  • I think you might mean the C8 not the B7 model. That is not a good price for a B7.

  • This is one of the best prices I've seen for the C8. The B7 was posted this week for $1836 but I feel like stock levels for that series will be dwindling.

Very tempted ugh. The difference in models seems negligible

    • 120 fps video and better image processing seems to be the key differences (alongside Google Assistant).

If you want HDMI 2.1 (i.e. a way to actually hook up any 4k/120fps device), you may have to wait for next year's model.

      • All comparisons I've seen of the image processing are negligible (but slightly noticeable when side-by-side). 120fps is indeed only via streamed sources so again a possibly moot point. Guess it all depends on whether that's worth an extra $800

C8 does get black frame insertion, which makes low-framerate sources (especially 24fps movies, but also progressive-scan 25fps PAL content) look less stuttery.

LCD's don't suffer it so badly because they smear motion with their slow response times, and plasmas didn't suffer it because their sub-field refresh pattern inherently fades to black between frames.

On a B7/C7, every 24fps frame is shown for exactly 1/24th of a second, then virtually instantly (<0.1ms) changes to the next frame. With no smearing, this can look jarring.

On a C8 with black frame insertion, each frame is shown for 1/48th of a second, then a black frame for 1/48th, then the next frame. This mimics the way film is projected and looks significantly more natural.

Is it worth paying $800 for? Depends how pick you are, I guess. Could they have implemented this in a firmware update for a C7? Most likely, but they didn't.

It's enough that I'm waiting for the C8's to get cheaper rather than jumping on a late B7, as I find stutter quite objectionable and I mostly use the TV for movies.

EDIT: Actually, I'm not sure how BFI works with 24p sources on the LG models - with 60fps content it's black every second frame, but for 24fps content it might be 4 120Hz frames on, 1 120Hz frame off. Same effect either way, just less change in peak brightness if BFI only inserts a 1/120th black frame rather than a 1/48th.

        • @ReverseBias: Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

        • @ReverseBias: completely forgot about BFI - cheers! It's almost worth the extra $800.

  • what a beautiful TV!
