  • Selphy really? Canon trying to be cool

    • +3

I think that’s a coincidence, these have been around for years.

  • Thanks OP! I have the selphy cp1200, can anyone think of a reason to upgrade to this one?

    • +1

The spec is exactly the same comparing the spec sheet, except for the bigger screen(Mopira support can be added via firmware update).

I bought the CP1300 only because the CP1200 broke out of warranty. So yea unless it broke or you want the bigger screen, there really isn't any reason lol (print quality is exactly the same).

      Cheers.

      • Thanks for that, I was thinking to sell mine and get an upgrade because this is a good price on the device

  • Anyone have one of these that can give more insight on how well these work and portability?
Been thinking of getting one of these for my overseas trips especially to remote places where I can gift the prints away to some of the people I meet/photograph. Don't care too much for home use as have the big DNP RX1 and Epson Inkjets for everything else.

    • +1

Plus: photo quality, and "bigger" size photos.

      • The quality is pretty much the best for the "portable" category (underlying technology being dye sublimation/thermal transfer)
      • The photo size is the "bigger" postcard size vs other options in the same category (e.g. the Polaroid options, ZInk options, and the Kodak mini).

Considerations/cautions: printing speed, and while portable but not on-the-road level of portable.

      • The printing speed is not as quick compared to the Polaroid or ZInk options. Each one may take ~a minute (including the time that you send the photo to the printer over wifi/other connection). And as the photo needs to go back-and-forth four times for the different dye 'layers'.
      • The printer requires external power source (there is an optional battery, but bulky and extra cost, and not sure how many prints it can do before going flat). While the size is small enough to pack into luggage cases, and maybe from house to house, but not exactly portable enough to do it on-the-road. Due to how it prints, a stable surface is more-than-much preferred, if not essential (e.g. a desk). My analogy of this would be that, this printer is a NUC computer, while smaller than the bigger desktop towers, but not exactly portability usable like a laptop.

Personally I am quite happy with mine, as I don't really mind the speed and whenever I use it, it'll be a stationary scenario. It is sufficiently convenient for me as the printing quality is more the priority for me.

Good luck and have good trips!

      • In your experience, if it’s only used in a stationary setting does it offer any advantages over just using an at home inkjet to print 4x6s?

        • I don't have any experience with photo printing at home other than using 4-pass dye sub/thermal transfer printer, so I can only speculate the comparison with inkjets.

The main advantage really is the convenience and space savings VS the bigger inkjets. It is small enough to be considered as compact to store away, and pull out of cupboard to print when needed, and then out of sight (or even if to keep it on the desk, it still doesn't take up much space).

I'd say with the bigger inkjets, especially if they are the higher end and more photo printing focused ones, you'll have higher versatility with choosing different (and better) photo papers, higher DPI and better colour control which will lead to higher photo quality, and larger prints if eventually you are into framing, handcrafts decorating and gifting. Of course they'll also come with higher costs.

I think youtube should have some videos of people sharing their experience too, which can be helpful as well.

          Happy shopping =)
