To be honest, I would rather this set for $186 with the TA code:
    https://goo.gl/u9bkPC

If i was going to get a Japanese knife set you'd want it to be at least VG10 carbon stainless:
    https://www.japanny.com/pages/japanese-knife-blade-steels
    https://www.knivesandtools.com/en/ct/steel-types-for-kitchen…

The Global Teikoku set is no better than the Crofton stainless set that ALDI sells once in a while for $20.

    • Wow those look a lot like Shun knives, but they are half the price

    • They look identical to these Chinese made ones on AliExpress:
      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Brand-Damascus-Knives-5-…

      • They probably are, and if they are cheaper there then I would get it. It doesn't even matter if they're not that sharp or Chinese copies, they are "more Japanese" from the fact they are made of VG10 damask which allows them to be sharpened at say 15 degrees angle. Owning "proper" Japanese knifes, you're purchasing them for the prestige of the metal and the ability to be able to sharpen them beyond stainless sets. Getting those Global Teikoku is like paying for branding and marketing of a $20 knife set

VG10 is probably the hardest and most sharpen-able stainless steel

        • I have exactly the same knives in the AliExpress URL. The Damascus look is fske, and the wood is fake too. I wouldn't be surprised if it's not actually Vg10.

        • @Robbietheknobby:

Yeah but XYj has been around for a while. And they do sell a fake set and clearly advertise it… with stainless steel grade a notch below the teikoku set (7Cr17MOV):
          www.aliexpress.com/item/6-Piece-Set-High-Quality-Stainless-S…

Now If you look at this example, it clearly says "VG10 (core)". This is how most VG10 knives are commonly prepared, where the core is sandwhich between a lower grade but more stainless steel for longevity in the household. It makes sense economically, after all, household owners will never use them an sharpen them at the same rate of a sushi chef:

THIS diagram for reference on manufacturing cross-section:

      • They are the same brand knives. Xy for both
