Wish they did an unlimited subscription for $20 or so, very few have the library or clout to pull it off (or the intention to - Google certainly can but isn't willing )

For people asking why, sometimes it gets hard to convince myself to get an audiobook that is short as it costs same one credit as a much larger book which will cover half of monthly commute

    • +2

Yep -I go for value too.

Found an awesome SF series of 80+ hours for one credit!

      https://www.audible.com.au/pd/Sci-Fi-Fantasy/Galaxy-Outlaws-…

Highly recommended if you like Firefly type SF - with Wizards included.

      • +1

Wow it has 4.9 rating too , definitely on my next list

Check out Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight archive, it is one of the best SF I've heard ( and longest too :D )

      • 85 hours of value and a mention of Firefly and wizards, sold.
Any other big value finds you have liked ?

        • +1

The Broken Eye series by Brent Weeks (20-30 hours per book)

West Cork (free podcast - very well done - 8 hours)

Brandon Sanderson as mentioned above - love his Mistborn series, but the Oathbringer ones are absolutely fantastic (~35+ hours each)

Political Order and Political Decay and the predecessor by Francis Fukuyama (22, 24 hours). You can then talk with gusto at dinner parties about your knowledge of the roots of the current geopolitical climate

Anything by Peter F Hamilton is 24+ hours and worthwhile

        • My SFF audibook experience so far ( all expressed below are my opinions, not absolute facts- before people start taking offence lol ) :

          Great
Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive and Mistborn 1-3 ( as above ) - Michael Kramer and Kate reading are a great narrative pair
Django Wexler's Shadow Campaigns - Beautiful stories with constant pace and thrilling
          Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastards ( book 3 is a mild letdown )
Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller chronicles ( book 2 is garbage compared to the brilliance of book 1 )

          Middle of the pack :

Brian McClellan's Powder mage trilogy ( not value for money and is a lot predictable and narration is in a hard Scottish-English mixed accent)
Rober Jordan and Sanderson's Wheel of time series ( very polarising series, I love the first 6 and last 3 by Brandon Sanderson are absolutely brilliant, rest are mediocre)

          Not impressed at all:

Peter V Brett's Demon Cycle - Book 1 was great , all others are just filler rubbish

Upcoming works I have downloaded on Audible :
          Farseer series - book 1-3

        • @tallmantim: I’ve never risked reading a Brent Week book since his cringey romance plots and terrible writing of female characters in his Night Angel trilogy.

        • +1

@kamban: I really loved Peter V Brett’s Warded Man. Still haven’t brought myself to read the Skull Throne and the Core yet. Think I should just wiki it to see how it ends

        • @cruizerdog: The Warded/Painted Man was really brilliant - especially the world building etc.. the next ones are a real drab- the follow ups were filled with new characters and their back stories for the sake of it. It should have been a trilogy and focused on main characters, instead it became a dragged out 5 part series :(

        • +1

          @kamban:
          For me

Best - Ender's Game. Great book made even better with talented readers.

Worst - The Ruin. Hopeless story telling. Red Herrings every second paragraph. Voice and accent that doesn't work in a car.

        • +1

Its not Sci-Fi, but by far the best audiobooks ive enjoyed are 'the Witcher' books, excellent story and narration. Head and shoulders above anything else ive read/listened to

Another awesome narration and story experience is 'the Dresden Files' = a wizard/detective in NYC. The books arent super-long, so not 'value' timewise, but quality wise it makes up for it.

        • +1

@Mr Mrrtn: I have a long list of good series like this. Will post together a list and post it later!

        • @Mr Mrrtn: I've read all the Dresden books , they are super fast and thrilling, awaiting book 16 Peace Talks for a couple of years now

And having played the amazing Witcher 3 game I've got a glimpse of the back story, is it very different to how the game portrays ( in case you have played it too )

        • @Baa: Be sure to tag those here too :)

        • +1

@kamban: yeah, im hooked to the series too :) Love the 'in between books' space of the video games

No idea where he's going to take it after Tower of Swallows though, things are getting so epic-power level with Siri, its all becoming a bit metaphysical!

