Bought this with the last deal. Only found good reviews. Is a good little thing however, there is an issue with the YouTube app. Even after the latest update some YouTube videos will refuse to load. Just something small to consider, nothing more then an annoyance especially when my Hisense N7 does something very similar haha.

    • +10

I watch YouTube videos every day on mine without any issues.

      • You must be lucky. I have 3 boxes and one of them is having that youtube app issue.
Other than that, it's working perfectly fine.

      • Want to trade? I'll throw in my universal power adapter as well???

    • No issues here.

    • +1

I'm assuming you're on the Android N Beta, try SmartYouTubeTV. It works on my Mi Box with the N beta and it's also ad free.

    • Works fine for me also.

    • +2

What OS version and build are you using? Marshmallow build 1901 works fantastically and is the best choice currently for the Mi Box.

Here's a downgrade guide if you need it:

    • Might be your internet, router or firewall

  • How long is shipping from this site?

  • +5

This thing is ancient now. I'd go with the Vodafone TV.

    • +3

Really happy with mine still waiting for Android 8 update though.

      • +3

+1 the Reddit threads made it sound like broader release was imminent, but there's been radio silence since the start of May.

        • +1

There was a new build pushed this week that doesn't have the beta tags, so maybe that's a sign?

        • +1

All the testing screenshots show it's intended as a release candidate, not an on-going beta.

The last release changelog literally said 'fixing spelling and grammar' according to those same people, so you can't help but feel it's getting its final touches.

        • @jasswolf: here's hoping!

    • vodafone is 7.1 and Mi box is releasing 8.
No mention about vodafone releasing 8

  • Does this have any benefit over Chromecast?

    • +5

      Yes. Many.

A Chromecast is nothing more than a wireless second display. This is a completely independent device (with the bonus of also being Chromecast compatible).

    • +1

Well, it does AC WiFi and 4K, like a Chromecast Ultra, but costs less. It has a remote and can be used on its own without a phone. It's sometimes more convenient than having to use your phone and cast something. Especially when at times my phone can't find the Chromecast :/
Oh, and it has an audio out which supports toslink optical, so I can plug in my wireless headphones receiving lossless audio.

Apparently, the Oreo update (which supposedly is coming) has the assistant built in.

    • Kodi
I have these and a Chromecast Ultra. I barely use the chromecast

  • How does this compare with the Nvidia Shield?

    • NVIDIA shield is a lot more powerful but also a lot more expensive depends really what you want to use it for. The shield would be better for gaming but they both run Android tv os so if you only want a box for media playback and streaming one of these would do the trick.

    • Cheaper

  • How is shipping from joybuy?
Is it a week or a month?

  • Has anyone one used these with Ethernet over USB, or can recommend a box with Ethernet at a similar price point?

    • +3

Yep - I use the Ugreen one below, which works well:

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UGREEN-USB-Gigabit-LAN-Ethernet-…

…although that then makes it $100, which is only $20 less than the Vodafone TV:

      https://www.vodafone.com.au/vodafone-tv

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/5912735/redir

      • There is no information to say if vodafone TV is 100mb or 1gb nic

        • -1

100 Mbps. Which will give better real world performance than 1300 Mbps wireless, but wired Gb would be nice.

        • @OZB Al: not true I am using wireless Ac and can't fault it performance. Might be your access point if you don't see faster then 100mb

        • @asa79: Peak speed of one way wireless AC is not anything like a true indicator of a true network speed. You will get no where near full AC speeds with a sustained data transfer.

I'm in no way saying that wireless AC will not be able to give faultless performance for video streaming, 20 Mbps is more than enough for 4k. When you do a real world test of sustained data throughput it will not meet the performance and reliability of a 100 Mbps cable. Video streaming requires a consistent, smooth, reliable network, wired was built for that, wireless was not.

Read the IEEE 802.11ac standard to find out why, it's all there.

        • @asa79: There is nothing wrong with my wireless streaming, it works fine and reports speeds well over 100 Mbps.

And when I plug in the 100 Mbps Ethernet cable it works even better.

