      • My wife and I attended pre natal classes run by the private hospital for a fee.
This would make a good intro for expecting parents to your services.

        Good luck.

        • It is free :)

        • @cuteduck:
This course ran over 4 classes, an hour per class.
Took us through the planning, what to expect, prenatal exercises, how to prepare/pack, going home, preparing for the new baby, arranging for home help and post natal problems and sleeping patterns.
Very basic stuff but for couples new to the experience, this was like a right of passage.
It was good to meet with other couples going through the same experience.

If at first you don't succeed… spam & spam again (after making a new account).

Definitely go around to the local GPs. Introduce yourself, bring food, even partnering up with a drug company for an education session/lunchtime lectures if you are that way inclined. Our practice refers only to specialists we have met in person.

    • Bi-annual lecture series with local GPs sponsored by private hospital and pharmaceutical companies

  • There's probably no finer recommendation for a specialist than "yes I trust that guy. He's the one who delivered my daughter." See if you can budget in some no-gap services for colleagues in the surrounding suburbs.

    • I do provide "no-gap service" to certain population (i.e. student/retirement/patient request/health professionals)
Most of my services are "known-gap gap"

  • BOGOF. All the demographers will recommend you.

  • Radio

Referral / Commission via GP practice.

Referral / commission to the local pharmacy.

I don't start searching for a good Doctor by checking out facebook and twitter, maybe that it just me

    • Did get a free radio interview with ABC recently :)

  • Ozbargain -

setup a competition ~ winner gets a year of free checkups for their immediate family.

  • Write useful articles related to your field and something to do with the season, time of year, etc. publish them on your website, but also approach the local media. Local papers and even TV journalists are often looking for good news stories or advice to fill space and this is a great way to get your name out there in a reputable way without actually costing more than your time!

    • Agree with all above :)
I have a dedicated blog section on my website

Most costeffective way is introduce yourself to the the areas GPs and bring some good food and tell them why you should get referrals

    • Yes, I have been doing it few times/year. I found it difficult to crack into referral base/pattern as some GPs have affliated with certain specialists

We would like to start own medical practice from scratch in an equal partnership.
I am an Accountant and two of friends are doctors and one is a physiotherapist in Western Australia.

We don't have any prior experience in running a medical practice and hence don't know where to start.

It is extremely unlikely that our new practice will be a competitor to anyone in this forum as we live in a very large country

Therefore I would greatly appreciate if current owners could provide us with advice and tips on starting a medical practice from scratch

My feedback is that you’re an accountant and have no business being involved in a medical practice. You need to leave it to the doctors who are more than capable of creating one themselves. The purpose of a medical practice is not to make you money, and that is your sole interest.

  • Aside from doing the basics (website, introducing yourself to local GPs, etc) the best way to build your practice is honestly to just be an awesome doctor. Patients and referring GPs will know this and you will get referrals. Take the time to communicate and follow up your own patients. If your circumstances permit, have a 24/7 emergency phone contact your patients can contact if they need urgent advice (especially obstretric patients). Have extra same day appointments available for urgent consults. Be available to take calls from referring GPs for phone advice. Send good and timely correspondence letters back to the GP to keep them in the loop.
