Xiaomi 8 will come at the end of this month…wait that or buy this :)

    • +2

8 should be a smaller form factor and more designed to be stylish. MIX phones are typically their power houses, with larger screen and battery.

      • Good points. I actually have both xiaomi 6 and mix 2 but am not willing to buy both this year…:)

  • At this rate, soon Xiaomi will be selling phones for $1000+

    • If they do it'd better be amazing :)

This loosely compares to something like the S9+ (s9+ still better cam and screen to be fair, but I don't like samsung/touchwiz) but that's still ~$300 more.

      • Very loosely ….

        • Same cpu/gpu, more ram, bigger battery, same android OS version, etc etc. As I said the galaxy cam will be better (dxo likes this phone a lot tho) and galaxy screens are always top notch.

Depends on how much those things mean to you and how much you want to spend.

        • @mattman: Yea, stereo speakers, water proof, more securely storing your data (i.e not un-encrypted data to random china servers), samsung experience is more lean than miui, better screen, better camera, headphone jack, significantly better battery life. Very loosely haha ;-)

You can clearly see where the $300 goes!

        • @OnlinePred:

Use Google services which are all pre installed on global xiaomi like this. Yes you would be silly to use miui cloud stuff.

Software subjective and largely nullified by Nova or similar (I have no love for the miui launcher, but the rest is really much the same).

Rest I am happy to deal with for the price, and happy not to have another Samsung.

        • @mattman: Going from Mi6 to S9 was pure bliss btw. Given you can get Android One AOSP running on S9 too, it's going to be amazing once that's fully stable.

The one thing with both phones, although Xiaomi more so, is that you can never get a full google experience. This is where AOSP fixes things.

I'm I'm spending $700 on a Chinese import with limited warranty, I would be much happier spending a little more to get a better phone and warranty and not run the risk of any malware installed from stock.

        • @OnlinePred:

Mi2s is a beta p phone as well. If they get that going long term, this would be an awesome phone.

        • @sabaramo: Yea it's fantastic to see the large amount of devices on the beta channel, really exciting!!!

I would be buying the OP6 over the MI2s though. OP6 also has beta.

    • That's what their Mi line is for. The budget or mid-range phones are the Redmi range.

      • Mi Max, Mi 6x range are mid range phones.

        • Redmi are their entry level phones then. They're a step down from anything Mi. I haven't checked, but I doubt you would find Mediatek chips in any Mi phones.

  • This or an S9 from Jb Hifi deal?

    • Which S9 JB deal do you speak of?

  • Darn it just bought one from them for $750

I feel like something about android phones is really lacking these days. Like they are trying so hard to best Apple and missing the opportunity to invest in themselves.

    • +6

You realise that Xiaomi was the first major phone manufacturer to bring in attempts at a bezel-less design, and Apple one of the last, yes?

Apple has actually been grafting from everyone else on the design front of late. The only novel thing they've spat out in 4 or 5 years has been the IR array on the front camera, and that's still been watered down into FaceID and animoji, when they could have stuck it on the back and turned it into an AR-friendly sensor array.

Might be high time to back up your feelings with some investment in yourself via a little further reading.

      • I'm talking about the simple and effortless measures Apple takes that just work, are clean and simple and have been forever. I'm not saying they are ahead of the game on all fronts, but they set a standard and Android keeps pushing harder at meeting that rather than doing there own thing. Settle down, I have owned an android phone for many years. At the end of the day, does it really matter who did what first? It's who did what right and consistently and managed to sell it and build a platform and if that means improving on existing ideas, then so be it. Welcome to capitalism. Because if your another one of them Samsung fanboys running around saying Samsung makes the screens for iPhones, then congratulations, I hope your day is fullfilled with that knowledge.

        • +1

Apple work fine if you are happy doing things the way they have prescribed. Very hard to do things differently.

Android is built to do things whichever way you like but can also end up a bit cluttered and disjointed if you don't take care.

It's reallg just a horses for courses thing. If you want a phone that just works and you just browse, take pics, make calls etc iPhone is just fine and will do all those things well.

