Serious question - is air shit enough to use it? Or would it be shit if everyone uses it and therefore commits to pollution by burning coal?

    • +5

It helps heaps with Allergies, dust, fur etc in the air

      • +2

It’s really best for removing particulates in polluted areas.

I’ve had no luck dealing with pollen allergies with an air purifier. When the flowers are out and the wind picks up, the pollen is going to find its way in, regardless.

I bought one of the biggest units on the market, put it in my bedroom, and it didn’t do a thing. If I left the window open even a crack, pollen came in, settled everywhere, and the air purifier did nothing to remove it before it triggered allergies. I guess pollen is pretty heavy in the grand scheme of things, so it doesn’t linger long in the air to be “purified”.

That said, there were no internal allergy sources - we keep the house clean. If you’re in a mouldy house with pets, or living near a smelter, it might do something.

Hey if you like, you can look into immunization programs. These do take forever and are longterm but may work for you

        • @Jonski:

Been there, done that. I went to get the original scratch test, and I reacted to almost everything they tested. They had trouble trying to work out the three main allergens I reacted to, because all the bumps merged together into one large mass.

Then I remembered that I'd had an antihistamine that day, and let them know. They said I shouldn't have reacted at all, and asked me to come back.

So I came back to get the scratch test again (without the antihistamine), and they did it across two arms, spacing the pin-pricks further apart. They all mostly merged together again, and both my arms ended up a swollen mess. But they managed to select three "good candidates" for immunization.

I had injections for around six years. In the end, they had to scale up the injections much more slowly than usual, so I was having weekly injections for two years, before going on to monthly injections for a few years.

My allergies are definitely better than they were, but I still take antihistamines every day, and end up with a horribly swollen face if the wind picks up, or I neglect to close the window when a neighbour mows their grass.

        • we run it after the windows are closed to remove dust etc that might of come in with the "fresh" air

        • @asa79:

It's decent with dealing with fine dust that is circulating around the room that way, but heavier particles (such as pollen) tend to land quickly once inside, and settle where they landed, until disturbed (e.g. when sitting down on the lounge, or laying down in bed).

The pollen tends not to find its way back over to the particular corner where the air filter is located very easily.

Air filters have their place, and can be effective at removing find dust and particulates. But I've tried even the largest air purifiers (I had a Blueair Pro XL when in the US), and I honestly can't notice a difference between having it on and off for pollen.

        • @marlor: Ours is near the window so catches alot

    • +3

I think the air in some places is so bad even farts can't be smelt, so every bit helps if you have a closed room in a polluted city.

problem is stuff needs to be air borne so crap on your furniture or carpet won't be cycled, still need to dust and vaccum.

      • +2

I hate it when you can't smell your own farts.

    • I own 2 cats so I find this really helps with eliminating odours and also with the fur, highly recommend for pet owners

    • The thing is you don't notice it in your own home, unless you know what you're looking for.

I 've always been dismissive of it, until I went to my brothers place last year.

Big difference to when I was last there, the main thing I noticed was the freshness, the lack of a 'man' lives here smell

  • Says USD 99.99

    • Should be $94.99 as latest email deal that came thru tonight

      • U poster $84.99 that got my hopes up, damn !!

        • Sorry I didnt realise till after i posted I got the US$ wrong.

      • Ozbargain strips out the email_exclusive_price tags.

Save an extra $5.45 for using the App

Just note that this is the first gen. There a second gen marked as 2S if I remember correctly.

    • +3

This is the 2nd gen, the 2S is an upgrade with LED. But nearly twice the cost.

For what I use for in Bedroom, I don't want the bright screen and it does the job and works with Home Assistant and schedule on and off work great

      • +1

I heard 2S has better sensor too that reacts quicker to air quality

        • +2

Yes that's true, but that's the only benefit (as well as OLED screen, I guess). It doesn't clean the air any better than the 2.

    • Nope, these are the 2nd generation.

The 3rd generation are marked as 2S.

      • +2

Apologies. I stand corrected. Bought one!:)

    • To add, first gen is actually better, but it's bigger.

  • lol, I am very curious if it'll really arrive in the quoted 15 days delivery time frame (to dodge the GST increase)

    • Yeah last lot arrived in 8 days for me, so I would imagine it would arrive within 15.

GST shouldn't affect pre-July invoices right? There is no requirement for a business to be issuing a GST invoice prior to July, so there should be no expectation that GST is paid at the border.

Invoice Post June 31st would accrue gst scrutiny.

      • +11

Invoice Post June 31st would accrue gst scrutiny.

I think invoices dated June 31 will also attract scrutiny…

        • +2

I think invoices dated June 31 will also attract scrutiny…

No, The invoices dated June 31 will NEVER attract scrutiny… as there will never be June 31st 😆

        • @OzSikh:
That's his point, as it's likely forged.

    • 7-15 days supposedly

    • You don’t have to worry about the tax change with this. The changed law is to collect the GST through the large online sellers like Amazon. Government didnt/wont hire thousands of officers to open the individual parcels coming from overseas and check the contents and invoices, then follow up for missing invoices or whether the sender already paid GST or not.

      • Logically thinking you are correct, but I'd love something official to back this up.

        • I doubt the government will officially acknowledge this.

