No, you need to buy 'not a Holden' but like a Holden, it's really quite simple :P

    • +24

No they are saying they'll pay you $500 to buy a competitors vehicle.

    • +2

The deal is that if you test drive a holden, but buy a comparable competitors car within 30 days, they will give you a $500 visa card.

Nothing says you couldn't have made up your mind before ever test driving the Holden.

      • any TnC on "comparable" ?

        • +1

Ford had a similar deal a few years ago. I know 2 people who applied to get the money for test-driving Ford, and buying elsewhere. Both were denied, with Ford pointing to the T&Cs. The way they worded some things was very vague.

      • +11

The deal is that if you test drive a holden, but buy a comparable competitors car within 30 days, they will give you a $500 visa card.

But if you buy a Holden, you get nothing..,

        You’re just a loser?

  • +1

    Where are Holden made now?

    • +7

All over the place. I think the Barina is really a Daewoo (South Korea), the new 'Commodore' (Sad days) is a German Opel etc.

      • +7

Man I don't know why everyone is nostalgic for the old Commodore. New one looks far better than any recent Commo, and I'll bet it drives better and is more comfortable and better equipped as well.

        • +3

RWD, big back seat and V8 (With huge amounts of tuning parts to make them ridiculously quick for the money).

..That said, I would never have bought one new.

        • -1

          @Merlict: Mustang?

        • @Hybroid:
I think they're hideous, though it's a lot of car for the money.

        • @Merlict: V8 schmee8 ya know? Nah I get it for that point, but they were never worth the money and weren't that good of a car. The only reason you'd buy one is if you were a cashed up bogan.

    • Holden only make stickers now.

  • +14

Not really a bargain. Marketing trickery.

    • +7

Test drive a astra, buy a corolla, easy $500 money and q better car

      • -1

Anything that wears a Holden badge ending in an 'a' is a POS.

      • +1

Like the previous similar ford offer, getting it is another thing.

      • Yeah it's a really bizarre offer. It's like "We will pay you to buy a different brand".

        • Not really… they'll enforce really high sales pressure and get 100 or more extra sales across the nation - will win compared to the <100 $500 claims they'll actually pay out.

        • It does force people to visit a Holden dealer and actually test out one of their cars, pushing their cars into your mind for consideration.

  • +11

A similar car to Holden… who else makes bogan mobiles?

    • +3

      Ford

    • +5

      Wrx comes to mind…

      • Is the WRX a bogan car? I thought otherwise…

  • +2

Where can I buy a new V8 sedan?

    • Let's see.
      Chrysler 300, hideous brick.
BMW and Merc sedans, lovely but cost a damn fortune
Mustang has a kind of useable back seat?

Guess they really were the last of the V8s, at least for mere mortals.

  • +31

Holdens are so confused now that they will literally pay you to buy other cars.
So EVERY non-Holden new car buyer drop in and picks up a free $500.
    They have lost their minds
I will give them less than two years to completely collapse

    • -2

Well, it's a subsidiary of General Motors, and given GM survived the 2009 bankruptcy I don't think Holden is going to "completely collapse" any time soon.

      • +30

GM was bailed out by the US government. They didn't survive anything, they got their butts saved.

        • Agree, but if anything in the current political climate a bailout for Detroit seems even more likely than back then.

      • +12

The new Commodore has been a total failure. In fact their entire post Australian manufacturing sales performance is a write off. I think GM will kill them off

        • Sure, but there's still clearly some value in the brand - enough people will buy cars with a Holden logo without appreciating the decline in quality, such that it should continue to be profitable for GM to slap Holden logos on other models from their range and import them into Australia.

        • @josho9:
They have very few suitable right hand drive models and rapidly declining sales cannot justify the development costs. They fell out of the top 10 marque sales a few months back. They used to be in the top three all their life, Opel has been sold to peugeot now - so even less models to choose from. think 'death spiral'

        • Regardless of Australian and European manufactured GM vehicles, have you seen GM's line up of cars?
GM have a plethora of vehicles easily and/or already adapted to RHD. The only thing we've lost is a home grown large car.
GM will continue to market all Asian imported vehicles under the Holden banner, but will use Chevrolet on their Americas counterparts.
(They wont use Buick - It's in the same boat as Holden, but there's a chance they'll use the Cadi name here too.)

