    In before:

if only this were a Pro console and $50 cheaper, it would be a good deal!

  • +8

Not even a pro, seems like a rip.

  • +5

    Not Pro no deal

  • +3

The Pro has been around $450 ish, would rather a console with double the power than a few extra games

    • -5

It’s not all about length. It’s how you use it.

      • Yeah and i use it on my 4k samsung tv which doubles the frame rate and runs older games alot better like assassins creed series etc.. so i do use it well 😎

What are you on about? I was talking about sex

  • I get people who already own a PS4 and don't want to upgrade, but it baffles me that so many people still settle for the base PS4 today :/. It baffles me even more how many people settle for the base PS4 with a 1TB HD. It makes no sense, at that point there's only a $50 difference in price! At BigW, it's $479 for the 1TB base PS4 vs $529 for the PS4 Pro, which is a much better console which includes a 1TB HD anyway. A base PS4 with 500GB HD costs $399 which is a bigger difference, but I would still argue you're better off spending the extra $130 and getting a console with more than twice the GPU power, 30% faster CPU, an extra GB of ram, twice the hard drive space, better networking etc.

To look at it another way, if you're already willing to spend $399, an extra $130 might sound like a lot, but it really isn't, if you spread that cost over a 2 year period, that literally works out to 18 cents per day, or you could look at it as $5 extra per month. It's a matter of perspective. This is also why I chose to upgrade to the Pro when it came out, at the time I knew there would be at least another 3 years left of this console generation and I could sell my PS4 for around $300, which meant the upgrade would cost around $250. Over a 3 year period that's only $7 per month which is pretty easy to justify given how much entertainment I get out of it.

Long story short, I just can't recommend this deal, at the point where you're spending $499 on a deal like this, I would say just spend the extra $30, buy a Pro without games and then buy the game you actually wanted (or wait for a better deal, which is what I'd recommend if you're not in a hurry).

  • A base PS4 with 500GB HD costs $399 which is a bigger difference, but I would still argue you're better off spending the extra $130 and getting a console with more than twice the GPU power, 30% faster CPU, an extra GB of ram, twice the hard drive space, better networking etc.

Both PS4 consoles have the same networking.

You say just $130 as if it has the exact same value to every person in the world, where as in reality that may very well be a defining factor between a purchase or not.

Not everyone needs the Pro variant, especially people that are buying it for a young child/kid as a gift and just need a base console to get them playing video games.

    • Around the networking you're 100% correct, just double-checked that. I was under the impression the slim still used the original networking chip.

I'm not judging people without money and I'm also not talking about a parent buying it for a young kid, I'm talking about an average adult or working teenager who can make logical decisions for themselves. The Slim is an absolute rip-off, no matter how you look at it. As I've already mentioned, once you factor in the hard drive upgrade, they basically charge a $50 difference between the Slim and Pro versions of the two consoles and there is a huge step between them from a hardware standpoint.

No one 'needs' a PS4 Pro, but everyone can benefit from one. This argument about it being only for 4k TV owners doesn't really make sense, obviously a system with 2.3x the GPU power will give you benefits, all the other little upgrades help as well. In PC terms, people are happy paying twice as much for a graphics card that barely offers an extra 40% of performance, how does spending an extra $50 not make sense when you're more than doubling your GPU performance and getting a CPU upgrade in the process?

As I said, if you're willing to spend $400, you shouldn't have a problem spending $530, you may have to wait an extra couple of weeks, but it's clearly within reach. If you're really not able to justify the extra $130, you should probably be asking yourself if you should be buying a new console or getting one second-hand.

The point I am trying to make is that buying the Slim at retail price doesn't make sense. Buying a second hand base-PS4 if you don't have the money for a Pro makes perfect sense as you can pick them up for less than $250 (in fact, just checked Gumtree, here's one for $200 which appears to include 3 games: https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/burwood/playstation/ps4-in-9…).

      • I'm talking about an average adult or working teenager who can make logical decisions for themselves.

You're speaking quite generally yet say you're only referring to a certain group of people, which one is it?

The Slim is an absolute rip-off

I highly disagree, it's the most popular console, with over 70 million consoles sold worldwide.

As I've already mentioned, once you factor in the hard drive upgrade, they basically charge a $50 difference between the Slim and Pro versions

You're again assuming everyone needs 1TB of game storage, I recently installed a ~250GB SSD into my Pro console and haven't even filled 50% of it yet.

The point I am trying to make is that buying the Slim at retail price doesn't make sense.

To you perhaps, but it makes sense to a lot of other people.

        • You're speaking quite generally yet say you're only referring to a certain group of people, which one is it?

