  • Might want to be quick - I heard that Borders in the USA have filed for Bankruptcy!

Borders in Australia is not owned by the Borders Group in the US anymore, so I don't think they will be affected if the US operation shuts down.

      • yep that's true

    • Borders (Aus) & Angus&Robertson both went into Administration Today - tax liability & secured creditors looked after before disgruntled purchasers!

      • Yep, not related to the US problems, but probably not a good idea to order anything from them.

I was just about to order a couple of books (the Machine of Death and Bitter Seeds) online when I saw this so I decided to run the math:

Borders (assuming they even have these two books in stock in store; unlikely in my experience):
    28.95 + 41.95 = $70.90 - 30% = $46.93

    Amazon UK
11.54 + 10.94 = 22.48 GBP. 25 pounds qualifies you for free international Super Saver Delivery. 25 GBP is $40.52 (assume that I buy a pen or something to make it up to 25 GBP)

    theBookDepository.co.uk
    18.90 + 30.19 = $49.09

theBookDepository USA site (with US proxy hack.. you may or may not feel this is moral; personally I don't give a rats, I've done this for months with no problems and a clean conscience)
    17.31 + 11.99 = $29.30 US = $29.37 AUS

So still not really a bargain assuming you can stand to wait a week or two. Seriously, you have to wonder who still buys things at Borders. There's probably a very good reason the US stores closed down.

      win!!! ;)

    • when i buy some non-fiction books on amazon, the price nearly 70% off than Borders au.

    • I would have to agree, i usually find borders has everything $5 - $20 more then competitors.

Just thought i would post the coupon :)

      • they do.

Will we actually get our books?

I remember doing a bit of commercial law and this reminds me of that car dealer that went bust and kept selling cars which were no longer theirs.

In the end the customer lost out.

    • lol, borders did file for a bankruptcy protection file… dunno if the situation you stated will come true…

  • John Birmingham on the demise of Borders/A&R & other large bookstores:

My thoughts are for the employees, many of whom will be in terrible shock tonight, and indeed for a while to come (even though many would have seen it coming).

The marketplace is changing .. not even Gerry Harvey is safe - well he is, but some of his franchisees may be worried.

My local Sanity closed recently (hardly any paying customers for months), Borders are on the way … who next?

    • Mmm, great article and wise words. I don't want to sound like I don't care about people losing their jobs but I don't care about Borders and I have no sympathy for people bemoaning the loss of shops which they a) haven't used personally for years b) are rendered almost entirely obsolete by competitors providing a better service at a better price. In my local town there are precious few book stores at it is, the one I still visit is an independent retailers that stocks good new and second-hand books, knows his books and has been in business for 30 years.

I own a kindle btw; great device but I will always buy paper when I can. Because nothing shows you've arrived in life like a wall-sized bookshelf full of great books ;-)

    • who next?

many stores that could be (beaten)/(have competition) by online stores

basically in this modern day world, eBooks are the thing, iTunes for music

    • Unfortunately there are 3 magazines I read which I cannot buy from anywhere else. Even borders doesn't have them in stock sometimes.

I do not want to subscribe to these magazines, so if borders closes I can't get the magazines :(

I've just worked out what Borders "VIP" must stand for:

    Very Inflated Prices.