        • @Mr Mrrtn: Great so the games focus in between the main story is it, I'd get it after current series then , love the way the Witcher world is set up and Ciri's characterisation too

        • @tshow: You can add Demon Cycle to the worst lsit too, the narration lacked necessary modulation and was not gripping at all after book 1

        • @Mr Mrrtn: I was debating about getting “red sister” by mark lawerence (love prince of thorns and the broken empire trilogy) but I’ve ended up giving the Witcher books a go. Starting with last wish

    • Do a search for "omnibus" or "trilogy".

    • You can refund any book for virtually no reason. I've been doing this for years now and keep the ones I love. I've probably bought 5 times more books because of this feature they have .It's a smart move by Amazon

  • +1

    Excellent, cheers OP

  • Creates a new account on audible.com.au, seemingly completely separate to my account with audible.com.

Pro: 3 more months for free.
    Con: No shared library.

    • +4

If you log into one account, download books, then logout and log into the other account, the downloaded books will remain.

      • Thanks for that! I have books in both AU and US accounts but had only downloaded the AU ones in the Audible app. Till now that is ;-)

    • You can switch between them anytime.

  • Can you get prime accounts free??

    • You can get trial Prime for 30 days

  • +1

Worth noting that after the free audible trial, when you cancel because $17 a book is a bit much, choose "Too expensive" under the reason for canceling, and they may offer to continue at half price for a couple of months.

(They do go back to full price after that though, so don't forget to cancel eventually unless you really do want to pay the $17 per month).

  • So can I just sign up to prime for 1 month (4.99) and then cancel and still get the 3 books?

    • I don't see why not.

  • +2

FYI - can confirm that the offer appears to be valid if (like me) you signed up to audible.com in the past, but not with audible.com.au

"This offer is open until 11:59 p.m. AEST on 31 July 2018. The offer is subject to availability and may also be withdrawn or amended without notice.
The offer is valid for new members of Audible in Australia and New Zealand only, who sign up for an Audible trial membership at www.amazon.com.au and who are Amazon Prime members at the time of signing up. You'll get a membership credit for 1 title/month for $0/month for the first 3 months (the “trial period”).
After the trial period, membership renews automatically for 1 title/month at the regular monthly price, currently $16.45/month. Cancel anytime.
The offer has no cash alternative.
Limit one per customer and account.
The offer is non-transferable and may not be resold.
Other terms and conditions apply, including Audible's Conditions of Use at http://www.audible.com.au/legal-terms/Conditions-of-Use?modu… and claim code terms and conditions at https://audible-au.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7015…. If you violate any of the terms or conditions, the promotion will be invalid, and the offer will not apply. This promotion may not be combined with other offers.
If your credit card is declined, the offer will not apply.
Terms prohibited by law shall be void without prejudice to the remaining terms."

Thanks OP. Not too bad as prime is free for the first month then $4.99 per month until Jan next year, and with that you also get a $10 amazon credit (that can be used on anything on amazon.com.au) the first time you stream a video - so basically you could get 3 months of audible, plus prime video etc and come out $10 ahead if you don't keep the prime membership. I'm actually thinking about forking out $59 for the year Prime membership. After allowing for the $10 amazon credit and three audio books, it's not actually costing that much…. and "Prime Day" is coming on the 16th, although no word yet as to what that might bring……

  • appears to be only audible australia, doesnt come up for the USA site

  • +1

Can somebody kindly explain to me the 'credit' system? I signed up successfully after opting to trial prime for 30 days and got the 3 month trial thing. But this isn't like spotify how you can just listen to unlimited books? I went and bought one book with "one credit" now every thing is showing up with prices when i browse? Whats the point of the 3 month trial when youre given only 1 credit? I'm clearly missing something

    • You get 1 credit per month, not all at once. So the next credit will come in 30 days

    • Audible is not all you can eat.. You only get 1 book per month.

