4% off BYD Vehicles Purchased Through a Novated Lease @ BYD Australia

1840

Saw this while scouring BYD's site, recently ordered a Sealion 7 through a novated lease so works out well to save another couple of grand.

Note that the car must be ordered and DELIVERED by 30 June 2025 to receive the discount, so would suggest hopping onto it asap if you're interested. Something I couldn't see online is that they have a $1,000 fully refundable deposit, so you can essentially get your name on the list, then get the finances sorted afterwards. Deposit is refundable up until you sign the PO contract when the car is on its way here.

We didn't want you to miss out entirely. That's why we're offering exclusive fleet pricing - available only to eligible Novated Lease buyers purchasing through an approved Fleet Management Organisation (FMO).

For a limited time, you can enjoy a 4% discount across select new BYD models delivered between 1 May and 30 June. It's our way of keeping your journey toward innovation, efficiency, and electric excellence right on track.

Still a couple extra grand shaved off, better value than the usual higher powered charger they throw in.

        • +14

Can't really compare with other brands who discount their overpriced EV by a huge amount because the price was silly to begin with. Take the $16k discount off the Jeep, which has less range and less power than the BYD Atto. After they discounted it now costs about the same, but I still wouldn't buy it.

          • +6

@Make it so: Lemon coloured jeep from Stellantis. I am still laughing about that one :)

How much margin do you think car manufacturers make on mainstream models??

          • @d3al: Toyota net profit margin for the quarter ending December 31, 2024 was 10.67%. · Toyota average net profit margin for 2023 was 8.44%, a 6.16% increase from 2022.

            • +7

@Gdsamp: my point exactly. "only" 4% off is quite decent for a car like this.

            • +2

@jv: That's coz it's a Honda and not many people want them.

Honda and not many people want them.

They did then, before they changed the way they pay the dealers.

            • @jv: What year /model did you buy?

            • @jv: Like this? @jv

            • @jv: I got 12% off a Golf R when fhey were selling like crazy when fhe GTI won car of the year.

Same glowing reviews for Tesla too
        https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/tesla

        • +8

if you actually look at the reviews most of just people complaining about Tesla delivery and waiting too long and people too stupid to operate the tesla app.. if you look at BYD on the other hand its the actually cars that are the issue and the warranty requests, and not giving any refund or honoring there terms of purchase. The difference alot more people want to return a BYD over a tesla.
Also if you look at some of the reviews they aren't even about there cars they are on powerstations for houses.

          • +5

@kungfuman: From reading the reviews, especially of the dealer nearest to me, it sounds like they can't cope with the load. People are avoiding Tesla's, and realise that BYD is a great alternative. They now got completely flooded, and wait times have gone from days/weeks to many months. Hopefully they can adjust to cope. Looking at how their sales increased massively across the globe, it's hardly a surprise.

            • -2

@Make it so: not sure what state that's in but I know on the gold coast most byd places are deserted. was at a tesla service over the weekend it was packed. with people. So don't know maybe its the location that is the problem.

            • +7

@Make it so: many of the reviews seems complaining about after sales service, and i believe this will be the same cases with many other Chinese EVs in the coming year or 2

from my understanding, BYD is trying to expand both the showrooms and service centers but the number of sales still put pressure to the loads
it will takes time for BYD and other chinese companies (eg. Geely) to improve their service centers footprint

              • @littlesoldier: Tesla had problems with ramping up it's service centers and spares availability in Australia as well, but they managed to get on top of it.

BYD has about 18 months to get it right before they burn through all their goodwill. If they don't recognise it as an existential threat they will have to have a series of emergency rebrands like Great Wall Motors (Now trades as Ora and Wey).

        Ford https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/ford-dealers

        • +3

Mate thank you for that the way people talk is like the japanese and US brands are the kings/gods of car makers they are all rubish as well.

          • +2

@MDSUXKS: Our current cars are Japanese. We've had issues. It's why I have no issue getting a Chinese EV.

          • +1

@MDSUXKS: US brands are absolutely not that great compared to Chinese brands.

            • +1

@FujinShu: I know I just learnt that semi in us don't have even air-bags. Also learnt that why us cars, and beside been huge, we don't sell in Japan because they need a bunch of conversions to meet safety standards they are rubbish compare to the new tech a company like BYD have 24h 3x8hr Rd teams work on improving the quality of their brandd.

        • yeah there is a general tendency to complain when writing a review than thinking about it objectively or considering various factors

      • +5

I suppose the difference is I didnt leave a positive review (complaint?) because I've only had positive dealings.
Delivery was good and thorough, car was in mint condition, only warranty issue I've had was on a plastic side mirror surround and was sorted without any complaints or pushback or cost from BYD. The negatives are always the loudest, and its plenty often peoples expectations not being based in reality.

      • +5

People don't write positive reviews, but they sure are keen to write negative ones.

Happy people stay quiet. Upset people complain to everyone they can.

      • +8

40,000 cars sold in Australia and 80 reviews, most of which are just about after sales support (not the car itself). The problem with product review is no one tends to write "I bought a thing and it worked fine". Once you take out the people complaining about how their tyre blew and it's not their fault, or BYD didn't help them install a charger, there's only a few concerning ones.