        • @OZB Al: I have unifi Access point and get much faster transfer then the 200mb out of the usb to GB adapter

        • @asa79: Me too, Unifi AC Pro, right next to the Mi Box, great connection speed. And for a faster sustained transfer rate I plug in to the 100 Mbps Ethernet cable.

        • @OZB Al: you get drop out on your wireless?

        • @asa79: None at all. You really should run a test from your server to devices on each network, I expect you'll see a slower round trip speed, more jitter and more dropped packets on your Wi-Fi, that's how Wi-Fi works. And make sure that you've got AC band steering, network fairness and channel width set right on your UniFi before your test.

        • @OZB Al: I have run tests in android and shows very fast and reliable speeds via wireless AC, so wondering why you saying you dont get reliable fast wireless speeds

      • thank you

    • Will max out at 200mb Wireless AC is faster

There is an Android box which sits in between the Xiaomi and Nvidia Shield - the Mecool M8S PRO L Which is a genuine Android TV firmware like the Xiaomi as opposed to phone/tablet like most Chinese boxes.

    The Mecool is Android 7.1 v 6.0
    3GB Ram v 2GB
    16GB Internal storage v 8GB
Ethernet & Dual WiFi v Single WiFI (I think)
    2x USB ports v 1
1x micro SD card slot v none
    Amlogic S912 v S905x processor.

So in just about every area the Mecool is a more powerful device for just a few more dollars.

    http://vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemDescV…

I have one and am delighted with it, no freezes, no glitching or carrying on like many chinese cheapies. I know about them after having had 15-20 of them over the past 5 years or so. I've just ordered a second for my other TV.

    • Can you enable 'adb over network' on that box?

    • +4

Still an unofficial box, means no google cast which is pretty useful.

    • +2

Can you tell us if the Mecool has ABC iView and SBS on Demand?

      • You have to instal the apps yourself, which is easy enough but not from the Google Play store as the ABC and SBS only officially have a phone/tablet version of the app. That said the Mecool will instal and function okay with the APK downloaded and installed via the web browser. I also have streaming apps from the US - NBC Sports and from the UK BBC iplayer, ITV hub and Zattoo from Switzerland.

The box has certification for 4K Youtube and 1080p perhaps 4K Netflix.

    • The MeCool runs LibreELEC too?

      • Doesnt do Netflix 4k

      • +1

yes, it does. I am using it.

        • 4k output but wont be 4k netflix, there is no mention of this having certifications

    • Is not android TV

      • you can install android tv rom it and dual boot libreelec

  • Is there any indication of when a Xiaomi Mi Box 4 might come out?

EDIT: looks like it's already out: https://www.gearbest.com/tv-box/pp_1625684.html

    • China only box though

      • 905L cpu ….. Would have expected better eg 912

        • Yeah doesn't look like much of an improvement. I was hoping for better!

    • +1

      They are similar specs anyway

  • Does this box do real video outputs at 1080p or 4k?

I had the 2nd gen Xiaomi box. The spec says it can play 1080p videos but it actually compresses 1080p videos to 720p for the actual output.

    • 4K

  • Does it work with Harmony 650?

    • Yep - it has an IR receiver, and is in the harmony database.

  • Coupons seem to have run out

  • I've got add in classified if someone wants to pick on up from Sydney CBD. I still have receipt and warranty.

Android TV 8 is coming to the Mi Box soonish. This would mean Mi Box will be 8 while the Vodafone TV will probably stay on 7.1 for a while unless Vodafone releases an update

    https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/05/01/android-8-0-oreo-ro…

The rollout of Android TV 8.0 has been slow, to say the least. The Nexus Player received Oreo as its final update, and the Nvidia Shield won't get it until later this year. The Xiaomi Mi Box was released internationally in 2016, and even though performance was sub-par, it was still a popular Android TV box for a while. In a strange turn of events, the Mi Box might get Oreo before the Nvidia Shield.

One user on Reddit has received Android 8.0 Oreo on their Mi Box, with the April 1st security patch level included. They had signed up for the Mi Box's beta program, but there is no indicator that the Oreo OTA is a beta build. Xiaomi may already be starting the rollout, with beta testers being in the first batch.

