Please Help Me to Find a Quiet Clock

G'day all.

This has been my long term battle: Have been buying wall clocks for many years now. Just something simple, has proper clear hands: hour and minutes; not digital. Something to hang on our walls: lounge, kitchen, TV room. I lost count of the number we went thru. All I ask for is for it to be quiet, especially in the bedroom and office. Some of them start of good, then after a few weeks or months, makes that tick-tick sound which drives me up the wall! What's funny is there's a couple I used for a few weeks, and thought it's safe to move to bedrooms, only to find that the start ticking again!

Been to a couple watch shops and spoke to the guys. Got some nonchalant responses. Looks like nobody would sign their names for a quiet clock.

Hubby is keen to install a digital clock so I am now madly trying to find one traditional one. Can someone help me please?

BTW, I did googled but it returns with some obscure websites and I was hoping I can get some references from this wonderful community!

Are you sure the clock is the issue here??

    • +3

Yes, statistics show that 72% of couples who have an analogue/digital disagreement split up.

But then 86% of statistics are made up on the spot. :)

There are quartz movements available that claim a sweeping motion thereby eliminating a large part of that ticking that's driving you up the wall. They're not completely silent, but nigh imperceptible unless you hold it up to your ear.

They're not expensive although if you go for a seiko movement, they can be priced significantly more. eg. I bought one to repair a clock in 2015 - it cost me $1.80. Genuine Seiko movements will go for $15-20.

My mother-in-law who is the one sensitive to the ticking found the replacement perfect and she's had no complaints since then.

You're looking for a 'continuous sweep' clock.

The difference is the hands move smoothly; the seconds hand won't 'jump' and so doesn't tick. You may get a motor noise instead though.

I think it would be very hard to find a clock thats mechanical and won't make any noise.

Some might be harder to hear then others, but there will always be some level of noise.

Go a digital clock with a analog display if thats the look your after.

For the record, I 100% understand the annoyance of a ticking clock!

You can buy silent mechanisms on eBay to replace the noisy ones in your existing clocks.

Alternatively search silent clock on eBay, there's heaps.

Can't comment on whether they're truly silent for bedroom usage though.
Simple solution there is to go electronic, then you can see it in the dark!

I purchased this one from eBay a few weeks ago, for $15 delivered:

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Silent-Round-Wall-Mountable-Quar…

    It's (still) silent.

Buyers regret: I should have purchased the one with the black surround. Same seller, same price.

Letting the tick annoy you is the problem. I lived with a big grandfather clock for years. The tick noise was never annoying, the chiming was however a bit harsh and it got disconnected. I like to hear the grandfather clock ticking, thinking of the second hand moving each tick and the great big pendulum swaying from side to side. When it stops it is more noticeable and reminds you to wind it up. Now when I visit it is part reminding me of the good times.

If you enjoy the sight of an analogue clock, learn to live with the ticking. Think of it as a relaxing noise and your troubles will go. Continue to try to find a quiet one and you’ll always be annoyed by the ticking.

    1. Buy the clock of your choice or use one of the clocks you already have/like.
    2. Replace the movement with one of these(a sweeping movement similar to the ones other posters have suggested): https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=q…

What about a 'projection clock'? (But probably not a good idea for bed room.)

    Like this one: https://www.dadshop.com.au/led-analogue-projection-clock

https://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/90357873/ Ikea have a few. I've only had ours for a few months but it's still quiet

Just wrap the clock in a doona until you need to tell the time, then put on ear muffs for the unwrapping?

I hate the tick tock of clocks.

I bought a $2.49 Stoma clock from Ikea - no ticking

    very smooth movement.

    • Do you know if it works well with eneloops? I only have Nimh batteries, but I've found some clocks don't like the lower voltage.

Can confirm, works well with Eneloops as well as Ikea Ladda batteries - you can pick up more Ladda batteries at Ikea at the same time. Excellent value AA 2450mAh. Some say the Ladda are just repackaged Eneloop Pros.

I have the same issue with clocks but got Muji clock which solved the issue. Pricey but I’m more than happy to pay for the sanity.

  • Wow, lots of good suggestions here, and new knowledge.
    Thanks so much for sharing.
Will definitely look at each of the ideas, and get rid of all the noisy clocks in our home.

Have you tried meditation? I find whenever I consistently meditate, the smallest things that used to really piss me off (such as clocks ticking) cease to do so.

  • You should look for clock with smooth second hand, I know Casio has some models with smooth second hand. And here is one on sale.

And the Ikea Nuffra suggested by mintysaurus also silent.

I think they're after a new clock, not second hand.. :D

I have been using Ikea Stomma Wall clock since Mar 2018. Until now no tick sound.

You should try it out. Cheap and good.

@O O and @m40000 - Many thanks for sharing. Who would have thought, good old Ikea!
Will check them out next weekend.
    Cheers,

  • What clock did you end up getting, Pumpkin? Are you still happy with it?

    • Thanks for the reminder @pjetson. (Does @ work here?)
      I have been so overwhelmed with this and have left it in my too-hard basket;
Going to Ikea is too cumbersome, buying off eBay needs a handyman to fix it, buying a new one requires more research
So I just keep rotating all my clocks LOL. Some end up in drawers, shed, office….

Sigh, this should be my new year resolution.
For now, Antihistamineis the cure; they put me to sleep quickly!
