  • How many composite inputs?

    • VGA input x 1
      HDMI x 2
      Component x 2
      S-Video x 1

Dunno if that answers your question…
      Component is 1xVideo 2xAudio
Composite is 3xVideo if I recall correctly.

      So it might be none?

      • Damn it, other way round!

      • Composite is 1 x Video (Yellow plug)
Component is 3 x Video (often coloured Red/Green/Blue)

I doubt that ANY TV wouldn't have a Composite connection.

    • Only the 1 RCA (Yellow/Red/White) input from memory, as is the case on most TV's

I use a $5 RCA switcher to connect multiple devices, but it means getting up every now and then, then I still back down and go off the diet again.. lol

      • Only the 1 RCA (Yellow/Red/White)

        That is called Composite video.

RCA is the type of plug you use (Component also uses RCA)

    • No single reply from the rep?

What for, your question was answered by the members above who replied to you?

Seriously, how many SD devices would you wanna connect to a HDTV anyway? ;)

        • Sat receiver and VCR. So two.

Only aml276 said 1 "from memory". The rest is just a discussion on what composite is.

it's interesting how the rep ignored the whole discussion though. He jumped straight on other questions.

        • @Sharp, you could input your sat to your VCR & daisy-chain it that way! That's if either or both don't have component or svideo outputs! ;)

  • $570 is an amazing price for a Full-HD 42" LCD with 5 years extended warranty I must say. Never heard of the site, and vaguely remember hearing something neutral about the brand.

Might be an amazing TV, otherwise just an amazing deal. Would love to see how this pan's out.

      Hi Zelka,
With regards to the TV - their Full HD units are the better "no name brand" options on the market. The picture quality is very very good, particularly considering the price point. They are no Samsung, but considering their price point, they are still a great option.

      • +1

They are no Samsung, but considering their price point, they are still a great option.

Great to see such honesty from a rep!

Have just passed this deal onto a friend.

      • Thanks for the honesty and the info!

    • +2

The best 'no-name' TV I've ever owned. I have two Vivos and love 'em. Comparable to a Toshiba or LG.

      • -1

"no-name"? They have a name, just not a "mainstream" brand. I also have this model as my main TV and am considering another for the spare room.

        • +4

          stop trolling for arguments

        • pfft, semantics. everyone knows that no-name means not reputable or a common household brand.

      • -1

        Thanks wolf ;)

Must admit though, I use semantics to troll too when I'm in the mood. haha

  • Bought my grandparents a 32" vivo from DSE about a year ago i think… still holding up, not a bad little TV.

  • Do these have Samsung panels inside?

    • Hi Bargainaholic,

Our account manager at Vivo has indicated that they are Samsung panels, but she wanted to confirm absolutely 100% with the import manager, who is unavailable this afternoon. She has emailed him and will get back to us as soon as possible.

For now, we can't absolutely confirm or deny until we have further information from Vivo. To be confirmed.

      • +1

i have not heard anything bad about vivo and this is an amazing price even if it only last 5 years but there is no way this is a samsung panel as they do not make 42 inch panels at all its the way they cut their glass and have their machines tooled they only have 40 or 46 no 42.

        • +1

Really? So what panel is in my 42" Samsung TV?

  • I bought the 47" Vivo Full HD LCD from DSE a few months ago, very very happy with it!

    • 'ow much may I ask?

      • $699 for the TV + $50 for extra 2 years warranty (total 3 years)

  • For those who are thinking of getting one, there are some comments about this unit on this whirlpool thread, which has some caveats about picture quality with certain sources / SD content. Not saying this is a bad deal (I think the price is great for a 42" full HD LCD unit) but just to be informed about what you're getting, based on feedback from people who have used/owned one of these specific models.

  • $548 at dick smiths? Is this the same model? (LTV42FHD)

    • Yes, same model. DSE price is excluding delivery.

  • Free Nationwide shipping and an extended 5 year warranty for only $70 makes this deal amazing.

I'm just a little skeptical about the brand and the issues people have had with SD sources.

I might just wait for a Panasonic or Samsung around ~$700.

      website still says $548?

    • +1

      40” is 499 at dse
42” is 548 hence this deal is cheaper

  • pretty good for a 42"

    • Full HD as well remember :)

  • anyone know the refresh rate on this TV? 50 or 100hz?

    • Some information on refresh rates if you are interested.
I dont know about the TV but i can say that there is no such thing as a 50 or 100hz LCD display.

All LCD screens refresh at 60hz, regardless of what the manufacturer says and nothing you watch is actually filmed in a high refresh rate, filming is done at 25hz.

The high refresh rates advertised are there because the TV looks at the first frame and the next frame and then guesses what images should be shown to you, it then creates entirely new images and inserts them between the ones being broadcast.

I have written that from memory, there was a good website that explained how the high 'refresh rates' work but at the moment i cannot find it.

    • If it's the same one as DSE (codes are different, but it looks like eljo have accidentally put in the code for the 26") then it's 50.

      • 40" is 499 at dse
42" is 548 hence this deal is cheaper

  • Any info about energy star? How many stars this TV have?

