Redeem Bonus AEG 58V Chainsaw (Worth $299) When You Purchase a 58V Kit (e.g. Blower & Line Trimmer Combo $599) @ Bunnings

140

Saw this advertised in the local Bunnings store (Marsden Park NSW)
I've owned the trimmer and blower combo kit since February and it's been great! Just wish I could've got the bonus chainsaw back then :D
Pretty sure this is available nationwide, and it's available on other kits too such as the mower and the brushless line trimmer

  • So I got the 18v version, and don't see the need for the 58v. But I got the 18v version last year and registered it online for the extended warranty when I purchased it. Logging in and I was able to redeem the free charger for the current promotion. It actually came up and prompted saying you have the ability to redeem so I went through the process and got my freebie. So give it a go. You may be surprised

    • 18v version of what? Combo?

  • Any idea how long does the line trimmer work on a full charge. How does it compare with petrol ones in performance? Thanks

    • +1

Not sure on just the line trimmer, but we have 150m2 of lawn. A fully charged battery is enough to do all edges using Ryobi Expand-It attachment, whipper snipping, blow everything back onto the lawn before mowing and then blow afterwards and have over half charge remaining.

  • What's the difference between the line trimmer in this kit and in this kit?
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/aeg-58v-4-0ah-brushless-line-tri…

    • It doesn’t have a blower.

    • This trimmer and blower kit is a "promo" kit meant for AEG's 58V grand entrance to the Aussie market 2 years ago. Needless to say AEG's marketing has been piss poor since then, and there are promo kits in still in stock at Bunnings.

The regular kit has one less battery and no blower.

  • If you have a power pass (abn required) you can get a further 5% off bringing it down to $569.05
The trimmer lasts about 30-40 mins. It’s very powerful. I highly recommend the 58v range. I’ll never go back to petrol, the technology has finally improved to a point where there isn’t a needs for petrol and all the hassles that come with it. When you redeem the chainsaw online you get the warranty extended to 6 yrs and 3yrs for the batteries.

    • Yep, I agree. I've got the 58v chainsaw and it cuts really well, as long as you keep it sharp. Lasts a decent amount of time too.

  • I have bought 2 of these 58v trimmers and returned 2. They are rubbish, they don’t work, they keep losing power and stopping. They are very frustrating to use. Stick with a petrol trimmer. The blower works extremely well though. The combo kit is cheap as it has 2 batteries worth about $260 each alone, even if you throw the trimmer away.

    • I bought one last week and I have the same power cutting out problem with both blower and trimmer. It just stops and I have to pump the trigger few times before it starts working agaian. Its not due to overloading.

I read that they have had battery issues in 2016 causing it to cut out power randomly. Both my batteries are made in 2016 even though trimmer is 2017. I'm thinking how to solve this now. Can I just swap batteries at Bunnings or do I have to return everything for a replacement? I have never returned anything at Bunnings before. And I want a replacement not money back as I really like the trimmer. Any help would be appreciated

My battteries are from 2017 and I haven’t had any cut out issues. If you’ve registered your appliances and batteries on the aeg websites I’m sure it’s just a matter of getting the batteries replaced.

I rang aeg about power problem, they said it was a fault and to return to Bunnings. I exchanged for new combo kit and second one performed worse than 1st so I returned it as well for refund. I did notice batteries were from 2016. I thought they must have bundled old stock into promo kit. I used power pass card and for trimmer, blower, 2vbatteries and chainsaw it is very cheap, it works out at about 1/2 price. But if something doesn’t work it worthless. I suspect it is the trimmer. When trimmer was not working I placed same battery in blower even at lower charge and the blower kept running with problem. I have other age power tools which are fine but I can’t say the same for their garden range

If you put the same batttery into the blower and had problems wouldn’t it be the batttery that’s the problem? I’d be asking aeg to send you some 2017 batteries.

      • +1

I reckon Maca meant to say "blower kept running withOUT problem".

Pretty disappointing that AEG/Bunnings continue to sell gear with batteries they know probably have issues.

I'm in the market for a blower and have been eyeing this bundle off for a couple of weeks. I'm hesitant about moving battery garden gear in general and even moreso about the AEG stuff because there's really not a lot of feedback around. Hearing about this ongoing battery issue really doesn't instill a lot of confidence in the brand.

    • just out of interest, did the trimmer in your combo kit come with a shoulder strap?

Mine did, but I suspect this might be an inclusion only in later packs (2017?) as some older reviews of the trimmer criticise the lack of strap.

I also noticed mine came fitted with different bump head than others I've seen.

I've got the slimline 18/54v version with black centre. https://www.aegpowertools.com.au/outdoor/products/details/18…

Others 54v only version with orange centre. https://www.aegpowertools.com.au/outdoor/products/details/58…

no doubt the one I got is the crap version :)

      • To answer my own assertion, yes the slim head seems to be the crap one. Normal head line capacity is 6m but the slim version is only 3.6m (according to info on packaging. website info says 4.8m for both). Normal is fitted with round line, slim with twist line.

