Windows Update Broke my PC

Hi All, I need some support for Microsoft to know how bad is their automatic Windows 10 Update.

I spend 4 days working with their remote support team and they can’t fix my pc.

Problem: Memory error, profile error, black screen of death and etc.

Solution: Re-install your Windows. I wish you best of luck.

ive never had a single issue with any windows update ever.

    • +51

      ….since I switched to Linux.

        • +3

I've played Left 4 Dead on Xubuntu just fine. Frame rates are slightly better than Windows.

        • +1

@flaminglemon: Same with 7DaysToDie. And if you have an AMD card, you get a 40% performance boost running Cemu under wine, than if you used Windows.

        • +1

          @idonotknowwhy: O_O I didn't even know Cemu was a thing!

@daitro: And only 1 of the 7 games i just typed is available for linux.

I'll repeat Linux is shit for PC games.

        • @Axelstrife: With DXVK and Gallium 9, you can play most games on Linux. I haven't been blocked from playing anything yet.

I even play Halo 3 online with Linux lol

        • +2

Not sure why the downvotes, the man speaks the truth

    • +3

      So you're a Mac user or…?

      • +12

I wouldn't use a mac if you paid me, mainly for the simple reason they (profanity) suck for gaming.

        • +1

I was going to pay you $200… oh well, I'll look for a different sucker then :(

    • +8

I fix computers for a living.

Congratulations - you're not part of a small percentage that problems happen for. This is not helpful information for said small percentage.

      • +4

How do you expect me to be helpful when there was zero information given about the issue.
this is just a bitch post and nothing more.

And i said windows updates, ive had issues with my GPU drivers which is a simple fix Run DDU and reinstall the last drivers that worked correctly.

        • +1

Nobody is expecting you to be helpful, but what you posted is unhelpful, you're just boasting about how you haven't been unlucky like OP, congratulations you did nothing! and the very fact that people upvote useless comments like yours just shows how clueless people are.

One practical solution for OP is to turn off windows updates in the future(which is not straight forward)

        • +1

@abctoz: Your comment is no more helpful than mine.
Turning off updates isn't helpful at all due to the reason he already has a issue and disabling furture updates isn't useful in this situation.
Now uninstalling the lastest update's to cause the issue is a much more helpful response.

After a simple google here's some help with how to uninstall recent updates.

        • -3

          @Axelstrife:

Note I said turn off windows updates "in the future" - I don't know what OP's issue is but I know how to prevent it.

        • +1

@abctoz: Why are you so triggered? This whole post is pretty dumb. it’s hard to help someone who provides basically no info.

        • +1

          @snagseb:

My bad I misread OP's post, I thought he was asking for help… apologies and ignore my posts LOL

Triggered because I had win10 update break my windows before, microsoft help resources were completely useless, had to clean install, was a PITA

      • +4

This is not helpful information for said small percentage.

OP really started the trend of giving "not helpful information" though. Their post is basically "Windows broke my PC" - I hope they're giving better details to MS support, else no wonder they can't help either.

        • +7

its likely a PEBKAC or ID-10-T error.

    • +1

I've seen plenty. There are topics on https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/ to see what has been broken each month.

      • +1

Corporate/other networks have far more interdependent parts to break - that's not really representative of the average consumer.

That is no guarantee that you will not have issues in the future!

      Rich coming from you.

      • +7

I don't think anything coming from Savas can be classified as 'rich'….

(sorry - saw the chance and took it.)

        • Well… he is on OzBargain.

  • +2

Try reinstalling all your drivers from their manufacturers websites. Win 10 updates screw me over often. I think its because of custom parts. If your pc is old it may benefit from a bios flash.

    • +5

After fixing a particular driver for a device, block Windows doing a driver update for that device in the future.

Step 1 : Find device hardware ID

In Device Manager, right-click on the device, choose Properties, then in the Details tab set Property to Hardware Ids and copy the displayed id.