Dealers being shoddy isn't new either, you'll find that with any car. Kia, Mazda, etc are all the same. It sucks getting them to do anything once they have your money.

      • +2

        A one star review.

Don’t use the Angle auto finance that BYD suggested. It’s a fraud company with ridiculous high early pay-out fees.

I'm not defending BYD but that's one stupid way to write 1 star review.

      • Product Review is where people get to complain. Check what JB and OW stars on there.

      • Thanks for the reminder - I've got another negative review to add to the list due to their pathetic after sales support.

      • +1

        5 star for me.

    • Long time haven't heard of "I'm $2 close to my Tesla".

I warned people here before that they were paying more for US/German cars, but they didn't listen… :)

  • +7

I was advised few weeks ago that there is currently a6 to 8 week allocation waiting time. Then delivery time on top of that.

I think it will be highly unlikely that anyone who orders now will be able to get this benefit.

But great for this waiting already!

    • better double check!!
current order could be under your own name
the above only valid if it's ordered through "valid Novated Lease Provider or Fleet Management Organisation (FMO)."

dont think changing the order by from yourself to different name is allowed

      • RIP gg

      • +1

I was advised by the BYD rep that I could order in store, send the order number to the leasing company, and then they'll sort out the rest.

Also asked about applying this offer and they said all good so long as the leasing company has been notified by me.

        • +1

I ordered what I wanted personally, paid the deposit, then the leasing company arranged and paid the finance and refunded the deposit once it was settled.

          • +2

@Rogue01: For me, they said if I'm doing a novated lease they don't need a deposit.

I just contacted them, and they instructed me to ask my novated leasing provider to send them a purchase order, after which they will apply the discount. I originally ordered the car late March.

      • -1

My NL company told me I have to order the car myself and it gets transferred over to them.

        • BYD told me my NL provider has to send them a purchase order.

    • I asked today and they said both Shark or SL6P about 10 days if I dont want extras fitted before delivery. They also mentioned small quantities of stock of most models were currently held locally and are available within 1 week due to buyers finance deals falling through. This was Sunny Coast QLD

Still no decent cheap 7 seater electric vehicle with good range available

    • +4

Unlikely to be for quite a while. Proper 7 seater is going to be a large vehicle which hinders aerodynamics and increases weight so efficiency will suffer. Efficiency aside, range can be compensated for with a bigger battery, but that will add more weight and significantly increase cost.

Basically, current EV technology doesn't really support that brief.

That being said, the overwhelming number of '7 seaters' on the market are an absolute joke whatever they're powered by. Really the only answer is Kia Carnival.

      • +3

EV9 ticks all of my boxes… except for FBT exemption. I’m assuming that even if they dump LCT (which is a stretch) then the FBT cap will just continue to exist as its own similar rule.

I guess the only solution is to wait for more models to come out.

        • +1

Good car if it works for you.

Personally I wouldn't classify it as cheap, and the 3rd row is too small to deserve the name by my standards. But that's the thing, everyone has different needs. At that price point you've also got the ID Buzz now. But in both cases I'd take the Carnival at half the price (not electric though).

      • +2

what? you know the GLB 7 seater is a smaller car than the GLC? there's plenty of 7 seater EV options eg. Tesla model Y (UK/US) and certain BYD models likely to come to AU soon. Xpeng X9 MPV has been confirmed for late 25/early 26

        • +1

Just because it's advertised as 7 seats, doesn't mean you can fit a human being in them. That's kind of my point, there's incredibly few 7 seaters that are worth the name, basically all of which are people movers.

Out of the ones you list, the GLB is not currently available as an EV and the 3rd row is pretty tight unless you compromise the 2nd. The Tesla Y is too tight in the 3rd row as well and also not currently available in Australia. The Xpeng X9 could be good, but again not available yet and pricing unknown.

          • +2

            @SanguinarySeraph:

Out of the ones you list, the GLB is not currently available as an EV

uh it's called the EQB, it's exactly the same as a GLB but in EV drivetrain

            That's kind of my point

is it now? I don't see how the use case of the rear 2 out of 7 seats is relevant to the discussion. you said 'the current EV tech doesn't support that brief (7 seater EVs),' whatever this means, I don't really know what your point is to be honest

        • +1

there zeekr 009 as well.. $150K though.
Xpeng X9 looks like might be just under $100K though.

          • @superm86: fingers crossed, X9 looks the goods

          • @superm86: I checked one out at the shopping centre recently. I was quite shocked that the whole front seems to be plastic. Like a large, vertical wall of plastic begging to be get damaged. Imagine driving it at high speed for long distance - within a few years, the surface will be completely pitted from the rocks hitting it. I would consider it entirely unsuitable for anything other than urban roads.

      • Lucid Gravity is one. Doubt we ever see them in Australia though.

    • Yeah it's ridiculous, ldv has the mifa 9 ev and Merc has an ev van. Both costing 6 figures.

    • There is a rumour a stretched Model Y with 6 real adult seats is starting production in China, possibly just for the China market but there is hope.

