Can you post a surface deal from the good guys as well please.

    • Don't forget Bing Lee as well 😂

  • How much is it normally?

  • +1

Umm, couldn't just combine the posts man?

    • Two different retailers

    In before:

    • 4GB RAM / 128GB SSD isn't enough
    • 8th Gen Intel processors are better
    • Surfaces are too expensive
    • +1

That's strange. I didn't think they had made an 8th gen M3 processor yet.
At least this is actually trying to be a laptop, not a tablet.
Sigh, who would spend this much on such outdated specs though…

I got a Lenovo Yoga 710-11.3" for same price over 18 months ago from JB Hifi. Has more RAM, upgradable SSD and same specs bar using 1080p screen.
Intel hasn't bought out an 8th Gen Mobile series as yet and not likely to until next year apparently for an upgrade.

I would avoid Lenovo because from my experience with the Yoga. Specs is good but long term quality is bad. After 18 months things starting to breakdown. Keyboard not working, follow by wifi then the SSD not working. Some people say why not get Lenovo because is cheaper and has better specs. But it come at a cost. Quality are not great.

        • @kml22: I must have been pretty lucky then. My hinges are still very tough and still takes a bit of force to open up. Although admittedly, I never use mine in the 360 degree tablet mode. Keyboard works great (I liked these much better than the Macbook 12). Was my daily workhorse for 16 months until I changed jobs recently (which provided me another Lenovo). Really loved the fact it is basically a 12" screen and weighed under 1kg with keyboard and all. The only other alternatives at the time were the Macbook 12 or the Asus Zenbook 3 which both were twice as expensive as this for very little to no gain.

        • @kml22: my x250 is still going VERY strong.

      4GB RAM / 128GB SSD isn't enough

It isn't? Jeez don't I have egg on my face then, both my current and previous laptop have that configuration, and I wrongly assumed they've done me fine up till now!

8th Gen Intel processors are better

Of course they are - and the 9th gen will be even better …What's your point?

      Surfaces are too expensive

Yeah they probably are - but people seem to keep buying them!

My phone has more RAM than this..

No seriously. 4GB should not even be considered for new Windows Laptops if you want to use it for anything more than opening up one app at a time. 8GB should be minimal and both posts (Surface Pro and Surface book) are NOT upgradable in memory as it is all soldered on to reduce thickness etc.

You never buy a laptop for "now". You buy it to ensure it is still good enough in a few years time that you may want to upgrade it to another model. Given the FORCED updates of Windows 10 and the increasing bloat of even the basic applications (eg. Anti-Malware, Office etc) then these specs really are not satisfactory within 18 months time.
This is not like a desktop or a bigger laptop that allows for some basic upgrades to RAM or storage, so you are basically stuck with these specs until you pretty much get rid of it.

        • Can you disabled the win 10 updates completely? I read on internet we can. Edit the registry and metered internet data trick.

        • @dragonindespair: MS is essentially saying "no" officially. There are hacks, but they have been closing these loopholes in the past quaterly updates to make the process more complex. Not to mention their constant nagging in the systray to update.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to stop it without imparing on the overall functionality of Windows 10 unfortunately. :(

      • BTW.. have you checked how much your updates folder is on Windows after a number of updates? How much free RAM there is after you've loaded everything up for a typical user? 128GB and 4GB of RAM do not go very far these days at all when you account for those factors.

    • 4GB should not even be considered for new Windows Laptops

For most laptops that come with Windows pre-installed, I agree. Although since this is Microsoft's own laptop/tablet, I would say it is fine for most light-medium users.

are NOT upgradable in memory as it is all soldered on to reduce thickness etc.

I think that because it is soldered, Microsoft are confident that it is enough.

      • I think that because it is soldered, Microsoft are confident that it is enough

Assumption. Confidence that this is a low end product that people will upgrade within 18 months to higher model. There's reasons why I still keep hear people complain why their laptops / devices are so slow these days. Not a user issue, but really they went and bought a low end device but because of the M$ name, they think they bought bee's knees. It's no different from buying the bottom of the range BMW and thinking it's performance because BMW offers "Ultimate driving experience"..

        • +1

          Assumption.

Not really, I just tend to look beyond the easiest answer.

That and I have confidence that the company that owns the most popular, well-known operating system in the world is more than competent enough to test their products and provide them with adequate hardware.

But the easier answer is to just think that they're trying to cheat the customer into buying their higher-end models.

        • @Lorindor: That's where you're wrong.. No company or person out there is infallible and that includes the biggest names out there such as Microsoft or Apple. Look at their track record and you'll see that Microsoft has screwed up royally in many departments ranging from missing the boat on the Mobile Industry to pushing out sub standard products such as Windows 8.x or the much hated Windows Update system on Windows 10. People see them as a necessary evil, but their design choices are rather questionable in most instances out there.

  • XPS beats all these ultrabooks hands down.

    • +1

Considering that the cheapest XPS 13 is $600 more than this, it would want to.

  • Given the consensus is that $979 is still overpriced for this laptop, what price would people here consider a bargain? My partner is looking for a light-medium use ultrabook/2-in-1
