    • i think you;d have a leg to stand on if you 'upgrade' moreso than downgrading to a cheaper plan. worked for me once, but that was no less than 4 years ago tbh.

  • +1

Upgrade my two numbers to the $36 plans got two emails asking me to call optus regarding an issue:
cue hard sell on galaxy tab and extra sim
Told him no and have been on hold for 10 minutes now.

  • I just joined this plan today and I can't complain.
I switch over from Vodafone from a $40 sim only plan that offers 20gb of data. Spoke to Vodafone through their online chat channel and the best that they could offer me was $60 p/m for 60gb of data. It makes no senses why they would bother with a counter offer like that. Anyways long story short I'm going to pay my cancelation fee of $80 and start my new plan with Optus. It is to hard to pass on the 20% discount and this is the best data plan on the market. Their staff discount is 25% and we are getting 20%, not bad IMO

  • I have been with Optus for nearly a year now signed up for the 15gb deal for $30 when it first came out. They stuffed up my first bill which I complained about, I have been charged only $17 each month for the last 10 months if I upgrade my plan to this one will I only have to pay $23 a month? Could they charge me for the previous 10 mth errors?

  • +1

Thanks! Just called Vodafone, they matched with optus. $36 per month for 30GB.

    • Spoke to Voda and they said they would match if I'm an existing Voda customer so No Deal.

      • Yes, I am an existing with Vodafone.

    • Was this just an upgrade to your current Vodafone plan? I'm currently on a 12 month plan, with 6 months left and a $80 early upgrade fee still. Would they let me change to that plan with no fee do you think??

  • You’ve got to be kidding. Just signed up and they add 20% off.

Is there a cooling off period ?

    • 10 days

  • I spoke to someone on online chat about upgrading without a cancellation fee (I'm on the $40 My Plan Plus 12M SIM Only ($36 Student Promo)). They said I can upgrade but the bonus data won't apply. I asked where this is mentioned in the terms and conditions or CIS, and they said it was not mentioned. I think they made it up!

    • The chat stuff just pull their answers out of their a$$. The last three times I've used the chat (most recent yesterday) they've told me information which is completely wrong. I had to pull up documentation to prove to them that the advice given was incorrect. Best to take what they say with a grain of salt.

      • There online sales department didn't know about regional offers, like WTF.

  • Currently on $40 per month with them. Thanks OP!

  • I have just recontracted to the $36 plan and I previously had a student discount on a $40 plan. Will the student discount stack onto this deal and make it $32.40 ?

    • +1

Chat told me it would be $31.50. They take the discount from the initial price, which is better for us. Less 20% of $45, and less 10% of $45. So that's $45-$9-$4.5 = $31.50

      • +1

Awesome thanks for the tip. If I move two other phones onto my Optus account on the 3gb plan ($25-$10 discount for additional Optus Services )will they also qualify for the 10% Student discount on the same billing account ?

  • Thanks OP. I was on $40 for 15gb from May last year and forgot my contract is over.

  • +1

Iphone X 256gb with 205GB for $105 per month. Sold the phone cheap ($1200) to family member. Now paying $55 per month for 205gb + I got there old iphone 6 128gb to sell/keep :D

    • $1,200 is what MobileMonster is offering, so that's a win-win for you.

  • I'm an existing customer for $40/month 30GB, and I tried via live chat to change to the $36/month. They wouldn't do it unless I paid $180 to cancel the rest of my current contract. I was willing to sign up for an extra year at the end of my current contract, but no dice. I'm not paying them $180.

    • Don't sweat to much man, Better offers when your current runs out. Ive had no success with optus live chat.

    • Yep agree don't sweat. As I have found out on numerous occasions there will be better deals when your contract is up.

    • how far in are you? i was on the Optus $40 as well but was bit over 8months in, they signed me up no worries, no fees..try again if you want, it could be the person you speak to. Some are known to be very difficult.

Otherwise, what the other fellas said, wait it out, you'd be only $4 better off and you lose Mobile TV with this offer.

      • Is the mobile TV thing just unmetered access to the iViewer, TenPlay, etc servers, or is it a multicast over 4G type of thing (like iirc Telstra used to do).

Because I don't bother with the former. Times not being right for WA, adverts getting unnecessarily repeated, not always showing what actual broadcast TV is showing, different UIs / features for different channels, not available on Android TV, etc.

  • +1

I signed up for the $45/month less then 30 days ago

They told me there was only a 10 day cooling off period-
then they also refused to do anything to put me on the new plan, unless I was willing to pay a $200+ cancellation fee

What I will do is call back and try to go to the $55/month plan 50GB, which is now $44/mo

    • Update, they refused to put me on the upgraded plan over the phone and include the 20% discount, because it's an 'online only offer'
however I should be able to just sign up online

      • +1

Just signed up for the $55/mo, which is discounted to $44, and offers 50GB (25+25 bonus)

        Online, no problems.

So basically I saved $1/month and got an extra 20GB per month.

      • The customer service/sales staff were absolutely fkn useless.

        • Every Telco is. No matter where in the world. Sad case.