  • Costco have a 42" Samsung plasma for $579.99, not full HD though.

    • Plus whatever the membership fee is ($60 iirc?)

Vivo are, I'm almost certain, Samsung panels anyway. Same TV with a different facade.

      • +1

Absolutely not. Two TV's using the same brand panel does not mean they are the same.

Firstly, Samsung are the worlds largest LCD/Plasma manufacturer followed by LG.Display. Samsung sell panels to an endless amount of companies including these low-tier operators. This TV is unlikely a Vivo, but just a unit that Vivo felt they were happy to slap their brand on. Don't forget there are several different grades of panels, and you can bet these would be the cheapest possible ons around.

To give you an analogy, it's not like two different branded cars using the same engine. If it had to be anything, it would be that they were using the same tyres.

The real guts of this TV lies in the electronics and the image processing (thus the cause of scaling issues on SD content). I'm not saying it's a rubbish TV, but you cannot compare it to a Samsung. I'm trying to say, don't feel like you're being a smart consumer because you're buying the same TV just with a different shell. It's a very different beast.

Just keep that in mind, that's all. This TV is still selling for an exceptional price and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it at this price point. You're not getting a $1200 Samsung here, but that's obvious and probably doesn't need to be stated any more :)

        Cheers

      • Ashlea - The TV at Costco is not Full HD. It would be the Samsung PS42C451, and it is a very different TV to the one we have a on sale. HD v Full HD. Plasma v LCD.

        • +1

Yeah, I'm on your side. :P Your deal is great and I'd definitely buy one if I needed another TV :P

  • Fantastic deal!
The extended warranty is the icing on the cake - You'd be pretty mad not to take it up for an extra $70 = 6 years of headache free viewing. I'd love to put this baby in my bedroom but I'm afraid she will take up all the space!

    • +1

They do :( Had 42" in my room at my old place and it's just a little too much in your average sized bedroom.

    • Wolfenator, it's a 5 year warranty in total, rather than 6.

Wall mounting it may get it up out of the way :-)

I always get confused whether Newcastle is considered Metro or Rural as it has a fairly high population density and location. If ordering this tv, is it free delivery to Newcastle or $69.95 which would make Dick Smith imo a better option because of ease of access.

    • Yeah, it's hard to tell…some companies deem it regional & charge more, some comprehend that Newy is a significant hub & are happy to ship here for metro rates! I just put my postcode in & see how the shipping turns out these days before I order anything! :)

Full HD, 42'' LCD, 5 year warranty? What's there not to like?

Wish I had an excuse to buy one!

  • +1

Extended warranty! How can I lose?

    • +2

Please tell me you're all joking about extended warranties on a set that costs less than $499? By the time the standard warranty runs out, the set will be almost worthless, as is the nature of depreciation on flat panels. It is not at all cost effective to buy extended warranties.

      • +1

The standard warranty is 1 year. To buy a new set at that time will still cost around the same, if not more. Yes the features will have improved (in theory), but you could save having to splash out to get a whole new set just by spending a little extra on your perfectly good set now. Besides, if the TV breaks in 3-4 years they would be replacing it with an equivalent set for the time, not exactly the same as you are buying today… Thus you would effectively be getting your next TV for $69.95?

Extended warranties on electrical equipment are always worth considering, as long as it's priced at no more than about 20-25% of the total value of the product.

        • 10% is my cutoff for big ticket items & extended warranty; but it's gotta be manufacturer's, not 3rd party!

The standard warranty is 1 year. To buy a new set at that time will still cost around the same, if not more.

Seriously dude, could you have bought this set for this price at this time last year??? Of course not…stuff gets cheaper & better every few months nowadays!!! You've got a good deal at a good price here, don't embarrass yourself by trying to 'upsize' people with oversell on unneccessary extended warranty for a sub $500 set!!!

        • +2

          Stewballs,

In fairness, if you read the very next sentence after your quote, it says "Yes the features will have improved…".

Your 10% cut off is fine. In fact, it is extremely common. Other people however have a cut off at 20-25%. All i said was that until that 20-25% point, warranties are worth considering.
There are a lot of people out there that like the peace of mind of extended warranties and are happy to part with their hard earned to gain it.
Having said that, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. But so is everyone else, and when you look at the rest of the thread, clearly a lot of people think $69.95 for 5 years peace of mind is a worthy investment.

        • but it’s gotta be manufacturer’s, not 3rd party!

Chouce (i think) did a review on the claim process of extended warranties. They looked at the ease of claims, what was rejected and how hard you had to fight to get warranty when they initially said 'no'

The manufacturers ended up being worse than third party offerings.

        • @Anthony,

I don't think I've seen that one, but I do recall Choice stating that many third party 'warranty' (I use this term loosely as we all know these are just insurance policies) providers were significantly lacking in what they actually covered for many items. Indeed, their list of exclusions was pretty much a get out of gaol free card for most things that may go wrong…I'm too lazy to google a link on that one, perhaps someone better read than me knows it offhand. Some were of course better than others IIRC.

