Ctek MXS 5.0 - 5 Amp Battery Charger $95 at Repco

170

Best price I can find at moment. Got myself one today to replace my smaller (.8A) charger. Seems a popular charger here on Ozbargain.

    Any deals on the MXS7?

That's the one you want. Never let me down in +8years I've had it.

    • Why? whats different? is it only the 7a faster/larger charging?

You are right. Main difference is the Amps. Will charge slightly quicker.

After looking into both specs it seems the same except that the 7 adds an extra "stage" in the recondition mode.

At this price point I'll be buying one either way. Great chargers and fantastic build quality. Only thing broken is the red plastic cover on one of the clamps which makes no difference (until I zap myself)

I've been looking at these the past couple of days since my car battery died; I can't see the justification of another $80+ for what seemed like only a 2a increase in charging capacity and no extra features. Can't seem to find documentation on the MXS 7.0 on their website either.

Do you know if either the MSX 5.0 or 7.0 have a memory saver feature? I can't find anything in the manuals about it.

FYI - They supply replacement clamp shells if you can find a supplier that can get them

@Master Bates: The one extra thing that the MXS 7.0 has is the power supply mode.

An example of its use is by having the charger hooked to your car in power supply mode means there is still power supply to your car when you can take the dead battery out in order to install the new battery. So for, typically, modern cars nowadays with various memory settings, those are not lost when the power supply from the car battery is disconnected since the charger has the power supply mode to do the same thing.

So whether that is useful or not depends on each person's requirements. I actually have both the MXS 5.0 and 7.0, and I got the 7.0 because of that feature.

@Gimcrack: Thanks Gimcrack; that's a feature I'm looking for for our other car. I still can't see anything in the manuals to explain how to use the "Power Supply" mode though. Do you simply attach the chargers clamps to the car's battery clamps and then remove the battery?

Edit: Finally managed to google-fu an answer to my question (albeit a 7 year old article).

2nd edit: It seems that something like this memory saver tool might be a cheaper option for the odd battery swap requirement.

@Master Bates: Yeah, it is connect the CTEK charger to the car, turn the charger on and select power supply mode. Then you remove the car battery and install the replacement battery. Afterwards, turn off and disconnect the charger.

A reason I went with the CTEK is because of the fixed CTEK comfort indicator eyelet accessory. I have it permanently connected to the car so that charging or power supply is a simple case of plugging the charger into the comfort indicator and away I go. This way I actually don’t use the alligator clamps that come with the charger.

As you can see, I went with the convenience of the eyelet accessory and it works for lazy me.

  • Great deal. I bought mine from RACQ on their recommendation and paid heaps more

Great deal. I bought mine from RACQ on their recommendation and paid heaps more

That's because the RACQ only exist to extort their members. It's no longer a motoring organisation.

  • These are good.

  • Yeah, that's a good price. And it's a good charger.

Unusual for Repco to be cheapest for something… ha.

  • Damn was in search of one but ended up buying the ctek ct5 start stop charger instead for $110 delivered. Only 3.8amp but auto maintenance mode after charging and also designed for start stop engines. This is by far the best price for the MXS 5.0 though. Ctek are the OEM manufacturer for Mercedes chargers amongst others.

  • I'd prefer to spend $30 extra for a Victron Blue Smart charger eg.
Which will also connect (bluetooth) to a IOS/Android App to let you know what's going on.

  • Apart from the obvious 1a difference, how does it compare to this at SCA? Does the repco model also have the ability to start a fully dead battery?

Thanks OP.. Live North of Melbourne - None In Sunbury or melton so drove to Sunshine, 4 left there now..

    • Glad you got one… I was at my local in Noosaville, with a flat battery out of the boat & the guy infront of me got this. Guy serving him talked it up as a great deal, so I got one ( came home & looked online & realized it was cheap ). Turned out boat battery was faulty, so they actually replaced it under warranty - but I wanted a bigger charger as my little ctek was only .8amp - bought originally for the motorbike.