  • +2

Awesome! Ready Player One narrated by Wil Wheaton is an excellent choice!

    Thanks OP!

    • +2

Much better than the movie was.

  • +1

If i go to my membership detail page, next bill date is shown as 9 August. Does that mean I only got 1 month trial?

What does your membership detail say?

    • I got this too and also only 1 credit. Doesn't seem right.

      • +2

Audible gives one credit per month. Next month you will get one and another after that.

        • Ah ok. I thought it might give 3 credits up front.

        • +1

But shouldn't next bill date be 9th October rather than 9th August?

        • @jsb:

So they will bill you 0 bucks and give you a credit.

    • Audible gives one credit per month. Next month you will get one and another after that.

  • If anyone enjoys sci fi and want something great I can recommend Old Man's War or Galaxy's Edge (1&2)

  • +5

After the 3 months, if you've developed a hankering for Audiobooks but can't afford it, go to your local library get a library card (with digital ID) and you'll likely be able to download and access their collections through RBDigital…

You can also sign up at multiple libraries to get access to different collections in the one app (eg, I've got Logan and Brisbane City library cards and both have quite different collections).

    • Thanks mate! had no idea

    • The RB collection in my library is quiet small, I've got Overdrive as well as part of nearby suburb library but the ollection is small - understandably so

But we have to commend them for having that option

    • Once you have the card, you could use Libby app for borrowing digital books from your local library as well

      • Is libby only usable if the library hosts its collection on there?

        • +1

Libby is just the app - it's all run through overdrive.

          https://www.overdrive.com/libraries

Search for your library there, it won't always be a suburb for the library, for me it was my city. If your library is there then you can sign up to overdrive, all you need is your library card # and a pin. Then you can rent audiobooks/ebooks/videos etc.

  • When subscribed to Audible….do you actually download the entire audio books to your PC / Device or is it streamed?

I would like to download the file as mp3 to keep if possible.

    • +1

Downloads into the Audible app on my device.

      • But can I have it in mp3 format to keep or enjoy whenever / on whatever device I choose?

        • +1

You can't download them as an MP3, no, but you can download them to your device in Audible's .aa/.aax format and enjoy them whenever without streaming.
Any books you've 'purchased' with credits stay available to you through Audible even after your subscription is expired.

        • @itsMartin:

Thank you…thats the information I was looking for.

Longing for the day when Kobo gives away free audiobooks again?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/358338

    • every 6 weeks or so I check the publisher hasn't accidentally done it again :) One can leave in hope

  • Yeah gonna wait for prime day before I sign up to this one. They've handed out $10 before in the US.

  • -1

here is a tip if you going to cancel post trial - make sure you cancel subscription on .com and .com.au site as the subscriptions are maintained seperately. Subscription to .com will become active if you buy a book via .com during the trial period.

  • Now which book is the best to use for 1 credit to EARN ME MONEY

  • +1

I don't know if I'm missing something, but it tries to bill me $16.45 when I go to sign up. I did just cancel my membership a month ago, so maybe that has something to do with it?

I'm a prime member, so I don't know what the deal is.

    • I'm having the same problem. I think it's only for new members unfortunately

      • I joined and was billed $16.45 charged from my CC. Called them and they immediately cancelled it and refunded the amount. Also asked me to go through the steps again from amazon and I got the free 3 months trial.

  • Just finished the 3 part series starting with "One Second After", loved it. Love Audible

  • Has anyone who's been a member of audible.com.au previously got this to work?

  • +2

If anyone is unsure what to choose for their first free audiobook, may I suggest Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Collection narrated by Stephen Fry. Four novels and five collections of short stories (72 hours worth) for one credit.

  • So… theoretically…. if someone had multiple accounts from a amazon $20 for new users deals. If someone gave these accounts a prime free trial and then activated 3 months free audible, do you think amazon would allow this?
