anyone got a good to do list for say a week in HK?
    Ozbargainer style

    • +8

Eat cheap Michelin star yum cha

    • +2

What's ozbargainer style? Eating instant noodles 3 meals a day and only visit places that are free?

    • +6

-Eat cheap amazing food everywhere (or more expensive if that's your thing)
-Walk around Mong Kok/Central/Sheung Wan/Tsim Sha Tsui.
-Visit Happy Valley Racecourse in Sha Tin and also visit the plaza in Sha Tin.
-Check out Victoria Peak and Victoria Harbour
-Go to Macau for 1 or 2 nights (stay at the Conrad in Cotai, it's amazing).
-Visit Ocean Park theme park (if that's your thing).
-Visit Lantau Island and see the Big Buddha.

        • Hong Kong Museum of history is also FREE (or HK$10 for special exhibition) entry for tourists and is a fantastic way to kill a few hours.

      • Victoria Peak - the walking track up there has great views
      • The Buddha - Buy the vegetarian meal and have a look at the museum inside it.
      • From the Buddha take the Gondola back down the hill and pay the extra for the glass bottomed Gondola. If only to make your other half decidedly queasy.
      • Eat out at the restaurants - some ideas of the districts
        https://expatliving.hk/dining-where-to-eat-hong-kong-restaur…
      • Go up the really long interconnected escalators
        http://www.hongkongextras.com/_midlevels_escalators.html

      • Go out on a boat and watch the light show they put on at night using the lights of the city.

      • Go to some of the markets and buy the knock off goods. We pissed ourselves when we saw the Star Wart toys.
        http://hellohongkong.com.hk/the-star-wart-toys/
      • public transport is a good way to get around but we took the shuttle to/from our hotel and the airport.

Personally I found it a bit humid for my liking, but I like to walk around to look at cities - a bit diificult.

      • Thumbs up to all the above suggestions. HK is a vibrant city day or night. Just adding to the above:

Roast Goose and crispy suckling pig - must try
Lan Kwai Fong when the night sets in
        Sneakers street in Mong Kok
Disneyland - if that's your thing
Be adventurous and try Stinky Tofu

      Was there in October. Some solid bargains we had were;
      - to see Victoria's peak without paying the fare: ride the escalators to their top and do a 2km walk to Victorias Peak. Walk back down to street level
      - Many museums are free on Wednesdays
      - The star Ferry is a nice boat ride and is only a couple of dollars
      - Ozone Bar is on floor 118 of the Ritz Carlton. From the outside deck you get wonderful and free views of the HK skyline (so long as you dont buy their drinks… if you want to go happy hour)

      • Walk to Victoria Peak, seriously? The streets in the mid levels are (profanity) steep, I tried that but to be honest I was winging it. Instead, take the mini bus from IFC mall, aud3 or so. Hardly a wait either. Ride to the end.

        • If you ride the mid levels escalators to the top the entire walk to Victoria's peak is mostly flat (and some of it actually down hill). Knocks 2 bird with 1 stone as most people have on their list of things to do 'ride the midlevels' anyway.

        • @canto21: Huh might have to try that next time. I was around near where that zoo was and tried to walk higher but lol the incline around there was not something to be messed with…. can't remember where exactly but it was steep.

  • That is some insane pricing….Lowest ever?

  • Come on Cathay Pacific; give the flying kangaroo a run for their money. We don't want to use snooty and arrogant QF!

    • +1

Yer because CX don't have their own internal staff issues…

      • +2

Look up CX Secrets in FB, it’s a funny read. Felt almost sorry for some of the attendants flying to MEL or SYD.

    • +2

QF directly employ over 30,000 Australians. It is often advantageous to support Australian businesses.

    • +1

Snooty and arrogant?? Never had a problem on QF flights. In fact I like that they keep older FAs on their payroll. CX dumps you once you turn 30

  • +1

Thanks to Virgin for the competition.

The Qantas product on this route is absolutely….crap.

Edit: Virgin appears to have matched ( don’t forget cashrewards)

  • SIgh.

I booked flights to Hong Kong and now the same flights are showing up as $150 cheaper. Is there anything I can do?

    • +4

      Yeah unfortunately not.

I’ve done this before, try doing that with a family of 5, it’s painful stuff. I now never search the same dates I have ever booked flights for once I’ve booked it.

      • If a family of 5 can travel overseas regularly than you're not doing too bad!

        • +2

I wish. First time overseas as a fam. About 20 grand!

Luckily being a virgin gold and booking during the triple points promo, will collect about half a million velocity points after family pooling and get platinum with the misses, which we will use next year to save $7k on flights were are eyeing. Not too shabby I guess.

Play the system it most defiantly works. All about the timing

        • @Gearup:

Wait one trip and you net 1/2 a mil? Really! That’s impressive! You have to be averaging 100k miles person. Care to share your route?

