Hmm. I'm currently on a $40 plan that has a 10% student discount ($36). Would this plan count as an "upgrade" allowing me to avoid early termination fees, because it is a more expensive plan (even though after discount it is still $36)?

    • +11

Speak with the online chat system and let us know how it goes. Seems you could help out a lot of others with the same question.

      • +1

I just tried and got told I'd be charged an ETF even if I was upgrading to one of the other more expensive plans (like the 50gb plan).

Might try another rep later in the day.

        • +1

Speak to disconnections and say you just want to upgrade.

          They should let you.

      • -1

I just signed up 4 weeks ago on $45/ month and now this comes up. Spoke on the phone and they said they can't apply the promotion to my current plan. Only way is to cancel and incur a cancellation fee. Thanks Optus, once the 12 months expires, I will be gone!

      • I signed up for the $45 sim plan in July and just got off chat with them. I asked if I could get the new price but they said I'd have to pay an early termination fee. "Dave" however, did offer me a 10% discount so that's something. I also have the student discount applied to my account

    • Reckon you could

    • +2

They usually allow this. Just note you may have mobile TV streaming included free currently where as it's +$5/Mo on this plan. The 15GB extra may make up for lack of unlimited mobile TV though…

    • Ring them instead. Online chat don't even want to upgrade you and if they do, they'll want to give you a cancellation fee in the process.

    • +1

I had same issue that i found after placed order. Call 1300 929 949 and the lady resolve the issue right away.

    • You might actually be able to get an extra 10% off the $36

      • Nope, doesn't stack with student discount.

    • I got the 10% student discount, and I didn't ask for it. My current plan already had the discount applied, so it possibly carried over.

"I have got the plan change processed to $45 12 months SIM only plan with a 20% discount and a 10% Student Discount, which includes 30 GB data per month, Unlimited standard Talk and text with 300 Internetaional minutes."

  • Thanks OP
I am currently with Vodafone $100 Red plan which only offers 16GB interent….it sucks and not mention the frustrating network issues.

I think its time to switch to Optus

    • +1

Even without a deal like this, why on earth did you remain on that plan?? Even without 20% off and double data, you'd still be paying $45 for 15GB, which is far better value than what you're currently on.

      • +12

Bcuz i dint do my research and got a 24 months contract…..

        • +11

Don't know why people downvoted, when the person owned up to their mistake.

        • $100 with phone or only plan itself?

        • @Minh Dang:

          gotta be witha phone…
cant see how he'd sign onto a $100 24mth sim only contract

        • Yea most likely a $100 iPhone plan not just sim.

        • There is 20% discount on $125 mobile plan with 105GB on optus

    • been on vodafone for 2 wks now - seems same/better than telstra for me.
      $40 - 25gb
optus seems to have too many subscribers now.

would likely to have more network issues…
      telstra is just outpricing themselves

  • +2

Can we apply the student discount on this too?

    • I spoke to sales person on the chat, he said you can apply student discount once it this plan is approved.

      • I just spoke to one on online chat. they say its already discounted so no more discounts can be applied :/ Wierd

        • +8

I just spoke to a rep on the chat and he said it can be done after a bribe to him is setup.

        • I just spoke to a rep on chat. She seemed quite nice. Don't think she was using her real name though.

        • +8

@fuzor: An online chat rep just spoke to me, but i said that i didn't work for Optus and couldn't help.

        • I just spoke to a chat rep they said the system was down and to try later.

        • +22

I just spoke to a rep on chat. Said to ask Optus chat and stop bothering them on Telstra chat.

        • +1

Classic Optus chat. I've had the same experience. Two people on chat both told me completely opposing things once when I used chat.

        • +2

@edshays: So you used chat once, but spoke to two people - a three way hook up perhaps ?

        • +4

In Soviet Russia, chat speaks to you.

        • +1

          @MITM:

I have actually jumped on chat again today. I noticed signing up for the new plan that my wife's plan (10GB+2GB) seems to suddenly be missing the 2GB bonus. This lady on chat has no clue. She has linked me the critical info summary and says "see it's 10GB. so you must have had 8GB + 2GB total". lol

had to explain to her that critical info is the base plan and excludes bonus data. I then showed her a bill that clearly says 10GB + 2GB free data add on. Seriously do they train these people or just throw them in the deep end?

