Wireless broadband modem

Hi All!

I need wireless broadband. Not sure which carrier to go with, or what deals there are out there?
It will probably just be used in melbourne city.
I would prefer prepaid, but open to postpaid if there is a great deal going.
Thanks for your help!

    Not 3. Anything but 3.

From my experience in terms of network quality, Telstra is definitely the best, but you pay for what you get. 3 is horrible and drops out everywhere and anywhere.

  • For purely casual use when out and about, tether to a smart phone using Bluetooth = "free".

Not sure I would ever want to use wireless as my "main" connection… that sounds rather expensive unless you really were restrained on the downloads you did. I can use a GB in only a week when travelling, so be realistic or the excess usage charges will be scary!

  • For the best coverage Telstra will be your best bet. However their modems are fairly expensive and the prepaid plans aren't exactly cheap either. Not competitive unless you sign into a contract.

Despite Three and Vodafone copping flak I've had no issues with the Crazy johns modem but your mileage will vary. I think they currently have a 4 gig starter pack at half price for $19 prepaid. The modern is free.

  • anything but 3 + vodafone + optus = best to go with telstra

  • as llama suggests, if you have a phone capable of 3G internet connection, look at upping the data content on whatever plan/prepaid you are on, then tether (connect) it to your laptop. Might save having another device and save $ on another subscription. since I don't know your phone carrier or phone model I can't elaborate.

Here's a suggestion if you want to go with Telstra
Prepaid MF30 wireless hotspot. Comes with 5GB to use within 90 days. Usually around ~$149, but at times you can get it cheaper. Sold at Big W, JB Hifi, Aust Post, Telstra shop.
