[VIC] Free a Google Home Mini Or a Pie at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Google Pie Pop-Up Shop [Melbourne]

1180

Update - It's the Last chance to get a Google Home Mini this weekend. The stall will close before the kick off time.

Lucky Melbourne mates.. Good Luck
(Saturday 11th Aug & Sunday 12th Aug)

From Ausdroid Site :

Google will have a pop-up Pie shop at the MCG tomorrow giving away Google Home Mini’s and Pies

Google is quickly moving from Oreo to Pie, with Google Australia leading the charge with a new pop-up event happening in Melbourne over the weekend. Google is opening a pop-up ‘Pie’ shop at the MCG tomorrow where you can grab yourself either a delicious Pie, or a Google Home Mini.

The MCG will play host to two AFL games this weekend, with the Hawthorn Hawks playing the Geelong Cats on Saturday and Melbourne playing the Sydney Swans.

The pop-up Pie shop is reminiscent of Google’s pop-up Donut shops which popped up around the US in the wake of the launch of the Google Home Mini last year and it appears the setup is similar. Just like at the Donut pop-up shops, you simply have to select two questions from a list, then ask Google Home Mini on display. Once Google Home Mini answers a box will drop out with either a delicious pie, or a Google Home Mini!

    Holy! Why not Sydney??? Nooo

    • +12

Because Sydney sucks balls, friend. It is known.

  • +6

Somewhat suspicious at Google desperation at giving these things away. It's going to report on my ozB purchases isn't it?

    https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/facebook/001/002/514/48b…

    • +6

Long term gains. These things probably cost little, yet Google will make it's money from them just laying around your house.

Honestly a smart move to get a good foothold in countries that aren't already dominated by Amazon

      • +10

Just laying around your house, listening to everything you say, sending the data back home to Google.

George Orwell would not be happy.

        • I doubt I've ever said anything worth listening to in my life

        • You mean just like billions of Android phones already could do, from your pocket?

    • Didn't Huckabee Sanders' kid order some batman merch using Amazon Echo?

  • +3

If you got the pie you would be pretty upset.

    • +19

      That's unaustrailian

      • +2

If it's free, you're the product.

        • Soylent Pies?

    • +5

I'd rather have the pie than the google machine. All that does is sell marketing information to Google. If they want my information, they should be paying me!!

On the other hand, a pie has only ever done right by me… except for this one time when I almost shat myself at the Easter Show.

      • +1

I actually have got around $40 for last 3 months leaving reviews and doing surveys from Google Opinion Rewars app. Don't know how to spend them anyway

        • Movie hire?

        • Make money out of it by selling a youtube premium family subscription to ozbargainers.

        • Surely you have access to the app even if you don't have the godforsaken devil machine?

        • +2

Pokemon GO coins is how I spend mine

      • ill take it off your hands

    • +10

Google minis are generally on sale for around $40, at the MCG they charge about that for a pie so not bad at all.

  • +1

Is it random? Or do I need to be smart to select the right answer?

  • +7

I'm not fighting 100K other people for a 50/50 shot at getting a $39 device.

    • +7

And half of them would be Collingwood supporters!!!

          hashtag subtletyisunderrated

        • Good to see some Collingwood folk frequenting the forums!

          'Carn the pies!

        • @dm01: And hello to their literate friends typing for them :)

  • +6

I thought most of ozbargainers would have these mini's setting next to their eneloop collection ?

    • +2

yes and it’s still in the box …both eneloop and mini

      • +2

        Guaranteed to increase in value

      • Batteries degrade over time…

It's not a bargain if you don't use them.

    • +1

      I don't like ads.

  • +1

Please report back if you go tomorrow :)

  • +5

Google want your info hence why they are giving them away. Pie or mini. They dont care. As long as they can get you connected its targeted marketing research for them.

    • +9

Its not about info, its eco system. If they give you a mini, then your more likely to buy a google home or google max or chromecast devices.

      Its called marketing

      • I would guess Google is more interested in a stream of revenue from your monthly GPM/YT subscription.

        • I did cancel my spotify for GPM/YT as worked out better for multiple minis around the house, and ad free you tube

      • Google don't care about selling you hardware..They would give it to you if they could. They just want to serve you targeted advertising.

    • +6

facebook give you nothing material for your info, so at least google are rewarding you for it with material goods …. pie or a mini.

    • +1

You make it seem like a bad thing.
They will get your info regardless, at least you get something from them, unlike Facebook.

This is win win for everyone

      • +3

They will get your info regardless

No they won't but have fun surrendering all your info and losing money because you imagined they were all powerful magicians.

        • +1

Unless you're not using any Google products, they're collecting info from you. No Google maps, no search, no Android, no Gmail etc.

