So it's From $1980 London & $2062 New York - as that's the minimum you will pay to get these prices as you need to buy 2.

Be warned, I recently went on a Cathay A350 in economy. Big mistake. They have opted for a 9 across seat configuration, which is just too many seats for the width of an A350. The seats and the aisles are extremely narrow, and the plane is not comfortable. If travelling economy, I'd much rather pay a little more and use an airline that has A380s for long haul. Airline is great, but the person who designed the economy cabin on the Cathay A350 is either a midget, sadist or accountant.

      Or all three.

    • I upvoted the above, and lived experience is more important than paper figures, but I'm curious about @Burnertoasty's experience because Cathay's A350s are 32/18 (pitch/width) according to SeatGuru:

      https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Cathay_Pacific_Airways/Cat…

That's better than both Qantas' 787-9 dreamliner (which I found too narrow - 32/17.2) and Qantas' A380s (31/17.5).

I guess the message is pitch and width do not fully describe the in-flight experience.

      • Both the A380 and the Dreamliner are much more comfortable than the A350 Cathay config, the aisles are extremely narrow, you cannot move past a drinks trolley for example, and you bump everyone as you walk down the aisle. Those seats must be hell when you are trying to sleep. I was really looking forward to going on the A350 after a great flight on a Jetstar 787, but i was astounded at how bad it was.

For A380 it makes sense. But it makes no sense for Dreamliner (Boeing 787) as the width of the plane is narrower than A350. If both planes seats 9 Economy seats across then 787 experience would be much worse than A350.

Also CX does not have A380 or B787 either so I really don't know who you are comparing to.

        • Agree with edisonAU. The Dreamliner is a narrower plane than the a350, & is also always configured 3-3-3. There's no way the a350's economy seats are narrower that either the 787 or the 777 (when configured 3-4-3). There's more to a flight's comfort than just the seat's width & pitch, but generally the a350 seems to be well reviewed. Higher cabin pressure (like the Dreamliner), quieter than older aircraft, & a spacious cabin. I'm hoping to try it in October, not a fan of the Dreamliner's narrow seats or lack of sun shades.

I'm curious if Cathay has moved to the 3-4-3 configuration on the 777 yet? I know it's supposed to happen, but when I flew with them in early April it was still 3-3-3. I won't fly a 777 in 3-4-3 configuration, which means no 777 on Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, amongst others.

@ddarroch: Dreamliner 787 on JAL is 2x4x2 and omg it was comfortable even in economy. Plenty of leg room. Was sitting on the side so it was a 2 configuration.

Service was impeccable on the direct flight from Melb to Tokyo. Even better than Qantas.

Never had a meal on board after serving when you were asleep..Once you wake and they see you on their patrolling rounds they will ask you if you want your missed meal now….

Never had this type of service in economy or business in Qantas, Singapore Airlines or Cathay Pacific.

Cathay pacific seats are also incredibly uncomfortable it's like sitting on a board instead of foam cushions.

        • @lplau: only JAL 787s have 8 Economy across. Just about everyone else, including Qantas, have 9 Economy seats across.

    • How big are you?

      • Depends which leg are you referring to.

    • Cathay A350s are 3-4-3 in economy which is why they're worse than a 3-3-3 787

  • Interesting that a thousand buck peak season return to London with what has traditionally been a top tier carrier has been received lukewarm by Ozbers. Five years ago you would have been knocked down in the rush. Just goes to show the inroads that the Chinese carriers are making in the market .. :-) .. !!