        • @nightelves:

The sweet spot with this deal was booking Premium Economy on the 777. The route was MEL-LAX-JFK. Virgin had the triple points offer and Qantas launched a sale for their new 787 to JFK, Virgin matched, and after cashrewards Triple cashback total was $2700 ea in PE.

5x adults. 1 plat, 1 gold (plat on return legs), 2 silver, 1 red. So a lot of bonus points there.

Adult 1- 20000 (lax return), 40000 (Triple Points bonus), 20000 (plat bonus)
Adult 2-20000 (lax return), 40000 (Triple Points bonus) 17500 (gold/plat bonus)
Adult 3-20000 (lax return), 40000 (Triple Points bonus) 10000 (silver bonus)
Adult 4-20000 (lax return), 40000 (Triple Points bonus) 10000 (silver bonus)
Adult 5-20000 (lax return), 40000 (Triple Points bonus)

          Lax-jfk Delta (w class connection): 50K~

Booked via Amex Velocity Card: 30K bonus.

          Few internal delta flights: 50k

End of Next year we are heading back in Xmas for the snow thanks to all these points, originally going locally. Current fares are about 7/8k so we will blow all the points then save us the cash, accom in snow season is very cheap so won’t cost us too much.

        • @Gearup:

Love your work! But completely irrelevant to a discussion about HK. Now if you nabbed 1 million in economy flights to Hongkers that would be a story.

        • @Gearup:

Hats off to you sir but you could improve on that even more.

          From Mel-Lax
          Family pool setup
          Adult 1 and 4 to Adult 5
          Adult 2 to Adult 3

Return Leg change the family pool to:
          Adult 1 to Adult 4
          Adult 2 and 5 to Adult 3

When you return you would have at least 1 plat, 3 gold and 1 silver earning you even more points. You can be even more creative and credit the SC to Velocity.

        • @nightelves:
Yep have not got that far yet but plat isn’t really that worthwhile I don’t think so more golds would be worthwhile.

        • @Gearup:

It's worth it for the extra points on the leg back.

        • @nightelves: You can pool 2x adults to another adult?

        • @lilkid28:

Oops my mistake only 2 members over 18.

So Adult 1 pairs with Adult 5
          Adult 2 with 3

Return legs you switch things around

        • @nightelves:

Ta will help with planning thanks

  • I've been to HK before, do you think its a good idea to take a train to Shenzhen, stay few nights and back to HK?

    • +1

you need a visa to get into shenzen. Queues are long. Book in advance

    • BTW, if you decide to go there, probably easier to take the ferry to Shenzhen straight from the airport (just follow the sign at the airport…it will direct you to the counter. if you got to the custom, you went the wrong way). it's much faster than MTR and probably cheaper even.

    • Shenzhen is a worthwhile place to visit. There's a 5 day Visa on arrival if you're staying within Shenzhen.

However if you don't speak mandarin it can be challenging as most people there don't speak English. And the great firewall means no google, google maps, gmail, facebook etc so you do need to be well prepared.

      • Get singtel sim for Google access

      • Yes everyone in Shenzen can technically speak Mandarin but Cantonese is far more commonplace. And culturally it's identical to HK.

        • +1

Do a google search for "Shenzhen language". I think you'll be surprised :)

    • Stayed a night in shenzhen a month ago. Has shopping centres and doesn't look like there's much else there. Lots of rich looking people

      • Unlike us battlers.

        • theres no other rich like chinese rich

  • -4

Perth always get left out. Maybe we should be separated from the other part of the country.

These “deals” are so shonky and the advertising so misleading, I don’t know why the ACCC hasn’t investigated the airlines. Try finding direct flights for MEL to HK that are under $1,000 Return. Its so bad. All the airlines do it. I’m going to have to stir this pot with the ACCC and Consumer Affairs.

    • You're being downvoted because you're incorrect, so you're aware. I just got a return ticket for $462 using the AuntBetty code below, it's the airlines selling seats on underfilled planes so you can go cheap if you're less fussy about dates.

  • Wow that makes it $350~ with the AIA Vitality cashback (30%) :D

    • You can use the AIA cashback for better flights.

  • +6

I tried to post a separate deal but Singapore Airport computers are proving problematic.

$432 for above flights via AuntBetty.com.au using code MUMSDAY50.

    Happy Flying.

    Qantas21

    • You're a legend, thanks.

    • Where do you enter the code. Edit. Found it.

    • Milking both QF and Flight Centre in a single transaction!

Even though qantas only says to March 2019, there are bargains for BNE, SYD and MEL for APRIL 2019 School Holidays!!!! Just use flexible date search, and you will find them!. Good luck! . starts around 6-10 april through for about a week going over and return to around end of april as far as I can see.

    • thanks, this is a great tip. managed to sort out school holidays for april 2019.

  • What hotels do you recommend to stay in Hong Kong - Young couple (30Yr - nil kids)

    • Anything on the northern island. At least 4 stars which is like $1200 for 7 nights. South island is pretty boring.
