Baratza Sette 270 $439 + $9.95 Flat Rate Shipping @ Alternative Brewing

50

The Baratza Sette 270 coffee grinder is one for filter coffee and espresso enthusiasts alike. Breaking away from the former standard, this grinder has a fixed inner burr and a rotating outer burr. Unlike every grinder of its size, the Sette’s revolutionary 40mm steel conical burrs cut grinding time in half, producing 3.5g to 5.5g per second.

Developed over 8 years, the burrs will remain sharp and aligned for many years, as well as retain less ground coffee than competing grinders. Also appearing for the first time from Baratza is a gear speed reduction of 19:1 with the grinder’s new super-efficient gear drive system.

The Sette 270’s 30 grind settings can produce coffee grounds for espresso, as well as Chemex. If you’re brewing espresso and want to get it just right, the grinder provides 9 micro-adjustment settings to help you achieve that perfect grind size.

The LED display allows users to program 3 dosing settings, down to a tenth of a second. You can even grind right into your coffee brewer, thanks to the convertible holding mechanism.

*Please note the Sette 270 is not suitable for methods that require a very coarse grind size like French Press and Cold Brew.

This paired with a breville dual boiler would be fantastic.
    Better than the smart grinder

    • Yes, bought this as the smart grinder is just v poor in terms of wastage and also when changing the coarseness of the grind.

Have the 270w, very good grinder, if a little noisy. Highly recommended.

    • Does the weighing capability help?

    • How useful and usable is the weighing function?

The 270w is tempting but have seen many complaints that the weighing capabilities are not very reliable. They fixed up a lot of issues of the 270w with the 270wi. But the WI is way too expensive for my liking. So I'll stick with the 270 and do the weighing of beans pre-grind, minimal retention.

      • I very occasionally have it stop grinding prematurely, but it's otherwise very accurate.

The weighing function is very useful if you try different beans regularly - which I do. Eliminates the need to weigh before grinding when dialling it in with new beans.

        • I usually only have 2 different beans at any one time. The weighing function will be nice though. Maybe my next grinder. Happy that you get accurate and consistent grinds. I just didn't want to risk it for the money being asked. Not gonna lie, would definitely love to not having to weigh before grinding.

      • I think you can convert the 270w to a 270wi by replacing the display / cpu.

  • Wow….Coffee really is an expensive hobby

    • Really expensive addiction*
I think the trouble is people have coffee every day, and if you're switching between good quality and low quality you could easily tell the difference.

Its the same as any other hobby of really (like sports or photography). The more you spend on equipment the better the end product can be, but spending more doesn't guarantee a great end product. A good barista will make a better coffee with a cheap home espresso machine than an amateur will with a top of the range industrial machine.

Don't take this as me not agreeing. I don't understand how people have the money for it. This one is actually quite cheap compared to some of the top end ones (if you go to the link, look at the related products. $1,500 just to GRIND the coffee, then you have to extract/brew it)

At $4.50 a coffee, a home setup doesnt take that long to pay for itself … and you have the convenience of it being there whenever you want it.

  • Just ordered one. not bothered by the WI version (which has Bluetooth capability for what I dont know) - I use a Breville SmartGrinderPro and fet very consistent weight from using the same time. i can see that it would be useful if you cahnge beans, but I stick with the same each time, so happy just to find the right time to get 20gms and then set and forget. Looks much better than the Breville in terms of “clumping”.

    • I have the 270w and indeed its very nice with no clumping at all. You can tamp directly after grinding without any redistribution at all.

It's not as versatile as the smart grinder if you need to change between pullover grinds and espresso grinds however, as the grinder comes with a second set of burrs which are optimised for coarse grinding. The burrs are simply at such a much higher conical angle than a normal grinder so that it requires slightly different tracks in the burrs for coarser grinds.