Android is much better equipped at taking over some desktop and more advanced tasks. Also just more options in price/style etc for those who can't afford a flagship or want to look the same as everyone else.

        • @mattman: edit: sorry, wrong post

        • +1

That's a pretty over-simplified viewpoint of it, particularly if you've noticed all the changes to iOS over the last 5 years, namely how it has started to clone a lot of Android features.

Android is built to work across numerous hardware and design platforms, while the current iOS is built to run on 8-10 chipsets with about 6 (barely) different design forms. What you're complaining about and championing are endemic aspects of each approach.

Both ecosystems handle basic and slightly advanced tasks about as well as each other without any learning curve or 3rd party app, simply that each individual Android-based manufacturer has their own spin on software packages.

All I'm reading is another individual fumbling around the concept that the current phone form factor has reached it's zenith. All they can do now is attempt to pack more battery life and processing power in until they can figure out flexible screen technology, or move to AR formats (think Google Glass, but less obnoxious), or something entirely new.

The iPhone X follow-up is going to feel just as stale to you, I assure you.

  • Is there any Xiaomi phone with the screen size at around 5 inches with decent camera(s)? Sorry for my ignorance. I have been looking at different websites but still unable to tell which is good.

    • I recall the old Redmi 4/4x variants have 5inch screen but they are not powerful enough.
I guess the Mi5/Mi5s could be your best pick, they have 5.2 inch screen which I find almost perfect.

    • Bit bigger screen, but from reading reviews a good mid range phone with decent camera is Redmi Note 5 Pro. No b28 or NFC.

    • Thanks @Bappy. Thanks @Mckennal :D

  • Anyone know if the PASSWORD code can be used to for NZ postal addresses somehow? Doesn't seem to work despite nothing I can see in the T&C limiting where items are being sent.

    • Code doesn't appear to work using a friends address in Melbourne either…

Thanks for this, I had assumed that every post had just copy/pasted a typo!

      • 😆 LOL

  • Where does it state Band 28 on the listing? I can see B20 but not 28…

  • This or OP6?

    • I'm struggling with this too. I've got a OP3T that I'm keen to upgrade from.

This seems to have the better camera. I'm not that interested in their UI but I like that it's a Android P Beta device. I'm just concerned what happens at the end of the Beta. If I could get a vanilla Android on this going forward (rather than just the final beta) I'd probably jump.

  • Anyone had theirs ship yet?

    • I ordered mime this morning, estimated delivery between 8 June and 6 July! Hopefully arrives before 1 July!

      • Ordered on 24th, nothing as of yet….

    • Ordered on 23rd, still nothing.

      • On whirlpool, a few people have just had theirs shipped out…

        Just got this message:

"Due to the sudden increase in order intake, we need extra time for handling. Your parcel will be dispatched within 1-2days.
We sincerely apologize for the issue and inconvenience caused."

        • Hey guys, just got the message about my item picked up from DHL.

        • @xuan19391: when did you order yours?

        • @UNO:

          Jealous as hahahaha

        • @kakarot123: totally!

        • @UNO:

          When did you order UNO?

Seems like the guys on whirlpool who ordered on 22nd have had theirs dispatched.

        • @kakarot123: I ordered mine on the 27th, so I have another week or so to wait!

        • @UNO: My one was 23rd. I guess will arrive before Friday.

  • Nope, ordered on the 24th

    • Has it been dispatched yet?

      • I also ordered on 24th, contacted them and they just said it will be dispatched soon. Kinda annoying.

        • Yeah- how soon is soon!?

        • @UNO:

Reading some of the feedback on their page, some have given negative feedback because they waited for weeks before they were told it was out of stock… I hope this is not the case for us.

        • @kakarot123: If you check the website it says they order it from suppler it takes up to 5 days than they ship it..

        • @shadowrukia:

Where does it say that because on the product link, it says the item is ready for dispatch from the HK warehouse within 2 business days.

        • @kakarot123: Your looking at the wrong thing lol http://prntscr.com/jnjdrc proof there

      • No, still waiting. Someone on whirlpool said they were told dispatch would be 'mid' this week.