    • +1

      Have you considered a bus

    • I'm wandering with the decline on population birth how many people will need a 7 seater to I had one for 4 years guess how many time I used it is never haha expecting people form overseas to come and bla bla bla never used this is a niche market we need even cheaper EVs and big batteries plugging hybrids since e people are too scared of charging cars at the comfort of their home and the government is taking forever to install/subsidise more public charges.

  • +1

It's a decent discount. But does it apply to existing orders? I have had an order in for 6 weeks with an expected delivery of June. Several BYD models have a waiting period of 3-6 months, making it kind of pointless to put this out there now.

    • does it apply to existing orders?

Yes, chat to your NL company and they'll talk to BYD and apply it.

Several BYD models have a waiting period of 3-6 months, making it kind of pointless to put this out there now.

Agree, we just put an order in a week or so ago and was told by end of FY there'll be the new shipment. So hopefully we can scrape in for this, but still good to note for people like yourself with exisiting orders from a bit earlier on.

      • Thanks, I phoned BYD before I saw your response. The sales person associated with my order will phone me later. I'll see what she says before phoning my lease provider. It says this is for orders made through your lease provider, but they had told me I could order directly with BYD and give them the order number because they can't get discount with BYD anyway. But the end result should be the same.

        • +1

Yeah I also ordered at BYD and they said just send the order number to the leasing company and they'll sort out the rest.

Also SMS'd the seller I ordered from and they mentioned to go to the leasing company to deal with it/will still be eligible if delivered on time, but still good to flag it directly with BYD nonetheless.

          • @mangobango: So they can't arrange a NL?
When I spoke with Chery, the guy said the in house NL team can usually beat the price of a customer's one.
I'm not sure how much sales bs is present.

            • @bargainperson: Many employers will only deal with certain lease providers. Mine permits 2, so that there is competition.

            • @bargainperson: It really depends as Make it so mentioned.

I read that Maxxia has pretty crap interest rates (11-12%), but the mob my company is with mentioned "7-9%".

Depends if your company wants to go through the hassle of going through another company on your end, but also bear in mind some leasing companies allow you to choose your own external financier so best to hit them up and see.

              • @mangobango: Sales guy told me your company isn't allowed to prevent you using another provider.
But yeah, mine is meant to be Fleet Partners and I think it's around 8% too, so not the worst.

                • +1

@bargainperson: Interesting to know, guess it depends how much you want to annoy your payroll team then!

                • +1

@bargainperson: Employers are not obliged to allow novated lease arrangements, so I don't see why they couldn't disallow a certain provider. I know my employer supports two companies, and I'm fairly sure you couldn't use any other.

              • @mangobango: For our family car, Maxxia was 10% 7 years ago and it went up to 12% 2 years ago when we renewed. We got a quote this week for around 10.50% and Maxxia claimed that's the best they could offer. Can't believe others are offering as low as 6.6%!

      • hopefully we can scrape in for this

        ADABYDNLHS

  • +12

Having a requirement that is out of your control, like delivery, is so unreasonable.

    • +1

Yeah it's annoying, I was assured when I ordered that it'd be here before the end of FY so fingers crossed.

Regardless this deal shouldn't really be a deciding factor imo, more of a "if you're already set on getting a BYD/have an order in then let the leasing company know and fingers crossed you get it in time" thing.

Especially that it's kinda hidden in their small "events and offers" link, just thought it'd be a good FYI.

    • If anything that's an absolute deal breaker to me. You've done all you can as a customer, but if they drag their feet you can't do squat.

Not the first time they've had these conditions in their deals either.

  • +1

I hate that novated leases are not possible for sole traders.

    • +1

I'm sure there are plenty of other tax benefits available to you.

      • +1

There are not. I have to be a sole trader due to professional rules, and it's the worst possible tax arrangement.

        • +1

Fair enough. I seemingly wrongly thought it was easy to claim all sorts of things.

    • +2

Can't you buy the car under the business name with an instant asset write-off? That would be an even better option as there's no NV fees.

      • Nope:

        1. The limit is $20k now.

        2. The asset has to be used for generating your income, which a personal vehicle is not (despite every tradie in Australia doing this).

        3. There are specific rules limiting the availability of this regime for passenger vehicles.

Whereas a novated lease starts from the premise that it's a personal vehicle.

  • They need to bring back FBT benefits for PHEV, damn Greens

    • +6

Need to? or you just want them to? because those are very different things.

      • +3

        Me want.

    • -2

Good thing they've been kicked out of the house.

      • There are even more of them in the senate now, and there aren't enough independents/others to go around them. They actually have more power than they did before.

We can only hope they learned to be less obstructive.

    • +5

Disagree. They're already popular so don't need a subsidy. Get an EV if you want the tax break and zero tailpipe emissions.

      • -1

My Phev is zero tailpipe emissions.
        So far 100% EV.

They are popular because of the tax benefits, demand will fall from here, the price difference to upgrade to PHEV doesn't stack up at all without FBT exclusion.

        • +2

My Phev is zero tailpipe emissions. So far 100% EV.

But if that was always going to be the case, why wouldn't you just buy an EV?