    • +2

      Wow Optus truly are c****…

They asked me to call their online sales department, and said that even though I was moving to a higher plan, because it's $1 cheaper due to the 20% off promo, that I have to pay an early termination fee of $200+.

      Unbelievable.

      • +4

Finally, I called up their complaints / billing dept and told them based on their T&C I should be allowed to upgrade to the higher plan without a cancellation fee, and that I will be going to the TIO if they can't resolve it -

so they let me go onto the $55/plan (currently $44 with the 20% off)

      • Same boat, no luck with online chat :(
I'm only about 2 months into my contract of $50 for 60GB, and to switch to a higher plan ($52 for 80GB current), they asked me to pay a $225 early termination fee. Like. Wow.

      • +1

I would of asked them to charge me a dollar extra a month

        • Thinking outside the box. I like that. Have a like.

    • +3

      Bruh kudos for persistence

    • +1

I signed up just a week ago when the double data offer was supposedly expiring only to find it didn’t expire it got better. I asked that they may add the 20% given how recent it was and they are not prepared to give any leeway at all. Even Harvey Norman will give you a refund on the difference if you buy something and then find it on sale the next week. I’m not impressed and won’t be recontracting my other 2 services with Optus even if it is their prerogative.

      • +1

My thoughts are that i think they would be inclined to if it was same for same, but they have been very cheeky and removed bonus Mobile TV from this deal…thats where they will claim its a new package.

Otherwise, you should have a 10-day cooling off period unless you initiated an "early upgrade" before your current contract ended which then (in my case previously) the 10-day is void.

        • According to Optus there is no 10 day cooling off period. I was going to use it when the 20% offer appeared a few days after signing up

  • +3

All these people signing up for cracking deals from Optus and then a month or two later there is a slightly better Optus deal and they all want to get out of their contract and jump onto the latest deal and not have to pay the contract break fee ? I just cant see how Optus is in the wrong here.

    • +6

In my case it’s merely a few days but you are correct, they are under no compulsion.

Funny story related to this though.

These companies have no idea how many hats the people they don’t care to look after wear. I once managed a large fleet of phones and was actually negotiating contracts when one of the prospective providers managed to show they were really not interested in their customers in other dealings I had with them. I too was under no compulsion and it cost them an $800,000 contract.

A little bit of consideration for your customers really can go a long way.

  • Anyone know if they'll do the student discount on top and if any existing customer has been able to either get an extra discount or netflix thrown in?

    • I tried myself for student discount over chat three times yesterday when the deal was fresh, but had no success. None of my tactics worked sadly haha. On their main homepage it says you can’t apply additional discounts, so slim pickings. I’d love to hear if anyone found success, which is the only reason I’ve hesitated in signing up.

  • -1

I just want to see in the next few weeks people will crying about no bonus data applied, wrong discount, wrong bill, etc etc. Been there

    • Yeah I went through the checkout process, the final checkout screen has the wrong monthly total(ie no discount applied) and it doesn't list the bonus data. So right now I have little faith their online system will even process the order correctly.

    • Well no signs of the discount or the bonus data on my new sign up. They say it reflects on second bill… So first bill I pay full price and get half data..wow?

  • +2

    Vodafone's response.

They increased the data limit to 50G for $45.
It was 30G for $45 as of yesterday.

    • glad I waited.

  • Does student card id get another 10% on top of $36?

    • nope

    • -2

      Yes

      • How did you manage to apply Student discount? I'm looking to do the same!

        • Bought it first then applied the student discount afterwards. Bear in mind you can only use the discount on ONE plan. So if you have an internet plan also you have to choose the phone or internet plan.

  • Has anyone tried with upgrasding yet? As a few people mentioned when you get to the last checkout screen it doesnt show the discount? Can anyone confirm it adds the discount?
    Thanks!!

    • +1

Had my number ported from virgin to Optus on this deal.
Can confirm that even though the contract says $45 per month. My bill says 20% discount so 36$ per month.
Can also confirm that this discount will be applied for 24 months.

  • +1

Has anyone successfully managed to use a Student discount code? If so, how did you manage? Thanks!

  • Hmmn basically same price as my current plan but I'd be swapping unlimited international calls and unmetered TV for an extra 15gb and having free Optus Sport locked in for a further 8 months.

    What to do.

  • +1

cheaper and more data than my first ADSL plan.

  • +1

I had both our phones changed over to the $36 plan this morning. without asking they took another $10 off per month making it $62 per month.
We were at the end of our contract anyway and have been with Optus for years. Seems they still have some wiggle room for a bit better deal.

    • do you also have broadband with them?

      • No the two mobiles are the only services we have with Optus

        • thanks, they are not willing to give me $10 discount for moving 2 SIM to 44 / month plans
How did you sign up, was it online (as existing customer) or instore?
I will just try my luck by signing both online and see if discount appears in account

        • +2

I signed up through live chat. We are already on Optus, the two phone plans were finishing in October but jumped on this, having to pay out the old plan.
I didn't ask for it, he just applied it, making it $31 for each number.