        • @edshays: Most Aussie business don't do training. You either hire someone experienced or learn on the job as you go. Its the countrywide business culture.

Your issue is especially hard if she is new. She can learn everything about what they offer but cant be expected to know superseded plans that were offered years ago.

        Sexxxxxx K • 12:37 PM
I'm afraid unfortunately none of the discount's get applied to this plan since it's already running on 20% promo offer & double data deal.

        • +1

Such a lot of nonsense. They increase the price, then artificially discount it to be able to forego their commitments.

        • +2

Is “Sexxxxxx” the chat name of the rep?! :o

        • @goraygo: nah i put those x there ;p

    • Will it be 10% off $45? Last time I did a student discount they based it off the non-discounted monthly price

    • i tried to and it gave me an invalid code error at checkout

    • +3

Im currently on the $36/month student plan (22GB Data), changed onto it in March, and my 25% employee referral discount changed over, as well as a further 10% student discount, hence making it $24.30/month, includes unlimited netflix and spotify streaming too

      • +1

Mm nice, I have similar deal with Telstra. Paying $18 P/M for 21GB, unltd calls/txt.

        • apptrack I thought I was doing well with 20gb / $29 per month with Telstra and "$1000" of calls. How on earth did you manage that?

        • +2

@dann: Signed up for the $59 P/M deal they had a while ago which included Samsung Galaxy S8, with 15GB Data, unltd calls/txts.

          24 month contract, total $1416.

Sold the S8 for $850 on eBay. Added straight to my Telstra balance.

Brings it down to $565.92/24 months, works out to be $23.58 p/m.

Added a data share sim for family, called Telstra and got that extra 5GB bonus for having more than one mobile service on same account.

          Total 20.1GB p/m (not 21GB oops).

Then added Telstra corporate discount, 20% off.

Works out to be $18.86 p/m.

        • +1

@apptrack: great work! I based mine off sim only plans; reselling devices seems to be an excellent method.

        • +1

@dann: If you do just be careful with eBay buyer scams going around :)

        • @dann: Can I ask how you got your plan, i was able to get $39 for 20gb.

        • +1

@SuperC: I'm trying to remember but I believe I contracted originally at $39 with the $10 discount then a few months later convinced them to do an additional $10 valued customer bonus. I think sometimes it comes down to luck as to when you call and what codes are available to the agents to apply to customer accounts.

      • Now THAT'S a deal.

      • +2

        25% employee referral discount

Unless you know an employee who can provide us the discount this is pointless to brag about.

  • +4

Solid offer from Optus but the network is very patchy for me. off topic - any Telstra/reseller has the similar offer around this price? I was looking at Belong as the unlimited databank is quite attractive to me.

    • same here, belong is tempting too but the data allowance is low for my usage, hmmm…

      • Even if you gift data from a half price starter pack?

      • +1

AVOID had nothing but troubles with belong there isn't a support team you can get in contact with if you have any issue.

        • +2

I got a Belong sim for my dad, it’s no longer needed and basically I found it impossible to ‘terminate’ the arrangement without asking PayPal to stop payment authority.

I called Belong’s number and irrespective of the option chosen, you can never speak with a real person. I end up leaving a (make it 2) message for a return call, it’s been 2 weeks now, still haven’t heard back from them.

          Avoid Belong.

    • I thought Boost gets a good wrap

    • In the same boat, will try to see if Telstra comes up with some matching plans.

Belong does not offer international roaming, which is a no for me.

    • Same here. In my house Telstra is patchy, Optus is non existant.

      • Have you tried a Voda prepaid sim to test out? I found Voda to have the best building penetration

        • Wife was on Voda for a while, worse than Telstra, but not quite as bad as Optus, but not by much. It is more that we are down a hill so its quite low.

        • @SuperC: Ah yep, if your phone supports WiFi calling that may be a solution.

        • @apptrack: Yep Wifi calling has been the best thing.

