FREE YouVersion NIV 2010 Bible Offline on iPhone/iPad/iPod and Android

960

From the website:

2011 marks the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible. To commemorate this milestone achievement, which made the Bible available in the common language of the people, throughout 2011, YouVersion will roll out events and opportunities that will help you more easily access, engage and share the Bible. The first of these events is that Bible App™ users will be able to download the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible. Made possible through a special partnership with Biblica and Zondervan, this offer will only be available for a limited time.

Beginning THIS SATURDAY, February 12, at 8:00 PM U.S. Eastern Time (GMT-5), and lasting for 400 hours, you’ll be able to download the NIV to your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Android device. When you download the NIV, that means you’ll be able to read it even when you can’t connect to your service provider or to the Internet. This special promotion will end on March 1, at 12:00 PM noon U.S. Eastern Time (GMT-5).

In Sydney time, the deal would start Sunday 13th Feb at 12pm, and end on Wednesday 2nd March at 4am.

Please do not shoot down this deal just because you do not agree with the Bible.

I think you need to put bible in the title(Bold). LOL!

    Praise be to jebus :-P!

  • +1

The fact they they are not selling (money-wise) Bibles is a good thing…

    • +4

The problem is is that the KJV is not under copyright, so anyone can print it without royalties… the NIV version, however, is owned by Zondervan, a subsidiary of News Corporation & Rupert Murdoch insists on payments for its use - so in a case like this this company really is giving away something that cost them money to purchase.

      • +3

        ZOLTAN!

  • +3

    KJV = win
    NIV = lame

      • +5

Let's not start a flame war here, shall we?
Hope I'm not feeding the trolls.

        • many apologies. it was a joke, and a lame one at that. i think "religious attack" is a bit far fetched though.

    • +6

Why NIV is more popular is still beyond me. Zondervan is part of News Corp and it has rather strict restriction on distribution.

On the other hand, ESV (English Standard Bible) published by Crossway/Good News Publisher has more literal translation, more recent, in many ways better, and have free distribution for many software platforms including YouVersion (and open source SWORD project, e-Sword on Windows, etc etc).

I am still voting +1 here though because I still occasionally need the NIV.

      • +3

The ESV isn't free either — although it does seem that it's easier to get a free licence to use it, given that there do exist free versions out there.

The NIV is easier to read, where the ESV is more literal. Which is better depends on what you want to use it for. If you really want literal, you can (as someone else suggested) learn Koine Greek and Biblical Hebrew and go for it.

The NIV seems to be the most widely-used English translation nowadays. This is the first time I've seen it free. I think that's a bargain. And I'm certainly going to be downloading it :-)

    • +1

How is ironpaw's comment relevant to consider if this a bargain or not?

  • -3

Warning - the NIV contains many omissions and outright errors when compared to the KJV AV 1611, if you care about your eternal security don't risk being misled by Newscorp and the happy clappy movement which endorse this failure of a translation.

    • +6

Are you telling me I'm going to hell if I download this???????????

    • +2

I am pretty sure omission is not caused by Newscorp and Zondervan. Google the analysis on textus receptus.

    • +18

Can't understand why people want to start a flame war on KJV vs. the rest.
Within the first 10 comments there are already 2.

Unless you read the Bible in its original Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic, then every Bible translation in whatever version, in whatever language will still have omissions and errors.

And comments like these just give more ammo for the OzBargain (and worldwide) community to poke fun at the Bible.

  • +6

This is a great deal - it is VERY hard to find a free NIV offline bible available (I still haven't found one for the last 5 years or so), exactly because of adam's comment about the need to pay for royalties.

  • -6

Until this bargain is available, it shouldn't be posted here…

    • +2

it will be, would you have said that to the logitech one???

      • pwned.

JV the stickler for rules, rules, rules.

    • Same with Aldi deals etc etc

    • +1

JV this rule applies to Group buy deals, not "regular" deals

"Group buy sites such as Jumponit & Scoopon sell their items after reaching a certain number of people who agree to buy their items.

Only deals that are active are allowed to be posted on Ozbargain. A deal is considered active when a user goes to purchase the deal and their sale is immediately finalised. A deal is inactive when a site requires X amount of people for the purchase to go through and that number hasn't been reached. (e.g. 35 bought, 65 more required to get the deal)…."

      • Maybe if the deals had a "FROM date", they could be filtered so that only current deals can be viewed if desired…

  • +3

400 Hours - sounds like something from Gerry Harvey…..

    • +4

      I can imagine the ad… "We've got fridges, couches, beds, bibles…." !!

      • +5

Wait until his newspaper campaign requesting government to charge 10% GST on downloading bible from the Internet…

  • +5

    People pay for bibbles?

And to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the King James version, they are giving some 'new' ebook version away, complete with copyright restrictions?

    Weird.

    • +1

eternal salvation comes at a price

      • +21

it always has, it's just that you don't have to pay it..

      • +9

and Jesus has paid that price.

        • I've always wondering who Jesus paid the "ransom" to. Now I know its Rupert Murdoch :)

    • If Rupert's involved … look out for new interpretations … eg. "blessed be the newsmakers …" :)

… and a new twist on the rich man getting through the eye of the needle to heaven :)

  • +3

this reminds me of a quote i once heard which goes:
to most christians, the bible is like a software license agreement, they just scroll to the end and click "i agree"

i didn't think anyone actually read the bible except ministers/priests.

