actually provides the service customers paid for….Yep, that too….

    • +1

I doubt they are making that much from the ads, it wouldn't come close to covering the cost of tickets.
Might provide them a bit of temporary cash flow for a month or so but people will catch on fast and stop opening the app.

I'm not even sure the ad revenue would cover the cost of hiring people to respond to all the complaints.

It looks like they might be ending subscriptions, though I assume that's code for we're losing a ton of money on our unsustainable business model.
      https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-04-24/moviepass…

Are they actually charging you or putting a hold on your credit card for the $1.80 fee? They used to put a hold on my card that would later drop off though lately it asks me to pick my card and tell me the transaction was successful but my credit card doesn't show and pending transactions. I don't think the app even tries to debit the card as I don't think they have any any intention of letting you buy tickets.

  • Have ended US operations overnight effective immediately.

We can't be too far off.

    • I just heard this….Where is the proof? I can't find anything on line about it..

      • Interesting to note if you look on the drop down menu on the page for which country - US is gone, but everyone else is still there.

Wonder if this is just a tactic re: the class action lawsuit going on, whilst the rest of the world still gets Page Not Found.

        • One article was interesting. It said something like Sinemia was going for a cash grab before shutting down. The started offering unlimited movies for $9.99 a month (something they said they would never do) in the last few weeks while not actually allowing people to purchase tickets. So get ad revenue in, new subscriptions in with no outgoings (apart from a work experience kid copying and pasting the same response in every review on trustpilot) then shut down operations….

It will be interesting to see if they keep the Australia / UK / Canada etc operations going…

          • @Savitar: I suspect it'll be open for new business, using the non-promo rates that no-one in their right mind would sign up for, up until each country has their own lawsuit brought before them and they shut that one down too, whilst all existing customers struggle with the stupid errors.

I'm at the point where I genuinely believe that the page not found errors are not intentional so much as anyone with any dev experience has jumped ship, and there's no-one still there that has the sufficient coding experience to rectify it (or someone's parting gift was to severely (profanity) their code), nor do they have the money to find someone to fix it.

            • @CTJR: I don't for a second believe the "Page not found" issue is a problem the can't fix. They could fix it in a few minutes I am 100% sure. What I can see is code like this :

              If payment_confimed = "Yes" then
call "DisplayVCC.html" <——— This is what use to work
              else
msgbox "Please confirm your payment details"
              end if

So a developer was told to do this :

              If payment_confimed = "Yes" then
call "Ourcustomersaresuckers.html" <——— Not the correct page hence "Page not found"
              else
msgbox "Please confirm your payment details"
              end if

          • @Savitar: no, they wont.

      • Oh well, May will be the 12th months of my annual subscription so for me they've lasted longer than I expected.

  • its all over. Amex wont let me do a chargeback as its past their window..

    • Its only over in the US for now, officially that is….Still no word on Australian operations….

      • I like your enthusiasm bro..

        • Hehehe….I am certainly an optimist…. :)

      • Technically true, though considering they were still selling annual plans in the US the day before they shut down with no mention of refunds you'd have to be pretty crazy to sign up now.

  • Have not been able to book tickets for over a month… iOS app times out and Android app tells me to update even if I'm on the latest version. Their support is not answering my tickets. Oh well, guess I got my money's worth…

    • Read the notes immediately above, Sinemia just closed down in the US overnight….No word on outside of the US (like us) yet….

    • There was never anything wrong with your app version, it was just an error message they made up to do they could block for account while making it seem like a mistake.

If you did manage to contact support, they would have "fixed" your account, meaning it would give you a different error after the processing fee instead.

I always assumed they'd do broke when I bought my yearly plan, though I needed to see 5 movies to end up ahead and I saw 17 so it was actually very good value before it went to crap in the end.

      • Yeah I assumed as much but their support never replies to my emails or tweets. I'm on a yearly plan that expires in July so I've definitely booked enough to make my money's worth, and I would have renewed with them if it isn't for the issues in the last couple of months.

  • Lets celebrate the life of Sinemia. For may of us we got far more value than we spent so I would be interested to know the value your received (this is OZBARGAIN after all).

    I will go :

    • Money spend : ~$100
    • Movies seen : 13 (you can find this on your sinemia account)
    • Price paid per movie : ~$7.6
    • I used to not think about what my time is worth but at some point I started to factor it in with a lot of things I do. I look at your list and I think the money saved, for me, probably wouldn't equate to much value when I consider all the stress and troubles.

Sending an email or a tweet doesn't take long, but usually you're spending a little time thinking about it beforehand and you worry about things later and you're checking for a reply, etc. Even posting on here, talking of troubles, I'd say is part of that. Add all that time up and it's like, How much were you essentially 'paid' for your time?

I saw one movie with Sinemia and then it didn't work again, so I had to go to my bank for a chargeback. Through a mix-up I ended up getting my money back twice (from my bank each time), so I saw a movie for free and I got $50. That sounds real great at first, but when I think of the time spent trying to get Sinemia to work, and then writing to my bank, it doesn't really add up to much of a win, at least to my mind…

At the same time, it was fun, it was an interesting experience, I'm glad to have been part of this whole Sinemia mess, so I'm not saying the whole thing was a meaningless "exercise in stupidity" or something, but I really wonder if you or anyone else actually got any genuine money value out of it when you factor in all the nonsense involved.

    • Money spent: Maybe $20 in transaction fees. Everything else refunded.
      Movies seen: 32

      Did alright out of this.

    • Money spend : $125 ($120 + $5 in transaction fees)
      Movies seen : 18 (1 iMax, 5 In 4DX, 6 Xtream Screen, 5 Village Cinemas ($25 Popcorn + Drink + Ticket deal) + 1 Hoyts Recliner seat
      Price paid per movie : ~$7 + $1.8 Booking fee + $0.15 Transaction fee