Step 2 : Install your driver

Disconnect the computer from the Internet, go again into Device Manager, uninstall the driver installed by Windows and install your own. Reboot, and ensure that the driver stays as installed

      Step 3:
      Run gpedit.msc
Go to Local Computer Policy → Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → System → Device Installation → Device Installation Restrictions
Double-click on "Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device IDs" and set it to Enabled.
Click the Show button to launch the dialog "Prevent installation of devices that match any of these Device IDs"
Paste into Value the copied hardware-id for the device
      Click OK until finished.

      • Very helpful info. This is most likely your problem.

Also it doesn't hurt to set up system restore for future issues.

    • +1

Just re Flashing the Bios - DON'T unless you pinpoint the problem to the motherboard and the Bios. The potential downside is that you brick the motherboard entirely.

      • Seconded. I did a bios update when my laptop helpfully told me there was one available. Nek minnit, laptop no work, had to send back to depot for service (new mobo lol, a bit overkill but it did fix the problem).

        • Ugh. No laptop should ever prompt you to flash the bios by default. That's just asking for trouble. And yeah - unfortunately replacing the mobo isn't actually overkill, it's the only fix. A bios update bricking the mobo is very much a hard bricking. Can't be saved unless the mobo has a dual-bios chip which is still uncommon.

        • @HighAndDry: Nah, nothing's physically damaged. 5 minutes* with an SPI adapter and you can load a fresh BIOS image… but hey, free new parts.

          * assuming there's a plug to connect to, or you have the custom pogo-pin rig they use in the factory

      • +1

and that's how cowboys roll baby !

  • have you tried creating installation media and booting from that device to do a clean install?

    • -2

Wouldnt you just system restore? Lol why would anyone reinstall for driver/windows bs. Just restore to a point it worked nd turn updates off for a month nd hopefully they fix it lol

  • +1

I had a similar experience once. With a update I would have frequent bsods.

The fix was a later windows update months later.

My advice, get win 10 Pro and use the group policy editor to never update.

    • Cool, got instructions for that?

      • You can disable the update process by opening Services.msc, finding Windows Update > properties > Startup type: and set it to disabled.

If you already have an update downloaded, you can stop it installing by doing the above then finding the download in Windows Explorer and deleting the files.

You will probably need to take ownership of the folder to delete it. I can't remember the path, but a quick google brought up "%windir%\softwaredistribution\download".

Permanently disabling updates isn't a good idea, but this allows you to choose when to install updates. My soul dies a little every time I use my windows 10 laptop :,(

        • Thanks. :)

        • Unlocker will let you delete almost any file without worrying about permissions. https://unlocker-x64.en.softonic.com
Its a right-click app like 7zip and cdemu

        • @stormii: Been using Unlocker for years, I believe it's from an old magazine cover disc.
However, sometimes it requires a restart for delete, rename or move operations. With a lot of M$ stuff, there's a shadow copy in some system reserved bit, and it just copies a duplicate back.
          Worth a shot though!

      • Google for gpedit and windows updates.

        Here's an example
        https://www.techrepublic.com/blog/the-enterprise-cloud/confi…

        Needs win10pro though

    • +13

      Bad advice alert

      • -6

Lol i use my pc to game, i turn off windows updates because i dont want them breaking it… You can manual install them if they are useful anyway, depending how tech savy the user is turning off can be good…

        • +5

No one whose level of IT literacy is "go ask OzBargain for IT support" is going to know how to manually update, or know which updates are important and essential and which ones aren't. Sure, the probability is low, but security updates are a thing, and crypto-malware is becoming worryingly more prevalent.

      • -2

I do eventually update. Only when i can afford the downtime.

Might be once a year maybe

        • +3

This is actually a terrible habit. And, in terms of general advice, not applicable without your level of knowledge about computers.

        • @HighAndDry:

          A valid point.

    • Or dont pay and just use this

if you actually list your problem maybe someone might be able to help you. Long shot - absolutely. But what have you got to loose?

Otherwise, what do you hope to achieve with this post? gain more followers to your page? and then what?

    • Loosely, "the dogs of war" perhaps.

    • if you actually list your problem maybe someone might be able to help you.

      This

What does your PC do when you turn it on?

      • Based on the post I can't tell if the OP can even turn on their pc after the update. The post is way to vague.

        • OP posted

I spend 4 days working with their remote support team and they can’t fix my pc.

