Gerry Harvey Whinger Tax still a go?

Budget night, everyone's favourite time of the year.

So this: https://www.ato.gov.au/General/New-legislation/In-detail/Ind… has been looming large over our cheap Chinese tat, and gets a mention here: https://www.budget.gov.au/2018-19/content/overview.html (search for GST) along with the news that Customs will be getting $273M for new toys.

What do you think our chances of another 12 months delay are?

  • 0 to none, its not getting delayed again. So if you want to buy anything better get it soon.

Gerry Harvey = biggest con man ever

Still remember the ads for 'free windows 10' when windows 10 was free from Microsoft….

    • +1

      Lol I remember that.

    • I also remember he said that internet shopping would never take off and hence Harvey Norman were (real) late comers to the scene.

      • Harvey Norman were (real) late

Is BigBuys still going? Someone pointed out that the franchise model HN has got in the way of the internet stuff.

Still, Gerry was/is rather clueless; saying himself that you could just send your local store a fax, and if you don't want to pay duty just pick up your cheap tat the next time you're in New York or wherever.

  • I don’t really get how it’s worded… if I buy something from overseas for say $25, I don’t have to pay GST on it, but if I have a business that turns over $75,000+ and I sell items under the current $1000 threshold, I will have to now pay GST on it at the time of import?

Do they really think companies like Zapals, Banggood, Gear Best, etc etc are going to register for GST? Is that what I am reading? It’s all still vague for me. Anyone got an ELi5??

    • etc etc are going to register for GST?

That was my take on it.

I guess they're trying to avoid the British version where everything gets evaluated for VAT and so get the companies to collect the tax for them Fair enough for eBay and Amazon (and probably the dropshippers as well), but every other company in the world?

The 'well ok then we'll add a $5 charge' seems to have come about after someone realised the same.

I think they are expecting Amazon, Book Depository, ASOS and plenty of other mainstream international suppliers will pay it.
They already collect VAT in other jurisdictions in the same way, including in countries where they don't have operations.

I don't know if the Chinese tat shops like the ones you listed participate. It isn't a huge leak from the budget if they don't. Most non-ozbargainers don't have 50c Zapals stuff in the post everyday.

I suppose if it becomes a problem, the ATO will advise they should register or they will get customs to inspect all shipments for compliance, potentially delaying deliveries, and definitely hurting them in the above-$1000 but labelled lower trade.

    • The buying and selling is separate. If you buy $25 of items now from overseas it doesn't have GST on it, however if you're business with $75k+ sales, pretty much most things you sell connected to Australia will have GST in it, payable to ATO on time of activity statement.

The sale is nothing to do with that $1k import threshold.

Hopefully it wont limit my shopping options too much. I will not shop at an overseas store that submits to this blatant rort and I definitely wont be buying anything from Harvey Norman again.

We are one of the most taxed societies in history without a revolution.

Someone has to pay for free healthcare.

      • +1

We already do. It's called the Medicare levy.

        • +1

          Ah. It's not a tax. It's a levy.

    • Source?

      • +1

        Source?

That would be the person who has never looked at rates in Scandinavian countries like Norway, Finland etc and thus proceeded to talk out their rear.

    • I'm okay with taxes but this one is PURELY favours for Gerry. The report clearly indicates the cost to administrate is greater than the expected revenue.

I will never forgive Gerry Harvey for this. Most greedy evil man.

  • I received an Email from Nero for the latest Application & when I checked out the price it had 10% GST on it.
I thought that it didn't start til July 1, so has anybody else come across this.
