Toys R Us Refused Refund for Incorrectly Priced Item

I purchased $200 worth of different toys from Toys R Us. I understand they are under administration, so no refund or exchange will be provided, therefore I checked all sticker prices before going to the counter.

When I was checking receipt after making payment, I noticed that I have been charged $30 extra for one of the items. I immediately pointed out the error to staff but they said no refund. I spoke with the manager and even showed them discounted price sticker and he stated that somebody put wrong sticker here. However your bad luck, as we won't offer refund, even if it's not your mistake.

What could I do in this case?

    I noticed at toyrsus the discount stickers are pretty confusing and the in store price check terminals don't show the discount price.

    To be honest there is probably nothing you can do (although it does wrong). If you were to lodge a complaint with ACCC/consumer protection or what ever by the time they get round to doing something about it the store will be closed.

    So check the prices next time before you pay.

    Not every retailer abides by the voluntary scanning code of conduct.

    Therefore if you go to buy something and they quote you a different price to what you expected, it's your choice to accept their offer to sell it at that price or not.

    An advertisement or even a price tag does not constitute an offer… however incorrect advertising/etc could fall afoul of other consumer laws/protections.

    I know it sucks in your case but I think anything you get would be out of goodwill.

    You'd have more luck getting a free item in compensation than getting your $30 back. You're pretty low down on the list of debts that Toys R Us is holding.

      Toys'R'Us is trading under administration. The administrator takes legal liability of transactions that occur after they take over. The debt lies with the administrator

    just do a credit card chargeback

        Nothing's wrong. If you can't work it out with the vendor, kick it up to the bank to deal with.

      • Same thought as redfox. Did you happen to get a photo of the ticket to correspond with the item?

        • You don't need a photo or anything, when you initiate a charge-back, the merchant needs to fight it if they don't agree. If they don't fight it, they lose out by default.
          Now do you think trs will bother to fight a $30 chargeback given the sh*t they are in right now?
          Also you should know that if you have been a "good" customer (i.e. not charging back every now and then), it is very likely for your bank to issue you a goodwill credit even if you lose the charge-back, esp when the amount involved is trivial.
          Moral of the story is to ALWAYS use a credit card for a transaction if something might go wrong, especially for purchasing goods. I only use my giftcards when the merchant is well trusted or paying for bills/government services & etc. You should NEVER pay by cash/eftpos when buying from someone in administration.

        • @truetypezk: Maybe I'm mistaken here but I thought when opening a chargeback, you are disputing the validity of the authorisation of the transaction by the cardholder, and the merchant will be required to submit documentation such as original invoice and transaction receipts.

          My understanding of the scenario here is that the tax invoice amount had items which scanned at a higher price than what was displayed on the tag in the store. The Op then proceeded to pay this higher price and agreed to it when they provided their credit card. Given we're in Australia where there's PIN or contactless, there's unlikely to be a card not present issue.

          If the merchant simply provides the tax invoice/receipt which agrees with the (higher) payment amount, I don't know if the Op will be able to get the chargeback request (not counting a goodwill offer). The photo of the tag may help explain the situation, but again, this is disputing a term leading up to the sale but not the validity of the sale itself.

          ACCC/Fair Claims Tribunal may be able to help in this instance around the misleading information leading to the sale, but I'm not sure if a chargeback would.

          There are many reasons for charge-backs, you can download a form from any card issuer to take a look. The OP is not disputing the validity of the authorisation, but doesn't agree on the amount charged.

  • Pricing at Rebel sport happens like this all the time. You look at price on rack, Go to checkout and its totally different.. Of coarse you dont realise this till after you get home and check receipt. I always now check before I get home. But all the sales person says is oh that happens all the time. They do offer refund if your not happy. Just alot of mucking around.

    Sometimes people/ staff put the wrong item on a shelf. Then when you look at it. You may think its the cheaper item on sale, but in actual fact its not. The current way they have it at toys r us is just the discounted price. Not always clear as to which Discount applies. Was looking at some soccer goals. 2 different typres, but could have been either if one type moved to other shelf..

    If you questioned it and they still didnt offer refund its hard to push it as they are closing down.

    This is why I always calculate the discount and add up my totals before going to the cash register.. At the cash register it only shows the full price on the display but discounted price is displayed on receipt. If you have a precalculated price then you can question it before paying..

    You are dealing with an administrator, not a retailer. Forget !
    I mean for $30 why even waste our time…OMG!