    • +4

lol nice quote, funny because its perhaps a bit too true sometimes.

I read the the bible regularly and so do many of my friends. to us, the bible is a means to an end, it's not the reading that is special but the person behind the book.

  • Anyone know if this one includes Deuterocanonical books? Thanks

    • +1

No, it doesn't. AFAIK most Protestant translations don't.

      Edit: Wikipedia confirms

  • Great deal, but I cant up rank it??:(:( I've been really slack in my bible reading though. Damn you procrastination!

  • Awesome deal :) NIV is the most widely used version of the Bible and I've always been bothered that I have to purchase it for an offline version! On iPod Touch this is perfect :) Thanks.

  • How good is this NIV Bible?

I've seen other versions under $40, which had good reviews.

If you swing that way, the official ESV app from Crossway for iphone and android is the simplest, cleanest bible app out there. its offline, and iphone version has an ultra fast search function.

  • Why do religious folk have absolutely no sense of humour when it comes to religion? Everything is personal for some reason.

I am an atheist so does my opinion suddenly constitute some sort of disrespect? You can have your opinion and I can have mine. Well I thought I could.

    • +3

You are going to hell because you dared to ask this question! So why not familiarise yourself with hell?

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UbqZ_oN5do

      • lol its been ages since I saw that clip

      • Luckily for us the Jewish bible is included in the download….

    • +3

Well, religion IS a very personal thing because it's about what people think is true, and it impacts on how you live (as least it's supposed to). So Australian humour that tends to make fun of things doesn't tend to go down well.

On the other hand, jokes like this I think goes down much better:
A young and nervous bride planning her wedding was increasingly terrified about her upcoming marriage. To calm her nerves, she decided to have a Bible verse which had always brought her comfort (1 John 4:18, "There is no fear in love; for perfect love casts out fear") engraved on her wedding cake. So she called the caterer and all arrangements were made.

About a week before the wedding, she received a call from the catering company. "Is this really the verse you want on your cake?" they asked. Yes, she confirmed, it was the one she wanted, and after a few more questions they said they would decorate the cake as requested.

The wedding day came, and everything was beautiful…until the reception, when the bride walked in to find the cake emblazoned with John 4:18: "For you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband."

    • I find Ricky Gervais very funny thank you very much.

  • still no download button yet…? :(

    • It worked for me with no problems. Maybe try shutting down the app and starting it again?

    • The iphone version has a refresh button on the bible list that you need to press.
Android is a bit of a pain cause they haven't put that refresh button.
You need to uninstall it, reboot your phone and then reinstall it and then it should come up.
      Its the 2010 niv

      • just did a fresh install on my other android phone and it did not come up D=

        • nvm got it working on one phone

    • For Android users, if you can't see it yet try clearing the Data cache. (Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Bible -> Clear Data)

      That worked for me!

  • The app kept crashing when trying to sign up on my iPhone, so I followed the link from above & signed up quickly & easily on their website. Then I signed in using the app on my iPhone & it downloaded very quickly. No problems doing it this way.

  • +1 :)

    MP3:AAC
    Mac:iPod
    Agnostic:Christian?

Another conversion program? I'll try it :)

But, being open-minded, I'd like the other sacred texts too (being a good OzBargainer).

  • Since this download is free only for a few days, does anyone know what happens if I need to hard reset my iPad/iPhone?

I'll need to reinstall Youversion but then the NIV will not be available anymore? Is there a way to keep a copy?

    Thanks

    • Install it now.

Apple's itunes will remember that you, ie. your account id+password, have installed it … and you can install it again for free if you need to.

If you have more than one device in your, say, family provided they use your id they will also be able to get it for free.

  • Trying to install from Android (HTC Desire running Froyo - Miui-au 1.2.4), but every time I try to download or do anything with the settings it force closes. Have tried wiping the cache, wiping the settings/data, uninstalling and reinstalling, but still force closes. Also factory reset and reinstalled the system, as a new version of Miui had come out anyway, so this was a good excuse.

Anyone had similar and solved it?

  • Can someone help me find this on the iTunes store?? I'm searching for "Youversion" but I can't seem to find this particular app? It does show me some Bibles, but I don't think it is the correct one.
Edit: Figured it out. The app is called "Bible" by publisher "LifeChurch.tv"

  • Be careful when seeking inspiration:

"You should kill your child if he strikes you" - Exod. 21:15
"If you work on the Sabbath, you should be put to death." - Exod. 35:2-3
"If you curse, you should be stoned to death." - Lev. 24:14-15
"Happiness is smashing children upon the rocks." -Psalms 137:9
"Women should be subjugated by their husbands." - 1 Pet. 3:1-7

Yeah, the Bible's pretty funny when you read it out of context. Just hope you don't do what this guy did:

A man was looking into the Bible for some guidance. Not knowing where to look, he decided to simply open the Bible randomly and point his finger at a passage. Wherever his finger landed, he would take as advice.

The first time he did that, he found: "He went away and hanged himself" (Matt 27:5).
Not knowing what to make out of that, he tried again.
This time it was: "Go and do likewise" (Luke 10:37).
Completely baffled, he tried a third time: "What you are about to do, do quickly" (John 13:27).
