Sold an Item on eBay........but Am Convinced I'll Be Scammed!

So I sold a high value item today and seeking some advice on how to proceed. Earlier today, I received a few messages from a new buyer with zero feedback asking why I wasn't allowing my item to be shipped to the United Arab Emirates. The message was short and to the point. As I want to avoid issues with shipping and overseas buyers, I restrict my listing to Australian buyers only. A few hours later I received another message from the same buyer, this time asking if I would consider changing the listing so he could purchase and have it shipped overseas, again to the United Arab Emirates.

As I was at work, I was unable to reply until I got home and have now found he/she has gone ahead and purchased the item. I assumed the buyer changed their address to an Australian one. I've checked the postal address on Google Maps and it's located at unmarked warehouse in NSW. The surrounding area consist of commercial buildings and seems to be in a fairly isolated area. I couldn't find any additional information on whose currently occupying the warehouse but I assume it's likely an unregistered pack and send operation or worse. It could even be unoccupied - I'm uncertain. Anyway, the item has been payed for via Paypal there's no indication on when funds will clear. Under the item I see: "Your funds will be available on: Unavailable". There's no date listed. The funds remain uncleared in my Paypal account yet eBay is requesting I ship the item! I figure these are more then sufficient warning signs for me not to proceed.

Wanting to know if anybody else has come across this previously and other then likely losing my money and item, what type of scam this entails? Also, what is the best way to cancel this order without and possible repercussion from eBay or the seller? I have the option of cancelling the item based "item damaged", "seller request cancellation" or "there is something wrong with the sellers address." There's no option to select "buyer smells of a scammer"…I've checked! I want to select "item damaged" but still want to be able to re-list and there is nothing wrong with "sellers address" other then to my own findings.

Any help would be appreciated.

Update 31/7/2018:

Thanks for all the suggestions everybody. I've gone ahead and cancelled the sale based on "there's something wrong with the buyers address". I received the following message immediately afterwards: "Got it - we'll let the buyer know that you want to cancel this order. Buyer has 10 days to confirm". Hopefully that's the end of it and buyer won't drag this on.

I'm considering relisting the item at a lower price in the hope that a local buyer will want it instead.

Update 1/8/2018:
Another 2 messages today. Buyer has since requested an explanation on why I've cancelled the item. I replied and apologised stating that I didn't want to send the item to a non residental address and had no indication of when funds will clear. Received another message asking if I would consider shipping to another address, this time to the United States! After ignoring that message, he/she followed up asking if I wanted additional money for the item!! Mentioned the previous address he provided was for a forwarding company. Begin to question if this person is just really persistent or if they just have a money to spare and can't take no for an answer.

I wouldnt usually recommend doing this, but if you are 100% sure its a scam, wait till the money clears, then withdraw it into your account, wait till it clears, then close all accounts in paypal. Then send the item, you will be 100% covered either way, and it will then be paypals problem.

Also make sure its fully insured, and sent with tracking. Take photos of the item and all serial numbers, photos of it in the box, then fully boxed etc. Then a photo of the box in the post office, and a photo with the receipt you used to send it. Pretty much document every step of the way, so they cant blame you in any way.

    • Thanks garetz, those are some good tips. I'm currently doing some of those things but not all. I will going forward though, particularly on items such as this.

      • How are they paying? if it is by paypal then it doesn't matter if you get the money and withdraw it, the buyer will lodge a dispute, Paypal will believe the buyer and claim the money back on your account.

        • This is why garetz said to close all accounts in PayPal

Send an empty box with a tracking number?

    • Try and scam the scammer? Keep the item and money if it ever clears! I don't think that will help me much in the the short term or the reputation of my account as a seller if I was totally wrong about this.

      • Claim it was an accident after?

I'm sure eBay won't hurt you for 1 misplaced parcel…

    • No, you need to weigh the box down with rocks.

  • If you are worried just cancel the transaction saying the item is broken or similar. Then block the buyer when complete. May have to wear the ebay fee tho.

NO!! if you do this then it is a mark against your seller account.

cancel the sale. - "issue with buyers address"

OP - do not send an expensive item overseas.

      • Thanks altomic. Might wait a day or two before I cancel to see if there are any changes to the funds held by Paypal or if the buyer makes any further requests. Does cancelling an item based on the address allow me to do so without any followup or permission from the buyer?

I had no intentions to post it overseas. I've made the exception with cheaper items and with buyers who have established accounts but this is not one of those cases.

A date on when the funds will be available won't be given until you've marked it as being sent.

This is the message that shows for an item I've recently sold:

Well done on selling your item! Although your buyer has paid, your funds will be held for up to 21 days and will be available by XX/XX/XXXX

To make sure eBay is a safe and trusted marketplace, we implement this common industry practice in some instances such as Limited User History, Past Suspensions, and/ or High Risk transactions.
If a buyer reports a problem with a sale or an item, it may take longer than 21 days to receive your payment. So respond quickly to your buyer to resolve any issues.

How to get your funds faster:
          1. Send quickly after your buyer pays
          2. Add tracking details in My eBay under sold items. If you have used eBay to print your label, tracking details will be uploaded automatically

      • cancel the sale. - "issue with buyers address"

This is really the one and only thing you should be doing. Anything else is messing around.

paypal and ebay suck in his way, they take the sellers fees and wash their hands clean of the situation, if this happens constantly to high priced items it can really sink someones business.

  • I'm surprised nobody has suggested the most common sense option - contact PayPal and report the user for engaging in fraud and cancel the transaction.

    • It would be common sense to read the post before commenting.

How has the buyer committed fraud? There are indicators this COULD BE a fraudulent transaction.

      • That's not really your problem, is it? They are clearly doing something shady (i.e. asking for an item to be shipped to an abandoned warehouse), let PayPal deal with the issue.

        • The real issue is, who pays the fees? ship or not, paypal will make you pay the fees regardless. Thats not fair for the sellers.

Cancel - there is a problem with the buyers address. It’s shifty.

  • +6

Cancel - Problem with buyers address, eBay wont do anything! (Been there done that)

  • wait till you get the money then who cares

  • Cancel it. Anything else is going to cause massive issues.

If payment is not clear usually can happen to new seller, payment won't clear for a week or two.

  • This is the issue with Paypal as a casual seller for high value items. They won't clear the money for up to 21 days - after you've shipped it! The risk here is that the buyer will put in a bogus claim to Paypal to recover his money and you won't see a cent.

It's because of this risk I'll be avoiding using PayPal when selling high value items - it's too much stress.

I reckon your best bet is to cancel - Problem with buyers address - and start over.
