Streaming video data individually to hundreds of thousands of customers via the Internet… if only we had a broadcast technology where almost everyone could enjoy the show by putting an aerial up…

    • +5

Or some type of fibre to the home.

    • Whatever happened to IP multicast?? That was so hot 10 years ago!

  • -3

Sorry not good enough Optus. Make it free for rest of the games on SBS

It's the only way to apologise.

Also i don't consider this as bargain because SBS had the rights last few world cups not sure what happened. It is meant to be free

Only reason? Government cut costs and don't bother spending money

    • +3

DO you read or just post? SBS sold the rights to optus.

      • -4

Sold the rights for money of course. Greed and discard the public interest. Reason already given above. So not sure wth

I see you a dedicated Optus fan. So here's your down vote for mine to yours.

        • They took our jerbs!

  • Barry is from Timbuktu. Barry is on ADSL, lives 18km from the nearest exchange, experiences frequent dropouts, and his line speed is abysmal. I want to see how Optus is going to fix Barry's problems in 48 hours, so he can stream flawlessly.

    • +6

Barry has zero possibility of ever getting ADSL working on an 18km long line.

    • +2

Barry is shit out of luck.
Tell him to send a complaint to SBS and voice his opinions

    • …Dont be like Barry

    • By the sounds of it not just Barry, also his mates Larry and Garry!

  • I didn’t even know that they offered out the World Cup for $15. I borrowed my friends login who doesn’t watch it but would’ve paid if I’d known (maybe glad I didn’t in hindsight given the issues).

  • +2

Thanks op, but after that frog admitting faking being tripped for the penalty kick, I am done watching football.

    • +1

A soccer player diving? Shouldn't you have stopped watching like a few decades ago then? lol

  • For anyone streaming or considering streaming on the xbox one using optus, replays seem to work fine. Just issues with live coverage for me.

    • Are you saying you can only watch replays but not live streaming on the Xbox?

I'm glad I didn't pay $15, it's the one time using unlicensed streams hasn't made me feel guilty.

  • +1

Locked in. No sleep tonight then.

    • Sore throat tomorrow?

  • +4

lol at public broadcaster fixing up some busted private infrastructure.

    I'm swimming in schadenfreude!

  • +6

I just can't understand their comments the other day about underestimating demand.

It's the World Cup, pretty much the biggest sporting event in the world.

They could have easily checked viewing data from the last World Cup on SBS and realised their app would be under the pump.

Ps. SBS had no issues with streaming on their app. Take note, Optus.

    • +1

Ps. SBS had no issues with streaming on their app. Take note, Optus.

Exactly, SBS OnDemand works perfectly. Will the games airing on SBS in the next 48 hours be on OnDemand?

  • Unfortunately, Italian and Dutch (Robben) players can't dive in this world cup…

  • +6

Can't believe Australian Telecom is struggling to provide live sports streaming service to mere 30-40k subscribers.

I am watching on Airtel TV ( Free with Indian SIM) 8 live sports channels ( includes all damn sporting events happening in the world) and 30 other entertainment channels with out a glitch. All I am paying is $2 a month :) to keep my number active.

Hotstar streaming service recently hit record viewership of 10.6 Million on IPL final, total of 202 Million watched IPL on Hotstar.

Telstra is struggling to even provide basic telecom service consistently.

    • -1

are you in india or australia?

      • Australia..works fine here in Oz but have to pay roaming rental Rs99 every month and send one SMS/phone call every month to keep service active.

    • Being a previous Optus Cable customer and experiencing their profiteering, overloading, and neglecting their infrastructure ways … it's not that hard to believe anymore!

  • +1

I've tried using the app last night and had the errors, but thankfully never had issues using the browser on the laptop.

Having it on SBS HD 60Fps is even better though.

  • +7

How can we overload Optus so that they’ll be forced to allow SBS to broadcast all the remaining games in the WC?
    I’m happy to participate

    • +2

Some one should set up bots and do DDOS on their website and servers preferably without a trace using VPN tunnnels and no log traces (j/k)

I’m sick of Optus ripping people off not providing service

Government decided to sell broadcast rights off SBS for a quick dime and things turn out crap

SBS is fine as is don’t understand why make things complicated

If the network app or platform is not ready don’t provide the service and don’t charge for it

Optus should save their face give out refunds and all remaining games back to SBS to show

  • +6

You can catch all the streams on /r/soccerstreams over on Reddit

    • It's a pity they don't provide links & streams to all the post game stuff and daily "Match of the Day" type equivalent highlight shows. They are easily the best content available for those of us who work and cant watch 6 hours+ of soccer a day at the moment.