It's been there since last Friday. My brother and I went there for Richmond and Geelong. I got a pie. He got a mini. We didn't know what the mini was, so he gave it to me.
On Sunday, I got off at Jolimont to go to Richmond station. The Demons and Suns were on, so I tried again. Just a pie.
It's random. Someone drops a box down a chute. I saw their hands. There were quite a few minis. Seemed to be one out of 10 or 15. This week is the last week they said.
There was a big queue. But moved quickly. No one knew what they were queuing for. Us included. Baa baa baa.

    • +3

How can people not know what they are, tho given that it is Melb

      • Eddie Betts tried to tell me what they were on tv once. More that we didn't know what the point of one was. I've had it for a week. Still haven't figured out the point.

        • +3

          ask it!

        • +4

if only the company that makes the device had some kind of service where you could ask it for information and it could return millions of search results that might educate you with a click of a button…

they could even call it google search or something.

whoever comes up with this idea would be rich

    • +1

Probably thought it was a white pie

Coming to ebay soon from melb area google mini with bite marks

    • I saw it last week and ignored it because I thought it was a normal pie shop :( could have had a free lunch.

  • +4

One out of 10-15 is not 50/50. I’m not going :) Thanks for sharing your experience.

    • Seemed a pretty rough guestimate.
      Might be good odds

  • Anyone know when it's opening up?
Just when the footys on? Or can I go earlier and hopefully avoid the crowd

    • +2

Join the crowd of others all avoiding the crowd.

      • +4

sleep out overnight ….you can’t loose, get a pie for breakfast or a mini …..

google are a bunch of wimps …they should have set up outside an apple shop or better still in federation square where apple wants to build their flagship store …

    • +1

They were open 2 hours before the game. Then I was going back to the train when I heard the quarter time siren and they had packed up.

But, can't go wrong with a free (don't pay $5 or whatever for the same thing in the ground), slightly less that almost warm meat pie.

  • -1

Can one try to win the mini more than once ie can you keep lining up to try?

    • +2

You get a stamp so you could rub it off but they about 12 staff on so they might recognise you!

      • +2

Reversible jacket… check. Sunglasses…. check. Pocket-sized hand sanitizer… check. Hey Google, here I come.

      • Use a wet wipe - the one with micellar water.

  • Only open during footy games?

  • +7

Here now, they have the pop up outside of gate 3. Heaps of people walking around with home minis….and pies!
Edit- I got one!!! So awesome! Seemed to be around 1 in every 5 or so that got a mini.

    • +1

      Wow :)

    • Lucky. Got there half time and closed already

  • what flavor of the pie I wonder?

  • +1

    Rather have a Raspberry pi

  • +2

I love the wording of the title, as though the minis and pies are in captivity and you are helping them escape.

  • +1

So they can spy on you lol

    • +6

So they can s'pie on you

      • it's pie or its spy

        • I s'pose you have a point.

  • -1

Is this pop up shop going to be there tomorrow?

  • +5

    Yes

The shop opens at 11 am & close at game time if you want to head down tomorrow for the Melbourne vs Sydney Swans game.

  • +5

Yep, got a x2 pies and a Mini at the Rich Vs Cats game. AWESOME!!

    • +2

I saw some people were disappointed with their minis. Luckily, if you went around the side, they were handing out MORE PIES!!!

      • That's what they told me, amazing customer service. Those people were paid well for the day. You can tell. So lovely!!

  • -1

Is it outside or inside MCG? As in would you need tickets to get in?

    • +1

No, free for all outside gate 3.

  • +3

    this is how skynet begins.

  • +2

Just got a Pie with $29 off voucher. Thanks google.

    • Voucher? mean no more Google Home Mini?

  • No, I got one. If you don't get a home mini, you get a pie with a $29 voucher.

    • My bad, this is in response to comment above. ^

  • +2

Got a Google mini… Was allowed to get a pie as well… Thanks OP! 😊

  • I think the intetesting point here is that the Google Home Mini is only worth the value of a third rate pie.

    • Might of been a Smart pie?

  • Not too sure if it’s dependent on questions. Me and my so got a mini each and we both asked the same question. We might have just lucked out i guess

    • I don't think it's dependent on the questions. The questions are just for fun. If you notice in the shop, there are boxes on a tray going in circles above. Once you've asked your question, I'm pretty sure one of those boxes drops and it's just a matter of luck.

      • +1

If you looked up the chute, you could see a pair of hands drop the box down the chute. So, even the person dropping the box didn't know what they were giving.

  • +1

Picked up a home mini, also have a $29 off code if anyone wants it send me a message. Can't remember what questions we asked, but it seemed most groups of people had at least one person winning. Went out the back and got a pasty. Winning

    • Could you send the discount code to jv, please?

      • what is JV?

        • Question should be "Who" is JV ?
This may help & JV ;)

        • @Being Askhole: I guess the question really related to why would someone request a code on another persons behalf? Not a problem though. I will send it over

EDit: bigger question, how do I PM someone?

        • @itshammer: dm01 was kidding mate :)
