Full Disclosure of Commercial Interest on OzBargain from IWTF

I would like to open a conversation around the commercial interests of companies advertising on OzBargain.

In light of my recent travel post outing commercial interest in OTA profiting off the OzBargain community, I propose the website introducing strict guidelines.

I.e Full disclosure on profiting from the community. The information is publicly available by comparing prices when clicking different links and not sensitive to any commercial interest.

I understand a consumer has the power to choose how and where they make purchases however knowledge allows consumers to make informed decisions.

Thoughts?

  • Companies do not pay to post on OzBargain.

All companies are restricted to posting limitations.

Flight search companies like Skyscanner, IWTF, Google Flights etc are the easiest mechanism to dynamically show the cheapest flights. Most often the cheapest flight for one date will be from one travel company and another date from another. Almost always the OTAs will have cheaper flights than booking directly with the airline site.

Where's your recent travel post? I can't see it in your past posts.

This forum post is very confusing without context

I can see product placement in OP username.

        I smell a troll…

Recent IWTF deal was cheaper on some other site (aunty betty or something). OP kicked up a big stink about it

  • I thought this system works.

I don't see what's wrong with this. If IWTF posts a bad deal people will comment and say so, if the deal is good then they have helped the community. Where's the problem?

    don't use this site. thx

Of course they make money somehow, they're a business not a charity!!!

If the deal is good, and you're saving money, what is your problem?
Are all of their deals the absolute cheapest? Probably not. But does anyone ever have the best price all the time? No.

I think you need to get off your high horse.

I think OP is sad that his company never has the best deals and deals from IWTF never point people towards flying with them

OP using this lingo indicates he/she is in the industry. What are OP's commercial interests? Can we have full disclosure from OP?

I am a frequent flyer who works in health with zero commercial interest in any airline/OTA.

I'm a bit confused here. Isn't the purpose of every single business is profiting from customers? IWTF from getting commissions when we buy tickets online, and Qantas gets profit when we fly with Qantas regardless where we buy the tickets right? As long as IWTF offers a good price, then that's all that matters right?

    • Apparently not, it's actually Oz-pay-more-because-this-guy-says-so.
They just chose Ozbargain because it's catchy.

  • +7

oh dear. we spend hundreds of dollars on a plane ticket, waste our hours searching for the ticket and the problem is IWTF getting a $2 cut.

    they should be banned.

I'm not sure why OP is bashing IWTF. His recent post is here. It's like saying we shouldn't support a business selling ANY items higher than the competitors because they're making profit.

In the end we choose whoever can give the best price for any items/services/itinerary that we're looking for.

  • What does the OP think the purpose of a business is other than to make money, and why are Aunt Betty/Flight Centre going to be any different? Strange thread and link above.