So I would assume that the OP could not restore the original functionality pre update.

          Cheers

Have you tried turn it off and on again?

    • And did you back up all your photos and files?

  • +2

This thread will likely be deleted because of the facebook link BUT if you say what happened people might be able to assist. There are quite a few people (myself included) on here in the IT industry.

The first step would be to make a bootable USB and reinstall windows.

Mods: if you read this remove the fb link.

Update 1803 was a nightmare. Still trying to fix things at work and home from this update. Very frustrating.

  • Unroll the update. Never had an issue with windows update. Your drivers may be causing the BSOD so make sure they are supported by the current windows update version.
Edit: It's better to contact the manufacturer of the desktop or laptop. As they will have a better understanding of the situation. If it's a custom build then contact each part supplier and ask if they support the new update.

  • +19

Lolling at people claiming they've never had an issue.

  • with recently update form window 8 to 8.1

Before upgrade there is a selection - keep no data or only keeping personal data ( i do believe it means including the software I installed)
All the driver did not come with the upgrade.
No software come with the upgrade
Some software did not compatible with window 8.1

Lucky I recently did a HDD to SSD upgrade (Thanks to OZbargain with good deals), I just cone my 2 weeks ou of date HDD again.

    • did you just say windows 8…

add +2 and you will be fine

      • i think i need to upgrade to 8.1 then 10

        • You missed out on the free upgrades :(

        • +1

@apptrack: I put this together a while back, should allow you to upgrade to Windows 10 for free still, using the official Microsoft upgrade tool. It bypasses the date check then everything else runs normally.

I last tested it 3 months ago, if there's any issues let me know and I'll try to fix it up.

Also, as always, run a virus scan etc on any software downloaded from a stranger on the internet, or assume it's a virus and don't touch it, makes no difference to me.

        • @BradleyDS2: Nice man!

  • +4

    How's your fb page related?

  • +1

    ummm ok

  • I had a similar experience. Windows 10 update failed and went into a rollback failure.

I had to format the drive and re install windows 10, luckily had another computer to create a USB bootable install.

  • +2

Windows updates bricked one of my PCs. Gave up on Windows after that. Moved on to Chrome OS.

It wasn't just because of that one update. Ever since Win10 had their mandatory updates with no control over anything, I started getting fed up with it.

    • Why not just go back to Windows 7? It's still fully supported and there's no W10-like issues with it.

      • It's one of those mini PCs that won't even let me get into the BIOS. Can't even boot a live USB.

  • +1

    O boy I feel your pain :(
Every time I switch on my laptop I have to go to task manager and close Windows optimiser 2-6 times to stop it downloading updates. I've done my research in the past and tried all available methods I could find to stop it updating. 6 months on and I'm still doing it. My laptop confige fks up when it updates to the latest version as Windows doesn't support my gpu which makes games flash. I've got all the latest drivers too. The annoying part is when Windows keeps forcing me to update and a pop up reminder says we have updates ready to install and you select from restart now, wait an hour or select a time within 24 hours… If you leave the laptop alone and you don't select an option it will automatically start installing.

I am in the market for a new computer and saw this XD any suggestions would be apprciated - range $1k-2k either desktop or laptop. Can't be dell and has to be 15 inch+. Prefer no touch screens.

  • +4

Broke it in what way? No one will be able to help you without any actual information.

  • Use media creation tool to create your own installation media with either a USB flash drive or a DVD.

The main PC at work also got screwed by a windows update. Spent several days in total with MS support - they cannot help or rather are not willing to help by disabling the updates.
If MS does not enable that function soon, all PCs will be reset to Windows 7.
I wish someone could figure out where Windows downloads the updates from so that that address could be blocked by a third party firewall.

    • Did you know that by default, Windows 10 has a Peer-to-Peer update delivery system turned on? Talk about security vulnerabilities….

  • Sums up windows, still got windows 8.1 on my pc. It works why try to fix something when it ain't broke

But no-can-do, I had Links golf but no more. Just a handful now and lotsa demos and ST modules.

      Security updates.

      • W7 and W8 still get the security updates too, but it doesn't brick those OS's.