    • +1

weren't we supposed to get the nugget update, which supposedly 'leaked' to some. many installed it manually and experienced issues..

  • I have one in classified section. I'm selling mine because I really don't need it. Just impulse buyer. PM if interested (Melbourne stock)

  • I just bought it, I have literally no idea what it does. What does it do

    • +1

What doesn't it do… Omg, congratulations, this device shall change your life 😆

    • connect to your tv and watch netflix, abc ivew, sbs etc and has its own remote so you don't need your phone.

  • Does it work with foxtel app? (Used to be called foxtel go, not foxtel now).

  • I'm disappointed with mine (from last deal).
No SBS on demand or ABC iView apps on Google play.
Playing movies off my Diskstation NAS is had to find right film , and no where near as good as WDTV live.
Issues with loading with the Netflix app.

    • +1

You just need to sideload the apps like ABC iView which is quite simple.

    • As ausbob71 said, apps can be sideloaded pretty easily. As for movies, set up something like plex or kodi, it will make a world of difference.

  • Hmm…

Has this deal already expired or have I made a mistake somewhere?

    Subtotal(1 items): US$106.24
    Discount: US$21.25
    Shipping: US$0.00
    Total: US$84.99

    • What was the issue? I’m having same problem. Coupon says added but price won’t go down!

  • sorry…never mind…

I figured out the problem with my order….

  • For someone who's happy with inbuilt TV YouTube and Netflix apps (with their own dedicated buttons etc), does this still have much more to offer? Or will I be wasting money buying something which offers similar stuff I already have? Thanks

    • this is for non smart tvs.

Will give you everything sony android tvs do

    • I've a newish Sony TV with inbuilt TV YouTube and Netflix apps (with their own dedicated buttons etc) and am not impressed with :
a/ the Miracast system - real pain to cast from the PC ; works 25% the time, from the phone it works but is ugly
b/ using the TV remote as a cumbersome keyboard to browse Youtube
c/ Browser is ok and accepts the USB Keyboard I've connected to the TV, but this setup isn't used that much

tbh, I much rather go to the the older TV with Chromecast , use my phone and queue up YouTubes videos there. and Netflix. etc
I can also cast my desktop to the Chromecast with confidence.
I've even moved my non-HD Chromecast to the newish TV just for casting my desktop once

I'm inclined to get something like a Chrome Cast Ultra for the newish Sony TV, so this device might fit the bill, it's just not a priority for at this stage

    • Probably would be wasting your money.. Unless you have a 2nd tv you could use this on.
Or if this one does VPN app, then can watch US netflix.
US netflix is undoubtedly my favorite (and probably only) useful feature, of my new Sony Andoid Tv , compared with my old tv, which had netflix, youtube, stan etc, similar to what you have I guess, (dedicated buttons for youtube/netflix) .
When my tv asked me to sign in with my google play account, and when I noticed I can download an abundance of apps/games etc, that seemed cool at first, but then I realised, that almost everything I do on android, I prefer to use my phone for such apps.
If this box will run ExpressVPN app, then I am thinking of buying 1 of these just for my 2nd Tv in bedroom, so I can watch US netflix instead of Aus restrictive content.

  • +2

This tv box has to be xiaomi's most successful product. After 2 years it is still on the market, nothing changed/upgraded and price remained the same

    • like an apple product ;)

  • i have a minix x8-h plus. Will this be a huge upgrade from that? (other than me being stuck on kitkat)

  • Would we be able to download and use 'optus sport' app on this device? Thanks in advance

  • Even after adding coupon price won't go below $84.99 Is there a trick?

    • Just checked still working, try refreshing page. Coupons are valid till 15/06

  • Has anyone received a confirmation email post purchase?
The only thing i have received is a paypal receipt

  • I only see a discount of $21.25 but that's already there regardless of the coupon. Coupon shows as added but price shows $84.99 tried refreshing many times.

  • Guys, how can we install Amazon prime ? Please help…bought it and received it today…upadated to orio , but has limited apps which we can install…prime not one of them…was watching youtube and US version has that app pre-installed !!!!?
