Got notify that something I was watching on Amazon had dropped in price, thought it was a pricing error, but my order was fulfilled!

Looks like Gobe are trying to clear out an older model of their CPL filters.

Don't know the reputation of the brand, but for this price, it's worth getting to get polarized filters for your camera lenses if you have not done so yet.

  • Ordered the 72mm CPL. Thanks.

Quick googling suggests there are three sub-models (1, 2 and 3 peaks) which I assume means from low (1 peaks) to high (3 peaks) grade. These look to be the 1 peak model.

Anyway for a few dollars it's worth a punt. Might be pleasantly surprised in the end!

  • thanks, ordered a few sizes

  • am i being paranoid or what? the seller was just launched. the last time an amazon seller was just launched with bunch of cheap stuffs was a fake one if i remember correctly…

    • Make sure the seller is "Gobe Australia", Amazon tends to redirect you to other sellers when the item you want to look at is sold out by said seller.

  • +1

No more 58mm (though it says 3 more in stock)

  • +1

5 trees planted for every Gobe product purchased. Join the revolution!

    Don’t forget cashrewards at 6%.

I don’t have a dslr, but want one for my dash cam. B1W. Is it possible to cut these lenses to the required size?

    • Dashcam lenses are tiny, you're better off looking for filters designed for drones.

  • none for my Sony lenses… the sizes I need are not on the list

    • They were there, sold out fast however

  • Missed the 49mm but got the 67. Thanks OP!

  • Every size gone up in price or out of stock, just as I was checking my lenses :-(

  • These are really good for teaching/showing quantum mechanics.

  • Damn, missed out :(

  • +1

If you're going to use a polariser a lot I'd pass on these and put the money towards one of the good ones like B+W or Hoya HD (not just Pro1). I have the Hoya HD which has lower light loss than others, and unlike their Pro1 range you can actually clean them reasonably well with a cloth not just smear fingerprints around.

    • +4

Putting ~$3 towards a filter that costs +$150 will hardly make a dent.
For most people ~$3 for these filters are worth a try especially if they don't need a high end filter.

      • haha true. I was too focused looking at the original price and thinking they're probably pretty meh to begin with :P

    • I'd like to see the difference in polarising effect across the lens. Even on my Hoya HD Nano CPL filter I can see a little bit of change in the polarisation as you spin the lens. I can't imagine a $30 filter will ever be very uniform.

  • ugh missed them all! :(

  • +1

don't know what this even is. Just bought a few rofl

  • I am not a fan of filters. Especially cheap ones, horrible lens ghosting. Had many a photo ruined by lens ghost.

    • You need to ensure that the filters are completely clean, void of any smudges, scratches, dust or marks.

As a person who wears glasses, I'm a stickler for making sure the lenses on my glasses and on my camera are completely clean. Even the slightest marks will affect the visuals. I haven't had any issues with the cheaper filters following this mantra, but then again, I avoid pointing the camera into direct light, unless I'm after sun stars or lens flare effects.

      • I am aware about lens cleanliness, it goes for any glass, whether lens or filter.

The ghosting is toughest at event photography, whether a concert shot, or even in a restaurant with chandeliers. No amount of coating can stop ghosting.

        • You got me there, in those situations, I would either use a lens hood, remove the filter, or both.

Shooting at events are hard, you don't have time to compose the shot, you just got to get the moment regardless. So I can sympathise with you when the shots gets ruined.

Just got an email saying my order was cancelled

    • Likewise, order was cancelled, must have been a price error, poor form.

    • +1

      Mine has been shipped

    • I received a shipping and tracking notification (55mm, 77mm, 82mm filters) quickly followed by a refund notification for the 82mm (Reason for refund: Item out of stock).

    • Damn, sorry to hear.

Did they tell you why it was cancelled?
and which size did you order?

  • received mines today, they are open Boxes :(

Edit: amazon is going to contact the seller and get back to me with either replacements or refund.

    • same, seal was opened.
but i believe they only open to make sure the filters are in perfect condition.

I would keep the filters if they are all in good condition.

      • They seller is Gobe, why would they need to open it? they make it. non sense

        • check the reviews on amazon.com, seems these filters have scratches problem. many buyer reported this issue.

        • @liyuw:

ok, i'll wait for the seller reply.

        • @liyuw: Received mine this morning. All have tape seals that have been lifted and fingernail impressions in the foam. All have smudges and dust specks. The 77mm has some fine scratches on the inside glass.

Opening them to make sure the filters were in perfect condition? I don't know what they're smoking up in Byron Bay, but they didn't do a very good job ;)

        • @Thrift:

Yes, one has clearly been used. Dust on a few of them

    • +1

Same, my seals were opened already too, and inconsistent contents in the packages.

      82mm = Filter, Microfiber cloth
      77mm = Filter, Microfiber cloth, Anti-moisture beads
      49mm = Filter only.

  • +1

    Received all five of mine,

as with others, most had an open seal.

Some had the separate microfiber cloth in a cardboard envelope where others had the cloth inside the plastic case.

now to give them a go to see how they perform

  • Man, this deal seems to be getting worse and worse, sorry everyone!

Another word of warning, don't screw them on so tight! being slim, the ridges on them are very hard to grip to undo them.

I took forever trying to unscrew them and couldn't, was all about to give up until the wife had a go, she has painted nails with a thick strong coating, so was able to push against the ridges to undo it. My nails are all busted up and my fingers are hurting now.

    • +2

I messaged the seller asking if they were seconds or returns, prompt response:

I can assure you these are brand new filters that have never been used. Some were checked as a quality control measure as this was older stock and we wanted to make sure they were in perfect condition. If possible can you please send me photos of these issues and I will look into it further for you.

I'm not convinced about 'perfect condition' - this is the 77mm I received: (backlit to accentuate the blemishes): https://i.imgur.com/H3iI49m.jpg

A quick clean cleared up most of the smudging, so I'll give it a proper clean and try it out.

For the price I still think it's a deal, just not a good experience of Gobe filters. Thanks for posting it.

  • Would anyone in Sydney like to swap their 52mm for a 55mm?

  • like mine were opened and scratches on them clearly visible when held to light..