        • Hopefully they'll send them today or tomorrow then!

        • +1

@UNO: Finally got a reply last night to my queries about when it will ship:
"Due to the sudden increase in order intake, we need extra time for handling. Your parcel will be dispatched in these 2 days.
We sincerely apologize for the issue and inconvenience caused."

          @dickbeaver:

I got the exact same message yesterday

        • +1

@kakarot123: I just received this email too!

        • @dickbeaver:

Have you heard anything from them today?

        • @kakarot123: Nope, looks like 2 lucky punters on whirlpool got theirs sent. The rest of us are going to have to wait I think. There had been ~7 units ordered when I bought mine, looks like they ended up selling ~30, really hope they are sending in the order that the orders were placed.

        • @dickbeaver:

Yeah I ordered just in the afternoon on the 24th.
Yeah. I sent in 2 messages from yesterday and this morning and they haven't replied.

Pretty sure they just don't have it in stock and are waiting for it which is just a bit annoying since they said it would be within 5 business days.

        • @kakarot123: OMG I got a text saying DHL express from DGS group is on its way signature is required! sounds like my phone!

I dont think it goes by order since I ordered on 27th. Also not sure if this is the phone?

        • @shadowrukia: I got a text too! Expexted on Friday!

        • @UNO:

I also got this text I got it ~1hr ago!!!

Where did it say expected Friday?

        • @kakarot123: I checked the status on the DHL website. It said 1 June, which is Friday.

        • I got the txt as well, expected delivery…. Tuesday. At least it's on the way!

        • [@dickbeaver](/comment/5998387/redir: It's good it is on its way! I don't know why you'll get yours after me, considering you ordered yours 3 days before!

  • Just ordered mine, thanks.
what cases are people looking at?
    im looking at this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Fashion-Soft-Silicone-Phone-…

    • +1

The phone comes with a case, I might use the original one?

But damn, that one you linked looks really nice.

  • Mine departed from Hong Kong twice!

    • And now it has landed in Sydney!

      • +1

your so hyped so am i xD
        Mine landed in Melbourne woot

  • got mine!!! really happy

  • Mine got delivered this morning! 👍😊

  • +1

I would not buy from them, some people gotten scammed. No B28. some are getting china versions.

    • just saw this on whirlpool, I really hope I don't get a china version, a phone without B28 is useless to me

      • +1

Looks like mine isn't the global version M1803D5XE

        • model number m1803d5xa is global m1803d5xe is china. The listing is still showing and EAN/UPC of 6941059603436 which is for the global version, a return shouldn't be too hard as they have supplied the wrong item

        • Neither. I messaged them for a resposne and if there's any compensation. Wouldn't have bought otherwise.

        • @kakarot123: Did you just message them or request a refund as the item isn't as described?

        • @UNO:

I just messaged them and told them it was misleading and would liek to hear a response and potentially have compensation.

        • +1

What a shitshow, why would a seller on ebay think that no one would notice if they supplied the wrong version?

        • I've opened the box, used the phone etc. Not sure how I'd go getting a refund.I have emailed them via eBay.

I'll just have to wait and see now.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/xiaomi-mi-mix-2s/help/globa… someone here commented that flashing global rom in Chinese version unlocks all the bands… Not sure how to test it though.

        • @UNO: that cant be true. why lock bands? lol

        • @shadowrukia: aside from not having B28, the phone is great.

        • +1

I'm more than pissed, received mine and it's the china version. No use to me as there is no B28. Return requested, I'll be out of pocket for the cost. Don't buy from eglobal.

        • @UNO: how? i cant even get 4g with it. so useless

        • @dickbeaver: im trying as well. but they are copying pasting messages

        • @shadowrukia: haven't had a reply, they are probably dealing with multiple requests.

        • @dickbeaver:

I sent a message before 1pm. I sent maybe 2 since then and haven't gotten a response to anything.

I don't really want to pay much more out of pocket since they took a while to dispatch, and worried they'll send another one which isn't global version anyway.