        • @SuperC: Soon RTS will be enabled too so you can also text/mms over Wifi

        • Does your phone have Band 28? If not, that's possibly the reason.

  • +2

It's also 20% off the higher plans:

    $44/month for 50 GB/month
    $52/month for 80GB/month

    • +1

Thank you jasswolf. I have amended the original post to include them too!

  • Thanks OP, time for me to renew my contract with Optus, been waiting for this deal.

  • +1

does anyone know what happens after 12 months? Do you continue paying $36 a month or do you lose the 20% discount and then pay $45?

    • +1

Would continue paying $36.. by then better deals will be out

      • I am pretty sure the 'bonus' data stops. So you might just end up with 15gb until you re-contract a better plan.
This is based on experience from the previous sim-only referral promo. $40 plan with 25% discount down to $30 effectively. Data was 10gb+2gb bonus. Now after 12 mths the bonus is taken away.

        • +2

I asked the same question in chat and they said it's for the life of the plan. I did find this in the terms and conditions though "Even though the contract is for 12 months, if you choose to stay on your plan for longer, the discount will apply for up to 24 months and will be forfeited if you recontract, cancel or change plans"

        • +2

@deivu: I signed up for a 12mth Sim only plan in 2017 (with 25% discount when they were running it). This expired in June, but I'm still getting the discount and extra data. So I reckon it stays.

        • @deivu:
odd that they don't put it in the critical information summary pdf

        • @Desailly:

The critical info summary seems to be for the plan without any discounts. If you open it, it says $45 15GB. So I guess any promos are separate from the plans actual T&Cs.

        • @deivu: im signed for 12 mths double data but they will as minimum honour price and data for 24 mths …so i can shop after 12 mths or stay on month by mth …

        • @garage sale:

Yep. My 12month plan from last year finished in April. I've been month to month with discounted price, and just signed up to new 12M plan today.

        • @deivu: When you're signing up it says.

20% Off Plan Fee will apply for your minimum contract term, unless you change, recontract or cancel your plan. After your minimum contract term, we have the right to remove the discount. Offer ends 2/09/18.

So I suppose it could go back up to $45/month if they want to.

    • I just did a Live Chat with Optus via the app and was informed that "You will get 20% discount off the plan and contract is for 12 months but this benefit you have will be avail for 24 months"

After 24 months, it will be back to $45 for 15GB

  • +2

Crud signed up 30 July at $45 :(

    • See how you go on chat? Same thing happened to me this time last year (I signed up to contract and a better deal came out a couple of months later).

I managed to get 20% off on chat.

    • +3

      Poor crud.

    • same, signed on 2nd of August and not even a glimpse of hope on live chat

      • Hey mate it wasn’t easy but I was able to get the 20% off on my contract. I signed up beginning of July when they first offered the double data…

I’m sure you will be fine.

        • Same boat. I signed up for $50 for 60GB a month. Would love to pay $2 more for 80GB! Wish me luck

    • Agreed my brother signed up yesterday and they said they can’t put him on the new deal.

      • Apply cooling off period and start again.

        • Don’t think there’s a cooling off period for recontracting. He was out of contract this month.
Operator wouldn’t let him or something rather.

    • +1

Under ACL you are allowed a refund and termination within 30 days of original purchase for Telco plans

Perfect deal, my contract expires this month. I ordered but the receipt still says $45 per month. I guess it'll change over once it gets approved.

    • mine too. Same boat re: $45.

    • Appears its partially in progress.

Optus usage says Ive used 17% of my 29GB

    • Same with me. Lady on chat confirmed the discount and double data is applied though.

  • +1

Time to cancel my broadband :D

    • +1

Talk to us how u would set this up with a wireless router at home.

      • Just insert the SIM card?

    • Actually, there is a 200gb wireless home broadband plan for $70pm with Optus. I'm moving to that, they say that it's limited to 12mb but they can set you up to full 4g connection (without limited speed) if you ask nicely I guess.

      • Not sure where you got that information from but I highly doubt they would increase the speed.
Im with vividwireless which is capped at 12mbps and I rarely even reach that speed due to congestion.