No I'm not, go right back to the first sentence of my first post. "I get people who already own a PS4 and don't want to upgrade, but it baffles me that…", okay, how about sentence number two, "It baffles me even more…"

I was clearly stating my opinion and then explained how I look at it. YOU are the one who keeps saying that I'm supposedly speaking for everyone. I've also already explained the kinds of people I believe would probably share my opinion, and given that you've already quoted the answer to your own question, I'm not really sure what more you're looking for.

Clearly you are just trying to find a reason to argue.

I highly disagree, it's the most popular console, with over 70 million consoles sold worldwide.

You are free to disagree, like I said, I stated my opinion and you are free to your own.

Having said that, your arguments don't even make sense. The number you're quoting is the total number of PS4 sales which includes the original PS4, the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro.

The PS4 Slim has never been the most popular console and you're going to have to present some pretty compelling evidence to persuade me otherwise given that Sony have clearly stated that the Pro is selling better than the Slim, which is really not that surprising given the pricing structure (which is my whole point):
          https://www.vg247.com/2017/02/03/ps4-pro-sales-are-stronger-…

You're again assuming everyone needs 1TB of game storage

Again, I'm not, what I'm saying is that Sony is charging $50 more for the hardware upgrades excluding the hard drive. Which makes the Slim an expensive console. YOU are the one saying that I'm saying everyone wants a 1TB HD when I never even said that.

If someone was eating a banana at work and they told me that my lunch @ $12 was expensive and they only paid $8 for theirs. Sure, their lunch is cheaper than mine and maybe they don't want to spend the extra $4. But the fact is, it's still a really f* expensive banana. That's how I feel about the Slim, yes, it's cheaper, but for the hardware you're getting, it's expensive.

You can disagree as much as you want, but here's the 500GB XBOX ONE S for $288:
          https://www.ebgames.com.au/xbox-one-801774-Xbox-One-S-500GB-…

And sure, the PS4 Slim is more capable, but it's not $100+ more capable from a hardware standpoint, just as the Pro upgrade isn't just worth $50. Clearly Sony are overcharging for the Slim, I think it should be retailing in the early 300s, closer to $329 or so.

That's my point, you don't have to agree with it. But you also shouldn't be putting words in my mouth either and tell me I'm saying things I haven't said. Which reminds me, before you go putting even more words in my mouth as I can already see this coming next, no, I'm not suggesting people buy an XBOX ONE S over a PS4…

        • @raziel2001au:

I was clearly stating my opinion and then explained how I look at it. YOU are the one who keeps saying that I'm supposedly speaking for everyone. Great, I was doing exactly the same, except I'm not the one here throwing my arms around in disbelief that other people would do anything other than what you think is appropriate.

Having said that, your arguments don't even make sense. The number you're quoting is the total number of PS4 sales which includes the original PS4, the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro.

My argument is that whether you like to accept it or not, the base PS4 in general is the most popular console, so clearly Sony must be doing something right - against your best wishes of course!

Which makes the Slim an expensive console….

..to you, these are all your individual findings, so please stop speaking like everything you're saying is the word of a messiah.

I'm sorry you feel that way, and I would say the exact same to you, but I don't feel that's necessary.

        • Sony must be doing something right - against your best wishes of course!

What are you talking about? I love the PS4 platform, so not sure why you're saying it's against my best wishes like I somehow don't like the PS4. I'm a huge PlayStation fan and this is yet again an example of you putting words in my mouth.

the base PS4 in general is the most popular console

Because it's based on 3 years of sales where there was no PS4 Pro along with a number of people still buying the Slim consoles. The thing is, if you go back and read what I actually wrote, I wasn't ever talking about the historical PS4 sales: "it baffles me that so many people still settle for the base PS4 today"

Today, as in, a year after the release of the Pro. And today, base PS4 sales are less than the Pro sales, as Sony has already confirmed when they said the Pro is selling better than the Slim. They no longer produce the original PS4, and therefore the base PS4 is in fact not the most popular console to buy today.

It is only the most popular when you factor in all of the historical sales, which is not what I'm talking about.

these are all your individual findings, so please stop speaking like everything you're saying is the word of a messiah.

I never said these weren't my individual findings. Again, stop putting words in my mouth. I also don't see why you feel it is necessary to insult me.

Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion, they don't have to align with your way of thinking. You don't think the PS4 Slim is expensive at $399, I do, that's my opinion and I'm allowed to have it, just as you are allowed to have your opinion. Stop trying to force me to agree with your point of view as I don't. We're two different people so we should be able to have differing opinions.

There is no right answer here so I don't see why you feel the need to keep arguing that the Slim is not expensive and a good deal for people. In my opinion, it is expensive and you're better off buying the Pro, that's my opinion and it's not going to change no matter how much you want me to see things your way.

  • this deal is bad …

july sales should see a good $50 drop or more..there should be a price drop soon on the pro models anyhow …

there should be a price drop for the Days of Play sale which starts june 8