Ps. Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with your thoughts on the Holden brand!
Apart from the (now gone) VF, there's not another vehicle in their current range I would even consider buying. (Hence, we also own 2 Kias purchased in the past few years.)

    • +2

Agree. This company is literally a disaster in motion. I have watched GM (and Ford) in the US behave insanely for decades, but seeing it spreading here is so disappointing.

    • Yep, lost the plot

    • +1

They need people to visit its showroom, $500 at having a chance to sell a car is still cheaper than the $1500 per vehicle they are burning now and better odds to sell, but yeah holden are trash, deserve what has happened to them

  • +6

Here's a cheatsheet to help you guys find a similar model to their Holden equivalent:

All Holden models = Eureka lemons or Meyer lemons.

    Done! Easy as that!

As an ex-Holden owner, stay well clear of this joke of a company!

    • My FJ Holden is still going strong.

      • +1

My J.A. Holden & Co saddle is still going strong too.

      • +7

My JV Holden is annoying as hell…

  • +1

Who still buy a Holden? Pay me 50k, I might consider it.

  • +4

    https://www.holden.com.au/resources/media/documents/test-dri…

Might be useful for identifying what vehicle segment you are after.

    • Man they are paying to find out all those details!

"h. Details of Holden Test Drive must be recorded at the Holden Dealer and match the customer details on the contract of sale and registration documents for verification purposes."

    • +5

Has to be purchased and delivered within the 30 days, gotta watch out for that one if you plan to pick up an in demand car.

    • +6

have to admit it's a good deal for most people looking to buy a car.

    • +1

      Yes boss..!

  • Does this offer work in retrospect? I have bought many non-Holdens…

    • The T&C implies it does.

"test drive it within 30 days of buying your new car"

      • I was thinking years :)

      • "Within" doesn't really specify before or after though..

  • +1

Oh goody goody, less new Shitboxes Daewoos and Opels on the road, and $500 better off in the pocket!

Spackbace must be so happy he doesn't sell this crap anymore.

    • +3

Kinda happy I got out at the right time! Well, shoulda got out a year before I did but still, the VF was a damn good car! Just grabbed a used VF Calais V V8 to drive over the weekend coz they're so nice

  • +8

Those poor salespeople. Though it goes to show how bad their enquiry level is now.

Holden has a big image problem right now… Are you Chevrolet? Opel? What are you?!

And as an ex-Holden salesperson, the 'Commodore' should've been called the insignia imo, but they knew the name wouldn't get them far I reckon.

  • Suzuki did the same when they launched Kizashi.

    • And look how well that went for them! /s

Though the kizashi was an awesome car except a) the name, no one could say it, and b) the cvt/engine combo. That car with a turbo engine and standard 6-speed box would've been nice. It was comfy, looked good and had really good fit n finish.

  • +6

Don't buy a Holden. after recent experience with our new car having a serious fault, Holden customer care basically called us liars and told us to take our case to small claims court. I seriously don't recommend anyone buy one of their pieces of crap cars. I never will again.

    • Don't buy a Holden.

      That's kinda the point

      • What model Holden did you have problems with ….

        Thanks

  • +5

The whole Holden marketing department should be hanged.

To insult traditional Commodore fans intelligence with this new Commodore junk is nonsense. At least Ford retired the Falcon name badge.

As for their target market it is bogans and blue collar workers not latte sipping hipsters.

As for Holden's recent virtue signalling campaigns — Who cares people buy cars based on performance, price and features.

Australians vote at elections when it comes to political matters. Pity there are so many w*nkers in corporate Australia obsessed with pushing ideologies instead of just offering good pricing, quality and customer service.

  • +1

While I understand how this promotion works mechanically, I just can't comprehend what was going through the minds of the people that came up with this "promotion". I mean you are incentivising people to not buy your car after test driving it…

    • They're trying to get bums in seats of the brand, apparently so confident that you'll end up buying the Holden over the competition just because you drove it, when you wouldn't have otherwise

      • "Confident"… or desperate. They'd rather risk giving out cash to entice people to just take test drives apparently.

  • +2

Thanks Holden, just made my Ford Ranger $500 cheaper!

  • +1

    h. Details of Holden Test Drive must be recorded at the Holden Dealer

All claims will be verified with the Holden Dealership where the test drive was
    undertaken.