    • Did not know this certainly better than paid methods

  • +1

anybody got an australian timezone worldcup fixture poster?

so far i got this one but it's a lot of pages

    • The easiest way is to find a calendar subscription (ics/ical).

  • On ya face Optus!

  • Its really becoming frustrating , they want our money but they will only provide limited or no service.

look at Amazon Prime , Netflix they charge us same as in US but the library size is joke..those guys even blocked access to US library through VPN. I don't even bother about Stan.

    • Telstra/Foxtel is part of the reason the Netflix library is so small, they have the rights for quite a bit.
Never going with Foxtel after the Game of thrones fail myself.

    • Stan is good. Lots of good shows. Billions and Imposters just finished, waiting for Better Call Saul.

    • Getflix still works I believe

  • Weird. I've had nothing smooth sailing for all the World Cup matches via the optus app and chromecast.

    • Yeah me too, so I am very surprised with all the complaints.

      • -2

Because people are paying that much $15 per month they are entitled to complain, I guess…

        • +1

They can if there is no alternative and what they are paying for doesn't work.

Most people are having issues with stuttering and buffering which is why SBS are showing the games for the next 48hrs.

Do you really think they would do that if everything was running fine?

  • I wish Optus would just get bought over by some big Chinese telco now. Their CEO and services are just freaking useless!

    • +7

You realize they’re owned by the Singaporean government

      • +2

Our government sells assets off to giveaway tax cuts to billion dollar businesses, other governments own private companies and invest.

Such a ridiculous mob we have in charge.

  • Just when I subscribed to Optus Sport yesterday… :/

  • -3

    Dae Han Min Guk!

      • As much as I like Korea, I have got to say their team this year isn't the best. The defence looks shaky and the scoreline was only kept at 1-0 due to some fantastic saves by the keeper. The attack looks clueless and the only spark seems to be Son Heungmin. And on top of that, they're in a difficult group.

All that said, the Korean fighting spirit is awesome!

  • +2

I want them to bring back the $5 (then down to $2) Coke soccer ball promo.

    • Memories. I still have balls unopened/sealed in plastic from this deal.

      • +1

I bought about 50 balls and gave away about 45 (son's birthday party instead of a lolly bag, then family), then my son lost the other 5 at school. I should have bought 100!

  • So you need to install the SBS app do you to watch?

  • -5

SBS didn't stream Sweden Vs Korea match.

    • +5

I must have just imagined watching it on tv then

      • -1

Korea won the game; solid performance by Son

  • -1

    I love sportsball

  • Does anyone else find the quality on the Xbox app not as good as SBS HD?

  • +1

Something about free market blah blah. Apparently free enterprise is good for all of us as they run things more efficiently (by skimping out wherever possible to maximise profit).

  • +11

The World Cup should be free to air to the public as it is all around the world. Make no mistake, you're being ripped off.
If you pay for a VPN, you can watch ALL games live on BBC or ITV with top presenters and commentary.
Alternatively, you can watch ANY match delayed (full match, highlights or BBC match of the day) for free at any of these websites:
    http://www.footballorgin.com/
    http://www.fullmatchesandshows.com/
    http://footballfullmatch.com/

There are plenty more options out there (Google is your best friend).

    • Agree with you Aussies being ripped off big time except this time is done by the governament.

Thanks for the links shared. Didn't know you can watch without VPN.

  • +1

Who would have thought a high publicity, high demand event being streamed online would have problems? Like every click frenzy type event ever.

Maybe Optus didn't realise just how many of the vocal "soccer" bashing AFL, League and cricket devotees secretly love the world game and know its a better sport. I imagine them staring blankly at the screen in awe of all these countries they have never heard of before.

Now they have done this they simply cannot afford to take it back off SBS unless it is working seamlessly, which I suspect won't happen. It will be a PR disaster (even more than it already is) if they deny people the opportunity to watch games from here on.

    • +1

I hope SBS does the rest of the games. Optus can get their refund back from SBS we don't really care. We just wanna watch

Optus should also refund to all customers

  • Now we need them to look into their poor mobile coverage and customer service!

  • God bless SBS
