PULL5

DELIVERY: Free if you spend over $200 (e.g. 2 of these and a bottle of Bombay Sapphire), otherwise $17 in Brisbane (and I think less in Melbourne).

One of my favourites - possibly second only to Lagavulin 16 for me. Yes - I like my smoke and peat.

Occasionally available for $105 for a litre at Nick's store (https://www.nicks.com.au/laphroaig-quarter-cask-single-malt-…), but out of stock at the moment.

Currently $109 at gooddrop (so even the 20% off won't bring it down to this).

  • Gooddrop will work out to be cheaper if there's 20% off since it's free shipping.

Perhaps on one bottle. but it depends on your location. $10 delivery to Melbourne makes this $86. Gooddrop will likely be $87.20, so this is still cheaper. But for 1 bottle to other areas it is likely to be cheaper at Gooddrop (if they don't jack the price).

But for 2 bottles, Nicks will be cheaper per bottle. Cheaper again on 3 or any combination that gets you to a $200 spend… I've never paid for delivery from Nicks - I'd rather put that $17 towards more whisky!

      • My friends and I have tried Laphroaig 10 years before. Didn't like it at all. Perhaps "smoke and peat" didn't sit well with our taste buds (we were more into Glenfiddich, Chivas, JW, Gentleman Jack and the likes). Having said that, I'm open to giving the brand another shot, and that means getting just 1 bottle — it's $15 shipping to my place if I were to go with Nick's.

How does the this compare to the 10 btw?

Laphroaig is still Laphroaig. And Islay is still Islay. Though none are the same, Islay peat and smoke will be present. If you really didn't like the 10, I doubt you will like other Laphroaigs or Islays…

To put it simply, I think this is more "complete". Those who dislike the 10 but like the QC are more likely to be seasoned Islay whisky drinkers who dislike the gaps in the 10's palate. To me, the 10 is good. This is great.

If you would like to try an Islay, I'd suggest the Bowmore Dark and Intense, perhaps with a drop or two of water. I have introduced some friends to this, who would normally drink Speyside or Highlands. All enjoyed it. The sweet sherry balances out the smoke and peat to an extent.

I am also partial to Talisker 10 (Isle of Skye) and Highland Park 12 (Orkney Isles), either of which I think are more accessible than the Islay single malts. You might wish to consider these as you come down from the Highlands ;-)

Don't just buy a whole bottle lol. Try it at a bar first. If you don't like peat then definitely don't buy it. Sounds like you like weaker blended whiskies.

If you want to get into peat, buy the the trusty auchentoshan three wood.

This is a deal for Laphroaig, so perhaps don't need to comment that you don't like it.

if you don't like the 10yo stuff, then don't get this,
If 10yo is like being slapped with a wet trout, this is like having a whale dropped on you. there's bucket loads of smokey peat & seaweed in this.

Maybe try a smoother highland scotch like Aberfeldy.

If you wanted to get into peaty stuff, then maybe start with Bowmore -> Ardbeg -> Lagavulin -> Laphroaig

          @Trosticles:
I liked Talisker 10 on the spot and now converted to malt. I like Laphroaig even better. Got some 1L ones b4, should have used my wish20 for these.

        • @Jamesx: oh yes, Talisker would be a good starting point.

        • @Trosticles: Thanks. I've tried a Bowmore before (can't remember which) in a friend's place and found it nice.

Haha … I did the same mistake. This Whisky is not for me.
Very smokey and strong taste. Should have read the advertising on the bottle: #dividingopinions

        • Who buys a whole bottle of whisky before having a shot of it?

        • +1

@OnlinePred: me! Since most mates used to be cola mixing philistines, the only way to sample was paying $15-$20 for a nip in a bar. For 4-5 times the price I could get a bottle and if it was horrid, I could serve it up to the forementioned philistines. But I don't believe I've met a 10yo+ single malt that wasn't agreeable

        • @supabrudda: Oh haha.

Yea I started on Singles and worked my way through most regions. Different situations call for different types, and I agree a simple single malt will suit most, but every now and then when you match a certain type of whisky with the way you are feeling, you can get a magical pairing, more often than not, I am after more than a simple single malt ;-) Single malts for me are too plain, and sometimes too sweet or smooth, I prefer the real bang from peat. I do have more single malts than islays, but the islays I have are amazing, and isalys are the only ones I am comfortable spending more than $100 on.