    • I got email this arvo saying shipped

  • $2.89 postage

    • +2

Its free shipping if you purchase 2 or more

  • How much are filters? Where cheapest?

    • +1

I found the green enhanced/formaldehyde version on Ebay for $49 from an Australian seller.

Since I'm a tightarse, I'll most likely vacuum the filter each season and stretch its use as far as I can :)

      • How do you find that?

In the description it says: "Note: it's suitable for Original Xiaomi OLED Display Smart Air Purifier 2S / Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier / Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 2 / Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier Pro"

        • @Manh:No i meant vacuuming the filters?

        • @asa79:
I don't have it yet. Only just ordered it this week. I got the idea of vacuuming it from videos on YouTube.

  • Bought one, thanks

  • +1

    Thanks OP. Ordered 2

  • So just to confirm, is this unit the exact same model as the other Gearbest deal posted 2 weeks ago?

    • Yes just slightly cheaper

  • +2

The mad rush to get as much stuff as possible pre-July 1, 2x ordered, what's next? :)

  • Is this good for dusty environments? I live on a dirt road and when we have the windows open the dust just floats in….

    • It would pick up large particles. It would still get dusty though.

    • If its sitting under the window it should help better then not having one

  • Is this really useful?….

  • +1

does this air filter really help, with disallowing dust to fall on the floor/objects in the house?
i mean, does it make for less dusting?
or is it more for people with asthma, etc. ?

    • It's mostly for people concerned with air quality, removing small particles they are allergic to, smoke, smells, etc. Unfortunately you will still have to dust. I've had multiple air purifiers over the years and even with them running on high dust settles on things, probably just the large particles getting moved around due to the constant air movement.

    • +3

I think a robot vacuum helps more in regards to dusting than this one, but this air filter makes it even better if you already have a robot vacuum.
With our robot vacuum constantly cleaning the first floor on a schedule I hardly ever see dust on surfaces, but the second floor we don’t vacuum that often and that’s where all the dust is :(
But, that’s just my personal opinion as I’m only gonna but this thing now 😜

    • it will assist with removing dust etc from the air, but not going to get every bit of dust

  • -3

    Placebos are incredibly powerful

  • So are these mainly to filter air pollutants? I suffer from allergies all year (seasonal and dust), but I also live in a studio apartment in the middle of the city. Would this help?

    • Keep in mind it's only designed to filter an area up to 37m2 (and that's with the fan at turbo speed, with a noise level to match)

    • This works great in a large bedroom. You might need the pro size for apartment lounge

      • +1

I live in a studio apartment in Tokyo, so it’s not big by any means ;)

  • +1

I bought this at $126 last week. Since having it there has been a notable dust reduction, air smells less smelly.
Although my air quality seems to be excellent most of the time. Reading goes from 60ish to 12 in about 40 minutes.
Haven't used it enough to tell if it's effective or not. I'm trying to find a decent interface to log the readings.

What's everyone else's readings if you got one?

    • Cheers for the update. I'm really keen to know how well it does with dust (which you've said has been good), but also whether it has the effect of dehumidifying aswell.

      • +1

Well usually dust would pile up on my piano cover in about 2-3 days so far it's pretty clean. We are not talking about dust disappearing completely. But the amount it's come back is less. I have to do a room decontamination soon which means pulling everything out and carpet cleaning. The dust level is getting less. Saying that i only have run it about 2 hrs a day for a week. I don't think this dehumidifies, if it does i haven't noticed any change.

  • will this clean up my flatmates leaking pot smell into my room?

  • Does this require an adapter to work in AU power points?

    • The CN plug works in the AUs power point. GB sent an adapter anyways in the package. So bonus adapter i guess!

  • Shopback now giving 3% cashback

  • What does it cost to run ? And does it run 24/7 or when a quality level hits a certain point or time based ?

We have a two level house (and 3 cats - all indoors, and 2 dogs) - thinking about whether we'd need one on the lower level (where the bedrooms etc are) and one on the upper level (which is the large living space - kitchen/dining/living room)

    • There is auto mode and full mode. You can schedule via app to turn on and off when not needed

  • Having a look at this at Zapals (and I assume other sites) it seems like there's 3 or even more versions for sale ?

    The 2S with OLED
The 2S with OLED in a "Pro" version
    The Max

There doesn't seem to be an easy way to compare them unfortunately !

    • +1
      • 2S is a version 2 model (the one being sold in this post) but with OLED. Uses the same filter as version 1.
      • Pro is a taller version of 2S because it houses a more powerful fan. Uses the same filter as version 1.
      • Max is the biggest with a big fan and uses different filters.
  • Cheers got one

  • +1

How to configure this in Home Assistant https://www.home-assistant.io/components/fan.xiaomi_miio/

  • I ended buying the 2s with OLED from ebay for approx $193 AUD if anyone else was interested in the higher model for a little more.

    • Thats not a bad price

  • One of two ordered arrived today, well built and engineered, easy to set up, came with Aus plug (although missing the mandatory insulation on active and neutral pins, but no biggie), plenty of options in the Mi Home app, the Chinese are getting pretty damn good at some of this stuff.

  • I bought 3 more, and got all 3 of them today, no issues at all

  • +2
  • Received my 2 today. Ready to setup and runs beautifully.
