Qantas is having a sale to South America, flying out from most major east coast airports for just over a grand.

Santiago, Chile is the destination - a hub for flights / bus rides around South America, including 20 hours north by bus to San Pedro de Atacama and the starting point for Salar de Uyuni tours, and 8 hours east to Mendoza, Argentina - wine country made famous for its Malbec.

Various dates throughout spring and summer, excluding it seems, the busy Christmas/New Year period.

  • That’s cheap and with Qantas

  • I'd really love a 1 way from Santiago to Sydney but they are more expensive than returns.

If you book a return but don't use the outgoing flight, are you allowed to make the return?

    • sadly no. AFAIK all carriers have their terms of carriage saying that if you fail to board any leg of your journey, all remaining legs are forfeited.

  • FYI: Visa fee flying into Santiago is $117USD for Australians.

Might be better off flying into Buenos Aires if you're going for SA trip.

    • When I flew into BA there was a visa fee for Aussies too? (This was 2010)
