Description:
Swaps is a challenging word game where you must construct words from a set of random letters, in order to beat the set bar and progress to the next level. You can drag unwanted letters into the letter pile to "Swap" them for a new letter. The end goal is to beat your personal best high score (the highest bar you've reached).

FAQ:

Q: Why does it need wifi access?
A: It doesn't. Its a completely offline game. The toolset I used to create it annoyingly asks for the access even though it doesn't access the network at all. I cant figure out how to stop it from asking. The only permissions the game actually needs is write to memory as it stores your last position for when you close the app.

Q: My word isn't recognised - why?
A: I used a Scrabble dictionary so if its in Scrabble then it should be in Swaps. Its possible there's words missing - let me know the word and I'll review.

Q: Any plans for an iOS version?
A: I often get asked this :) I would like to, if the app gets bigger I'll take the plunge.

Q: Does it go past 6 letters?
A: Not unless you use the Qu tile to make a word (with all the tiles) and technically you'll make a 7 letter word. If you do you'll recieve a triple bonus.

Q: how is the letter selection done?
A: There are rare and there are common letters. The rarity of the letters is based on Scrabble letter distribution. It should be the same as if you were pulling random letters out of a bag of Scrabble tiles, you're going to get more vowels then Zs or Qu for example. The only difference is I've turned off getting the same tile twice in a row.

Q: what's the world high score?
A: 102: https://twitter.com/swaps_game/status/1033628576526921728

Thanks Ozbargain for your support - hope you enjoy the game!

    Cool, and thanks.

  • Thanks for sharing, and the FAQs. Do you know of a 9 letter word swap/letter unjumble game?

  • So it's……Scrabble?

    • Fair call. Swaps is a smaller/simpler game compared to Scrabble. Here's some other differences:

      • there's no board
      • single player - competing your own best score
      • you can accumulate Swap points to help later in the game
      • you can swap out letters anytime (as long as you have Swap points)
      • unlimited letters available
      • you can trade points to upgrade all letter values
      • its free
    • No. Scrabble has 7 letter tiles. Since it is using the Scrabble dictionary, I wonder why the author didn't go 7 tiles.

I'm not really sure. 6 just seemed like a nice even number at the time when I started working on it 4 years ago. It was one of those projects where it started as "I wonder if I can do this", and then grew to where it is now.

Good game. Played it before. Thanks

Gave it a go and I think I'll enjoy this one - I like the bit of strategy behind risking using several of your swaps to get a 6 letter word (and triple the score).

    • Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. :)

Thanks for the free game. I like word games and am looking forward to giving this a go. One thing that niggles me a little bit though. This is a game about spelling and you have spelled "their' wrong in the "How To Play" description. The section reads "6 letter words will earn double thier worth". ;)

LOL thank you :) will fix in the next update

Game is defective. Won't accept qwijibo as a word.

why does it ask for photos and media permissions

    • It does need to write save states to the phones memory so I presume that's why this permission is needed

  • Gave it a go. Got a score of 50. 'Ronin' and 'Jew' are not in the dictionary. It looks like they are not in the original Scrabble list but in subsequent versions. https://www.anagrammer.com/scrabble/jew

Is the swap a 1 in 26 chance or are there more chances of getting certain letters like the vowels?

    • 50 is an excellent score, nice work.

I was looking up Jew because I was curious why it wouldn't be in there because I'm pretty sure the creator of Scrabble is Jewish, and I found that someone complained once that Jew was a slur and it was removed:

Yes there are rare and there are common letters. The rarity of the letters is based on Scrabble letter distribution. It should be the same as if you were pulling random letters out of a bag of Scrabble tiles, you're going to get more vowels then Zs or Qu for example.

      • Thats a cool bit of trivia. Wow, I learnt something today. Actually, that is probably fair since my use of the word would mean it needs to have a capital J, so is not allowed in Scrabble.
Found more words but should have written them down. Mornay was one. I noticed that these extra words are in the other Scrabble dictionaries though.

        • Thanks I'll add those words. Glad you're enjoying the game :)