Bunnings AU don't sell both, but NZ do and the normal head is more expensive.

        • Pretty sure I saw both at Bunnings. I thought black one is the new model because assembly mechanism has changed for the head. Check the end of oztooltalk video on YouTube. Didn't realize black one is the Slimline and crap version until your comment.

        • @oxymoron:

Yeah I’ve seen that vid. His praise of how good the head was made me realise mine was different. I’m not sure if the slim head is better or worse.

BTW I reckon he’s doing it the hard way. No need to take the head off in pieces. Just jam the pin in and twist the whole head off by hand.

  • If only they'd swap the chainsaw for a pole-saw mini chainsaw thing

  • Interesting, this kit is $499 at the balcatta perth store

    • There is 4x left in store on the top shelf

    • showing as $499 on the website now

      https://www.bunnings.com.au/aeg-58v-blower-and-line-trimmer-…

I'm not sure if that price drop makes me more tempted or more skeptical.

      • I'm going to return mine tomorrow morning for a replacement. I really like the trimmer and its crazy power. I have emailed AEG about the issue this morning but didn't receive a reply yet.

If you are buying make sure the batteries are made in 2017. Look up the issues with old batteries in ECHO 58v range. This AEG is the same thing

        • Why are you returning it ? i checked and the serial number on the battery is 2017

        • +1

Couldn’t resist at $499. Date on the big box was 10/2017. Batteries inside are …J2017.

        • +1

@watts: Thats good to hear. I wanted to give AEG fair chance to solve my problem as I believe tools are totally fine and didn't wanted to return everything and see everything go to waste. So I have waited until 5pm to see if I get a reply from them and nah I didn't get any. So I went to Bunnings and got a refund. Bought it cheaper at another Bunnings store since they cut down the price by $100 since I got it. Thankfully new batteries are from 2017 and I have used the trimmer 2 times more than my previous one and no cutting out at all :-)

          @oxymoron:

          Nice. Good work.

Interesting AEG didn’t get back to you. I sent a query asking if I could swap to the other bump head and was told within a few hours to get stuffed.

        • @oxymoron:
Happy days. I agree with you. I still have faith that the tools are a good buy. I’m very impressed by the line trimmer and the power of the lawn mower. The 6 year warranty does make me feeel more comfortable than if I’d bought an ozito or something similar. Hopefully it’s just the 2016 batteries causing the problems. Btw my bump head is black, not sure of the line lenght.

        • @bennybaubles: Just got one where 31/10/17 packaging came with L2016 batteries which is annoying. I'm just going to straight out exchange it at a different store I think.

        • @tekisei:
Hopefully you can track some down and you’ll hopefully be sorted. If aeg know there’s a problem surely they can give you some new battteries. I got the free chainsaw a couple of weeks ago and it chopped through a log no worries. All up so far I’ve got no complaints.

        • +1

@bennybaubles: Cheers, managed to find some kits with 2017 batteries at Alexandria.

          Old kit with 2016 batteries:
          serial #2XX K 2017

          New kit with 2017 batteries:
          serial #4XX K 2017.

2 kits with serial #4XX left at Alexandria.

  • It’s not ideal but this article found a work around by pressing the charge indicator button after charging and this stopped the batttery going into protection mode.

    https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/stringtrimmers/Echo-cord…

  • Yes I was meant to say blower worked ok with battery. I wrote a complaint letter to aeg about trimmer with no response. With new price drop could be tempting if chainsaw and blower works ok. Price drop may be in response to new victa 84v range. These also have a 5 year warranty. Would be interesting to know if these work any better.

    • I haven’t yet seen a box set for the Victa. All seem to be sold separately.

    • just clearing stock and maybe a bit of EOFY. Blower is already a superseded model. Prob new trimmer soon if they follow echo. Free chainsaws because they might not be selling well after safety recall. Dump some old dodgy batteries.

Victa stuff looks good ass does stihl, ego, dewalt, makita etc but they’d be over double the price for the same kit.

  • I just wanted the chainsaw, this is a cheaper way of buying it with 2 batteries and end up with a free blower and whipper snipper.

Bought one of the kits and registered yesterday. Received an email this morning confirming the redemption chainsaw had been approved and will be shipped in the next 2 weeks. Here's hoping their customer service is just as impressive if I need warranty in the next 6 years.

  • Used the chainsaw today, put some chain lubrication in and had a charged battery. Worked for the first couple of cuts and now won’t work. Anyone else had any problems with the chainsaw ?

    • Doesn't sound like the same issue but have you tried the battery reset trick?

      https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/stringtrimmers/Echo-cord…

Does the same thing happen with another battery?

      • So I was worried about the old battery + trimmer issue and ended up swapping a kit with old batteries for a kit with new.

But today without pressing the power check button, I tried using an fully charged, old battery with the trimmer and it turned out fine.

        • I've given the trimmer, blower and chainsaw all decent tests now and I've had cut out issues with all when the batteries (J/2017) are fully charged. Will persist with them as is for a while and see how frustrating it is before trying for replacement batteries.

Other than the battery issue they're pretty bloody good.
