Who are you giving it to?

          • @mwahahaha: I think he means he's going to fart it out like one passes gas

  • +4

Cant wait for the enhanced games in the US next year.

  • -1

No Australian team. Is the A League dead? I mean Brisbane Roar was never popular but I've literally heard nothing about them for years. Same with the Reds with Union. Feels like soccer and Rugby Union are dead here in QLD at least.

    • +4

      lol stick to league

      • +9

Was a big league fan 90s - early 2010s. But the players are just thugs now and can't stand watching any more.

        • -6

So you watched it when there were regular brawls & attempts to actually hurt players & they've taken most of that out of the game and now their thugs? ok, interesting.

          • +7

@M00Cow: I’m taking about off field behaviour. At least with QLD players. Obviously the likes of the Johns brother weren't role model material.

            • +2

@PainToad: Ah they just get more coverage these days. Many of the players were horrific sex pests & thugs off the field, but there wasn't the ubiquitous availability of phone camera at the time. The cops, media, etc turned a blind eye because they were footy players.

Although you're right in part of the problem is you've got young men with way too much money, fame and time on their hands these days.

A few years ago I knew a Storm player who lived nearby. I asked him what he gets up to outside training "Not much, we're banned from going out and socialising, so most of us stay at home playing xbox games with each other". I said, but no one recognises you around here. "Yeah, but there's always someone with a phone ready to film".

              • @M00Cow: but wasnt that during covid then? doubt they dont let them going out and socialise now. And being filmed is only bad if they were doing something wrong no? If they were being normal, I dont see why being filmed would matter

    • +9

I'm no fan of the A-League, but the reason you haven't heard of it is so obviously due to the commercial channels who have a vested interest in making sure that is exactly the case. As always soccer never gets any media coverage in Australia unless they can bash the fans somehow. Literally won't even see the grand final (which was recent) mentioned whatsoever on commercial TV since they will only ever cover AFL/NRL for very obvious reasons.

      • -5

I don't agree. For a while there it felt like I was continually hearing about the Roar. Really dropped off since maybe COVID.

      • Actually it's like Rugby and they've hidden most of it behind paywalls.

A-league isn't on Murdoch or Nine media, so it's not in their interest to give it much coverage.
But then again, who reads newspapers these days apart from old farts like me, politicians or people in radio/tv newsrooms? If you like soccer you'll find all the news you want & more in this wonderful thing called the internet.

    • Teams from only 20 countries are present at the Club World Cup.
Seems a bit of an entitled statement saying that there's no Aus team present.
Simply put, no Aus club team was one of the 4 best* in the Asian confederation (*best according to the qualification process)

    • The A-league champion competes in Asian club championships. Winners of that each year (and one extra spot) get through to FIBA club world cup.

      • +4

LOL, soccer champions go through to basketball world cup.

    • The Roar is in a bit of a sad state, Indonesian trophy owners who are underinvesting in the team. Know a player who has just been released and they were training down in Slacks Creek rather than the new modern facilities at Brendale. Qld Reds had a decent season it's just not as well publicised (Les Kiss coach is becoming Wallabies coach) just AFL & NRL are getting all the media coverage & support.

      • I think it’s unreasonable to say the Bakries are “underinvesting”, I’d make the argument they aren’t investing anything at all. As for training facilities, I think over the last 2 or 3 years they’ve trained at about 5 or 6 different locations including school playing fields and even the Gold Coast at one point. Club is an absolute basket case from top to bottom with minimal signs of improvement.

        • yeah fair point, really sad the player I know was promised a lot & nothing was delivered, think he regrets the move, some interesting inside stories…… absolute shitshow

    • The governing body who run football in Australia are pretty useless. You will never see a banner/commercial before A-League starts. Compare that with Big Bash/AFL and you will get the picture

Auckland City are there representing the A-league

Lost to Bayern Munich 10-0 in their first match

They play Benfica next early on Saturday morning

      • +6

Incorrect. Auckland City compete in the NZ league and are amateurs but won the Oceania Champions League.

Auckland FC are in the Aleague and will never be in the CWC because theyll never play in the Asian Champions League

        • +1

Thats weird. Why can't Auckland fc play in the Asian champions league? Are they caught in limbo because their national football federation is in Oceania but they play in an asian football league? Seems odd.

          • +2

@salc: No because they will never win the Afc Champions Legaue to go on to the Club World Cup.

            • @TheBardsTale: Never say never. But it probably is never haha

      • +5

Auckland City are representing as champions of Oceania (Fiji, Solomon Islands etc.), which has no professional teams. There are no A-League teams in the tournament as none made it far enough in the Asian Champions League.

They did well to only conceed 10 considering Bayern fielded a strong lineup and some Auckland players weren't able to attend the tournament as they couldn't get time off work!

    • Brisbane Roar was never popular

They still maintain an average home ground attendance >10k despite the decline of the A-League. Those stats exclude finals too, namely the 3 times they packed out 52k seats in Lang Park to win championships. Not bad considering how the league went to absolute shit after David Gallop completely killed active support & the blossoming terrace culture the league enjoyed.

I stopped supporting when they moved the games to Redcliffe, that and the fan groups on social media are absolute garbage. Still, Orange Sunday 1.0 was one of the best things I've ever seen.

      • If you look season by season, the roar haven’t had a 10k average since the 16/17 season, I think that’s long enough ago to say they don’t average 10k. I’m similar to you, I gave up years ago, think the last game I went to was when we beat the wanderers on penalties in the finals probably around 2017/18ish. It’s a sad state of affairs with what’s happened but unless the Bakries are forced out nothing will change, and the league itself has no money to do anything about it either.

        • I don't blame them, they saw long before anyone else that overcapitalising wasn't a wise investment, so they've funded it as much as they had to. Completely stifling the emerging vibrancy in the supporter groups and removing any atmosphere from matches in the mindless & futile quest to ensure a "family friendly" experience was the death knell. Casual fans had even less reason to turn up and pay their money, not that you'd expect some f**kwit in a suit like Gallop who'd never set foot outside of a corporate box to understand what ordinary citizens really want.

        • -4

          beat the wanderers on penalties

I swear every time I hear about soccer it’s that a game ended with a penalty shootout. Why even play the actual game.

          • @PainToad: I won't give you the dignity of an actual response because I don't think you'd have the brain capacity to understand it.

            • -1

@EFC94: lol soccer fan living up to their reputation.

It's free to watch live and to watch the three minute highlights, but you need the $30 premium sub to watch the full replay, however, the full replays are available on Binge for $5 a month:

With a $1bn (USD) Prize Pool - Australia should return to the OFC the group stage prize money alone makes it worth going back

  • When I try to go to the website it literally says

This is essentially the Super League isn't it? They've turned the Champions League into the Super League too with the new league table format.

The fat cats at FIFA and UEFA are a bunch of thugs, killing all other competitor organisations and then stealing their ideas and profiting off it.

  • +3

No interest in FIFA greed. Players should be resting