        • @Monty94: live chat says they can apply $10 discount on $25 or $35 plans but not 20% discounted plans

        • +2

@ozdesi: I'm not sure why it was applied. Here is a part of the conversation we had:
          Conor • 08:48 AM
One service is now chnage, I will need another minute for the second
          Conor • 08:50 AM
          Thank you for your patience
          Conor • 08:52 AM
          Done!
          Conor • 08:52 AM
          XXXXXXXXX is the reference
          Conor • 08:52 AM
I have also added $10 discount
          You • 08:52 AM
I just got a text on XXXXXXXXXX saying the contract is 24 months. I thought it was 12 month contract?
          Conor • 08:53 AM
You might have got confused with the data
          Conor • 08:53 AM
15gb bonus is added for 24 months
          Conor • 08:54 AM
The contract is for 12 months
          You • 08:54 AM
          Ok thanks!
          Conor • 08:54 AM
The monthly bill will be $62 and not $72
          You • 08:55 AM
          Awesome thanks!
          Conor • 08:55 AM
          You are welcome

  • This plan is amazing! With the Spotify, Optus Sport, and 30gb data how could you go past it…

  • Is this the best Optus offer to move from Virgin? I have 3 accounts, I need a new handset (student), plus 2 sims (60 Gb) Is there enough data to watch Netflix on tv? Or do I have to pay extra $5 p/m for streaming? The handset offer is an iphone 8 $69 5Gb 24 month contract is this good?

    • Never go on phone contract. There is always better deals around the corner. I say the 65 dollar plan for 80 GB will keep me content.

      • But wouldn't you need to go on a plan to get that? Even if it's for 12-months?

        • If you need an iPhone I suggest holding off till end of September/ early October. The three big telco will be refreshing their offers and data amount.

BYO 12 months offer alot of freedom. After 12 months you are free to jump to another better deal.

        • @ChickenAdobo: I agree, and none of our three main phone services are on 24-month contracts. Having said that, I do have the option to turn any two of them in the next month or so into a 2-year contract if the deal was amazing, because iPhone…

        • @quarrymaster:

It your money 😊 enjoy your new iphones. New gadgets are always exciting times!

  • Thanks!!

I used it to bargain with Vodafone as my current plan is expiring next month.

Vodafone offered $40 for 50gb, 12 months contract.

Wow, the massive 30gb. I only got the regular 30gb :(

  • This has come at a good time for me. Question is, I currently pay $40 p/m and get 12gb. So do I get the $36 plan, or go full on and get 50gb for $44, never ever use wifi again, and call all my rellies overseas all the time cause why not?

    • +1

50 for 44 because you asked and I said so.

  • Virgin customers can combine these deals with having the rest of their current planned paid off. I just got the $36/30gb plan and got the rest of my virgin bills paid :-)

  • I re-contracted one of my sims to the $36 plan. Managed to get $5 credit off as well so $31 in total.

    • What witchcraft did you use for the $5? I tried every incantation that I know, without success.

      • After I sent through to disconnections team. I was blushing. I wasn't going to leave lol

  • Note that you do need to pay extra for the video streaming whereas it was included free in previously. Hence decided to stay on current plan. Something to consider for people looking to recontract.

    • Another 15GB is a lot of video at 1.5Mbps though (and does anyone actually watch TV on their phone?).

Which reminds me, the blurb says free standard definition TV, at max. 1.5mbps.

But what if I have HD Netflix? Does that mean I get up to 1.5mbps unmetered, with anything over that being metered? Or does it somehow limit the stream to 1.5mbps, forcing you to use SD?

      • Which blurb? The only blurb I can see is that mobile TV streaming will cost an extra $5 a month.

        • The small print for the TV streaming add on, directly from the deal page. It says:

"Streaming apps subject to change and subscription required. Stream Video up to 1.5Mpbs."

If you follow the link to "Full Terms" you also see:

"Enjoy movies and TV shows on your device in standard definition without stressing about data."

        • @NeBlackCat: Ah so same thing. On the new plans you need to pay $5 a month for it.

  • Merged from Optus - 30GB Data, Unlimited Calls and SMS, 300 International Mins $36/Pm Sim Only

    Optus Sim Only - $36 / month

    30GB Data
    Unlimited Calls
    Unlimited SMS
    300mins International Calls

    New and Recontracting only.
    Ends midnight tomorrow 2/9/18

    • I signed up to this but found the data speeds terrible

Was getting 1Mbps at Central Station.

Complained and ported back to Telstra.

      • Appalling! 😜

        • Damn autocorrect!!

    • Bloody hell… I only have a couple of months left on my contract I think

    • 1Mbps appealing? username does not check out!

      • +1

And in true OzBargain fashion I collected a $200 JB Voucher for being a “new” customer to Telstra

    • Hey guys, I was about to do another 365 days of Kogan 32gb. If I already have an existing data plan with optus which has unlimited netflix if I data share with this will this service also get the netflix?

  • Anyone had problem claiming the extra data? I recontracted both numbers but only getting the base 15gb data on both

    • The extra data is supposedly meant to be from the 2nd month onwards, but even then I had to live chat for them to apply it