Hmm I can see some details getting 'lost' out of spite

    • Yeah - I'd follow the T&Cs to the absolute letter, get copies of everything handed over, make my own records, and basically expect to be rejected a few times.

  • Going to grab a Jazz very soon for the misses.. what is the Holden equivalent these days a Spark or Barina?

  • +2

I wonder how many 'That's not a comparable competitor car you bought' or 'Your test driving records are not in our system' they use..

Holden is literally saying - let me give you $500 towards your next car as long as it's not a Holden!

  • What's the holden equivalent for a v6 stinger

    • +2

At (4830mmx1870mm) ~9032m it's just classed as Passenger Large (9,001-9,500), which means it's up against the Commodore ZB.

  • What is the equivalent of a Forester?

    • +2

At (4610mmx1795mm) ~8248m it's classed as SUV Medium (8,101-8,800), which means it's up against the Equinox.

      • Damn, beeawwb - for someone who negged the deal you're doing the Lord's work.

        • It’s the vibe, and… no, that’s it… it’s the vibe.

  • +7

I will neg this but gladly remove it if someone, just one person, gets the $500.

  • +2

For anyone contemplating actually buying a Holden read this first https://autoexpert.com.au/posts/holden-dont-buy-warning-for-…

    • Well now they have 500 more reasons not to buy a Holden…

  • +3

Me: "So do you have any incentives for me to buy this vehicle?"
Sales Person: "No, but I do have one if you buy another car like ours elsewhere".
Me: "Great, I'll come back when I have bought another car".

  • +2

Go in there for the test drive, with a Ford shirt, ford hat, ford keyring etc… Then mention the $500 deal if you buy the ford , after test driving holden :) Will be interesting how the sales pitch for the Holden goes

  • +1

Oh GM you really made a nice Coffin for the Holden name soon it will be gone from our shores like the jobs of all those Aussie workers. I understand they expected a backlash from buyers when they canned Australian manufacturing but I don't think they realised just how bad it would be. The rebadged daewoos and other crap your importing just won't cut it.

Less than 10 years I give them, likely much less than that.

  • +1

I was going to give this deal a (+) because hey, free money, but when doing my own research on how to apply it (I'm in the market for an SUV) that I realised Holden may not be able to follow their own terms and conditions.

In the T&C document they state that if you're comparing an "SUV Large" you need to test drive a Holden Captiva or Holden Trailblazer.

…Except that if we follow the Segmentation Criteria linked in the same T&C document then the Captiva is in the SUV Medium category (it's barely bigger than the Equinox, actually):
    Medium = 8,101 - 8,800
    Captiva = 4673mm x 1849mm = 8640377 rounds to 8640 = Medium.

The administration of this deal is going to be a nightmare, so for now I'm going to go with xywolap's philosophy. Show me it works and I'll gladly change my vote.

    • It would be much easier to negotiate more than $500 off at a dealer. This "deal" is a con.

      • +1

Counter-point in the words of my favourite commercial though… ¿Por qué no los dos?

      • Negotiate $500 off at the dealer, and claim your free $500 from Holden. There's no reason you can't do both.

The only negative I can see about this deal is Holden sales people dry humping your leg trying to get you to buy the car on the spot, so you can't claim the $500. I

  • -4

What would the Holden's equivalent b of a Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake, Ford Shelby GT500KR, 2001 BMW M3 GTR Street Version(preferably the one that looks and performs identical to the one in NFS MW or NFS C), 1974 Dodge Charger R/T, Dodge Challenger, Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, and Lamborghini Murciélago?

  • The logical thing to do would be for Holden to offer $500 if you test drive some OTHER manufacturer's car, and then come in and buy a Holden.

But, this is Holden we're talking about.

Don't feel guilty taking $500 off this company. They received billions of dollars in tax payer money over the years. Think of it as reclaiming your share.

  • Vf2 Commodore is a classic. Never owned one before as I always owned Europeans. Bought one in 2016 and hasn't depreciated at all. Super fast. Walkinshaw upgrade to 457kw and it is ridiculous. 5 year free servicing. Warranty period has been brilliant. Will garage it soon for the kids. The new Holden compared to the previous mentioned is just lame. Test the vf2 on this deal and it will be hard to leave. Beats the mustang everyday of the week.
