  • Nice, great price.

  • Previous deal was on March for 148. Definitely a great prcie

  • Good price excellent device. Battery light is less than the cheaper model due to the backlight but IMHO it's worth the extra.
We have both models and the mrs powers on in the dark with the backlit model while i have to use a side lamp. I will upgrade in a year or 2

  • Says I've used the code too many times :(

    • Starts 10am

      Try again
      Is working now

  • Have two older paperwhites already (dropped one in a pool, bought a replacement, first one started working again eventually).

    • +1

      It fixed itself?

      • +1

        Probably dried out.

        • I suspect dried out. Kinda worked briefly afterwards, then not at all, then a week later (after replacing) I threw it on a charger and all was well.

      • self healing, did you bring it to Byron Bay? Or Lourdes (FR)?

  • I want to get one of these but Im not sure I can justify it. If I have a light-weight tablet what can this do that it cant other than longer battery life? Also I assume I can only read kindle books and nothing from other formats like books borrowed from the libraries electronic catalogue…. that would be a major limitation for me….What other options are available? kobo or some other generic android based e-reader that anyone can recommend?

For some people reading a phone or tablet causes eye strain , the Kindle is more akin to reading a book with a light shining onto the pages rather than directly I to your eyes.

I'm unsure about borrowing limit rsry books. But you can convert DRM free books to the Kindle format using Calibre. Like I said I can't comment on borrowing books but I love my Paperwhite.

I haven't tried similar products like the Kobo Glo, etc.

Edit: Sorry wrong sub-thread. This is to OP.

E-Readers are different to tablets in screen. They use e-ink screens which require drastically less power to operate (only require power to change the page). The Paperwhite's light is a side-light so it doesn't shine directly into your eyes like backlit screens (LCD etc.).

Calibre will convert any other format to Kindle no probs (DRM free or not).
They do work with electronic libraries/borrowing programs.

I've used Kobo, Nook, cheap Android knock-offs and stuck with multiple Kindles for a reason. They are the best.

I've had the original Paperwhite since it came out and it's still going strong.

        • Last time I checked calibre won't convert the new Amazon drm format. I had to downgrade kindle.ib my computer to get access to old azw format to do that.

    • +6

Longer battery life, much, much more pleasant reading experience. You can convert between most ebook formats (e.g. Calibre is very good - https://calibre-ebook.com/) so you can read pretty much any ebook file you can get from anywhere on them.

    • Kobo Clara HD has just been released and that will read most formats but a bit pricier than this offering .

      • Any info on Australian pricing?

    • +1

CLEARink is meant to be a game-changer so Im still unsure about buying now….

    • Less distractions!

  • Is it the same as paper white 3?

    • +1

Must be - it's the only one with the 300ppi display (PP1 & PP2 have 212ppi displays) - I just ordered one to replace my aging Paperwhite V1 (also only PP3 is available in white case)

  • I've had a kindle paperwhite that I lost but have since gotten an older touch model. Can't really say there's much difference. Slightly crisper text - it is important if you read books with maps and diagrams as I can't make them out on my current kindle. I never really used my back light as much as I thought it was going to. $30 is probably worth it over the regular model.

    • +4

Do you read at night at all? I had a Touch but then moved to a Paperwhite and it is like …Night & Day.

No need to worry about being in the correct light to read, I would never want to go back to one without a backlight.

      • Ive got i believe the kindle 4 haha. So i have no idea what im missing :( i kept putting off getting calibre and setting up books. Like it always seemed easier to pull a physical book out than work out which ebooks i should targrt and which i should leave as a physical book haha

    • I read with a very low light on the Kindle at night; perfect because it doesn't keep me awake like full on light, and it turns itself off if I fall asleep.

  • +3

Love my paperwhite, on my second. Just figured out I can send books by email from calibre directly - saves mucking around with usb

    • Wow, didnt know you could do that!

    • Sending directly to kindle (I send mine via Gmail), means that I always have my whole book collection sitting in my Gmail account should I need to send them anywhere else in the future.

    • +1

I use the Send To Kindle app on my pc

      https://www.amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle/pc

      • Notably, not for Windows 10.

    • Wow, I had no idea. I've just gone and set this up. Thanks!

  • This is my second one , the old one still keep going

  • +1

Thanks OP! Bought one. And only $5 delivery is brilliant too (nearest TGG store is 100km away)

  • I had ordered a Kobo aura from Myer a few days ago. Would have preferred this. So bought this, will send the aura back in it's original postage box when it arrives. Thanks op!

  • Very tempting!
I tried an Onyx Boox a little while back. Wasn't as smooth as I hoped due to storage issues, but these look promising https://goodereader.com/blog/electronic-readers/these-are-al…

How is this compared to oasis? Worth paying extra bucks for oasis?

  • Can anyone suggest store to download kids story books (like one from David Walliams, Roald Dahl, Jeff Kinney) in pdf format to convert to kindle format later? Thanks

    • +1

Why download as PDF? The formatting there often makes conversions to ebook a pain (requires a lot of tweaking to make it bearable).

      • Amazon kindle format books are more expensive than the paperback available in kmart/bigW.
So I was hoping to get pdf and convert using calibre.

  • Thanks OP, bought one.

  • Thanks OP got one for the Wife…

  • Thanks. Pulled the trigger

  • can anyone recommend a good lightweight case to go with it!?

    • Why? Case is unnecessary.

      • I want a case to reduce scratching on the screen? (yes people might say get a screen protector) But I dont know. I'm weird.

        • I believe you can buy screen protectors

        • The displays aren't as fragile as mobile phones (and they're not normally sitting in a pocket with keys etc); cases and screen protectors are unnecessary. I've had Kindles for years now (including a year or so of travel with it in the backpack) and they were fine. If you're planning on home use, no need, if you plan on lots of travel I guess it might be safer for when it's in transit.

    • I got a case only for stopping other things like key , mobile phone ..crush into its screen , and the case will turn it off when close , but the screen protector is not need .

  • Thanks OP. Been waiting for a deal on these. Bought one

  • Bought one of these in March. I honestly didn't think I'd use it much, as I sold an iPad mini awhile back due to lack of use. But it's my go to reading device now.
