POLL: Did You on-Sell or 'Broden' Anything for a Profit?

So most of us can't resist the temptation to buy when something comes up at such a bargain basement price.

But I don't want to hoard too much stuff, so some of the things that I scored, I then listed for sale on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace and sold for a small profit. That doesn't make me a Broden does it?

Anyone else have this experience? Or be honest and share if you ever saw a deal here on OzB and bought it with the aim of selling it for a Profit. Answer the poll and/or comment with your experience.

Did you ever flip/onsell one or more items for a profit?

I recently bought some wallets from mywalit on sale, $35 each normally $150 each. If you spent $100 you got free postage (instead of $30 postage) so I got 3 plus I got a 10% off code for signing up to the newsletter. Am using one, sold one for $70 and still have an extra that I can sell later or give as a gift. Will be a profit over all and I got an excellent wallet in my favourite colour scheme (Sangria - purple, pink and orange) and it matches my handbag from the same company so I was quite happy. They sold out about half an hour after I got my 3.

I used to try to buy gaming stuff to onsell but the effort is no longer worth it. Income is too sporadic and there's the risk of making losses. And people are too clued in nowadays for there to ever be anything worthwhile at garage sales. So I decided to leave what slim pickings there are to the more desperate.

          I like this.

A OZ-B'er from way back, having the time to ask another OZ-B'er from way back if they're ok.

Kudos Spackbace, thanks for the reminder that OZB can be a nifty little community.

Savas, hope all is good LD

@theguyrules: That's three years, that's almost a lifetime (multiple lifetimes for insects even). And Savs has been a fairly active member, so maybe that's why it seems longer. I mean, it's obviously not as way back as 2009, but it's still a fair while to be an active member.

@Adz81: For sure, hes got more comments in 3 years than my 9 years.

  • Only a few of things.
Nintendo Classic Mini (just listed on ebay/local buy and sell FB pages)
Iphone SE 64gb (resold within an hour after buying to CEX at $75 profit each phone i did like 6 phones as they limit the amount of a single item that could be sold to them in a short time span.

Back when Book Depository was ridiculously cheap and eBay fees weren't ridiculously high, I used to sell Moleskine diaries on eBay. e.g. for a diary with a RRP of $36, I'd buy from Book Depository for $12 and sell for $20 BIN or let it go to auction and end up getting more due to the end of year I need a diary for next year frenzy

    Weed when I was 18,

    • That seems like the worst time to sell it.

Under 18 - lower penalties for getting caught, still technically a child.
Over 30 - You've already messed up your life, lived through the best part, may as well take the risk, earn some money, and hang around the younger kids trying to impress them like the skeez you are.

  • no i'm a hoarder

  • I've picked up stuff off the side of the road, used it for a while and then sold it

  • Secondhand CD's are a hobby business of mine. Also have a garage full of secondhand stuff I always keep meaning to sell….

  • NES Mini
Nintendo Switch - The original Kogan sale where it was $350 and people were still paying over retail just to secure a console
Pop Vinyls - I hate these things with a passion but they sell well, just bought a few of the SDCC ones for $150, should be able to sell the lot for ~$300
    Big Mac Sauce
Amiibos - These I had because I loosely collect them but a few of mine jumped in value to about $50 each when the Nintendo Switch released.

How on earth do you put up with insufferable Pop buyers though? I had a clean out a few months ago and selling 50 vinyl records was significantly easier than a couple of Pops.

My favourite was one who wanted a $10 item hand delivered to him 20km away.

Having spent a little time in some of the nerdier collector communities I do not doubt you one bit, they can be a fickle lot (anyone who onsells at a profit is the devil even if the item was not originally bought with intention to resell). I've only sold a couple pops before so haven't got any horror stories yet. I do make sure to package them extermely well, surrounded in bubblewrap and crumpled newspaper in a shipping box, because I know if there's even the slightest crease in the box when it arrives the person will lose their mind.

  • I bought a keyboard on gumtree and sold it for more a bit a year later. Not deliberately getting a profit, and I did use it during that year a lot, but the person who sold it had a super low asking price.

  • I didn't… but notice since the 90% off Amazon appliance sale there are quite a few $300 retail Dolce Gusto coffee machines on ebay for $100

  • I know a guy who once picked up 3 PS3s when they were on clearance at Myer and then sold for profit.

Yep, back when AMEX had a Harvey Norman statement credit offer. Activated it on two cards and bought 4 pairs of Apple Airpods. After the statement credits, they worked out to be $150 a pair. Sold 1 pair for $200. However, I required the remaining 3 pairs as they were gifts though should have sold them all.
