[ACT] 25% off Electricity and Gas Usage Charges @ ActewAGL

130

25% off your electricity and gas usage charge if you setup up direct debit billing and set your bills to be sent to you via email. This discount does not apply to the supply charge.

No idea how long this has been running for but it has presumably only started recently. The discount lasts for a year after which at that point you probably want to review and compare electricity/gas rates from other providers as Choice recommends shopping around reguarly.

Found via mention in this article, https://the-riotact.com/relief-in-sight-from-electricity-pri…, spoke to Actew on the phone and confirmed, then found the direct link to the PDF.

You may need to register an account online in order to access the option to change your bills to email. Certainly the wait on the phone can be long at any time so your best bet is to do that rather than try do it over the phone.

  • Has anyone done a comparison between ActewAGL vs Origin for ACT lately? Origin is also running a 25% discount at the moment. And Origin has also said that they will not be increasing tariffs from 1 July 2018 in the ACT.

I did a few weeks ago, but I'll need to check the figures again. I think Origin was cheaper (but not by a huge amount).

      I'm with Origin.

Pricing is virtually identical, but you get much better service with Origin and their online account thing is much better. You can see all your previous bills and track your usage quite intuitively.

Plus vote for the deal post and those who are happy with Actew, but I'd much rather Origin.

  • Good deal for existing customers who are not considering switching. Those using other suppliers should of course compare their actual rates after discounts have been applied, as the base rates for different suppliers vary so 25% off with one supplier may be worse than no discount with one who has a cheaper initial base rate. I hate all this "nn% discount" from energy suppliers without mentioning what their actual rates are. There should be some sort of comparison rate like they have with bank loans. That's one reason why I changed to my supplier a few years ago (Momentum) as they don't do discounts - they just provide the cheapest rate they can. They aren't the only ones out there who do that, and you may get a good deal with one of the other suppliers once the discounts are applied, so it is definitely worth hunting around to find one that provides you (based on usage and location) the best deal.

  • Just be aware when switching providers.I switched and on receiving my first bill realised that my new electricity/gas retailer applied the discount only to the actual consumption, excluding the supply charge which is approx. 30% of your net bill. In other words I got the 25% discount on 70% of the bill amount. I have yet to figure where this is a standard discounting practise across all retailers???

    • Always read the fine print. With this deal it also states "A 25% discount guaranteed off electricity usage charges" so not supply or any other charges. I was burnt by my old supplier who promised "one month free" but never delivered because their billing system was rubbish. Again, I personally prefer a good rate with no marketing discounts that can be subject to all sorts of clauses.

    • It's pretty standard.

Unfortunate that to get 25% off, you have to agree to them direct debiting your account.

    • Yeah seems more like they are punishing the customers who don't use direct debiting. I seem to have managed to put an end to Actew 'estimating' my bills and as they seem to get them right the first time these days I don't mind the direct debit.

    • I agree. Direct debit gives no control whatsoever on when and how you pay.

I pay all my bills with credit card so I know where to look in the future for all bills (one spot). Its always paid off in full, but I avoid having too many transactions on the savings account due to fees.

It's a deal breaker for me, plus I've been very happy with Origin. Not one headache with anything in 3 years since moving to them. Actew was always stuffing up every now and again (their estimations are a joke!), and their customer service is horrendous.

Giving them a free pass to my bank account? Yeah, no thanks.

      • Its good that Origin has worked out well for you. We tried Origin, and it was a nightmare. Every bill was wrong. Some estimates were four times as much as the bill should have been, and a lot of other errors. Actew has been a breath of fresh air in comparison.

      • You can choose frequency of payments. Opt for payment by due date lump sum rather than PAYG

      • The 25% off deal with Origin also has direct debit only…