I've had personal & professional dealings in the past with some of these 'warranty' companies, and I can only tell you that IME a manufacturer's extended warranty is light years ahead of most insurance companies both in terms of inclusions/coverage & simplicity of claims! Just my experience, yours may be different…is it?

        • Of course not…stuff gets cheaper & better every few months nowadays!!!

Not everything gets cheaper, things do increase in price or the price stays the same and extra features are added.

Look at the iphone, has the gotten cheaper over time? No

The first iphone sold for $600 and $500 depending on model.
The iphone 4 is selling for $600 and $700.
Yes, over time it has INCREASED in price.

But over time the components have decreased in price, memory costs much less now than it did in 2007 and so would most of the components inside the phone.

        • Just my experience, yours may be different…is it?

I have never purchased extended warranty and probably never will.

My credit card offers free extended warranty on all purchased made on it. But i have never used it so i cannot say how good or bad it is.

If something i have breaks out of the warranty period i will try statutory warranty and if that does not work i will buy a new model.
The money i have saved on not buying warranty and the extra money i have from keeping the money in a bank account should mean buying a replacement will be close to "free".

I have only had 1 new item break and that was within the warranty period. I hope it stays that way :)

I do not know how extended warranty works but if they work on a pro-rata basis then there really is no point in them.
If your TV breaks 4.5 years into a 5 year warranty and the warranty is a pro-rata based system then you will end up paying most of the cost of a new tv from your own pocket.

        • @anthony,

We're talking about TVs dude, they have gotten cheaper & better, even the OP agreed!

The iPhone is a specious example, the reason for its high price is purely demand driven; and that is underpinned by marketing hype & some fanboi delusion of 'lifestyle', end of story!

Apple is not immune to market forces, don't kid yourself about the godlike Jobs. Take my 1st gen ipod touch 16gb, paid over $500 (on sale) a few years ago for it when they were all the rage, now I can buy the top of the range 64gb from Apple themselves for under $400 (on any day of the week) with far more features, unless my maths have failed me that's cheaper!!! :p

Watch prices drop on the iphone, like they did with the ipod touch, once the wallys find the next big 'something new' to latch on to! ;)

        • man it's worth it. if this set bonks out after 13 months on a standard warranty, then you're monumentally screwed and can pretty much throw it on the nature strip and cry away you didn't spend an additional $70 for warranty.

      • +1

        @jmg146,

Yes, I read that sentence, and if you look carefully you'll see I agree with that! However, you said, and I'll quote again "To buy a new set at that time will still cost around the same, if not more". Unless you have a crystal ball telling you what the market is going to do then I can't see how you can make this comment with a straight face; and based on anecdotal & empirical evidence of the last few years it would most likely be an outright lie!

Are you also aware that statutory warranty supercedes manufacturer & retailer warranty? If there is an expectation that a product will last for a significant period beyond say, 12 months (as you would expect any TV to do), then regardless of the ticketed 'warranty' you are protected by the law for the period of time that is reasonable for that product.

Choice magazine have done some extensive write-ups on extended warranty, and found that for most purposes they are a complete waste of time and money for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being my previous statement.

The fact that a lot of people get duped into buying them doesn't make them any more worthwhile, just more profitable for the retailer!

        • Agreed they are a waste. I spent nearly $6k on my Sony 86cm HD set back in 2002, didn't get any extended warranty, and it's still going strong today.

        • hmm… i don't suppose anyone would be able to tell you definitively what that reasonable period of time would be for a product like this tv? 'greater than 12 months' could range from (for example) 13 months through to 13 years.

if you can be confident that you could claim statutory warranty within the timeframe for which extended warranties are offered (in this case, and i suppose quite typically, up to 5 years), then yes the extended warranty is not worthwhile. without this confidence, extended warranties are at least worth considering, no?

if you have any more information about actual claims on statutory warranty grounds i for one would be interested to learn more. the only thing i'm aware of related to this is the warranty on mobile phones being upped to 24 months in line with the length of contracts that they're typically tied to. that situation is a lot more clear cut that a TV set…

        • @quop,

          Here's a nice link FYI:
          http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/lcdtv/lcdtv-misconceptions.s…

Of course many variables apply, but a reasonable person would expect a TV to last 3-5 years at the very least; and I don't reckon you'd have too much trouble getting your local FT to agree…I know for sure it's in the NSW act, you'll need to check QLD! ;)

I'm with anthony, it will be extremely unusual circumstances that see me buying extended 'warranty' in the foreseeable future…and a chilly day in Hades before I did so for a $499 TV! ;)

Don't get me wrong, as you've seen I've +'d this deal…I think this is a great buy, and I wouldn't anticipate any problems with it; but with regard to needing to extend warranty, my experience with electronic appliances is that if something's gonna go wrong, it will mostly do so not just within 12mths, but usually 3! :)

Sorry, I can't help you with the mobile ph stuff, talk to your local FT though, they'll at least tell you where you stand!

        • @stewballs, the concept of being able to claim under statutory warranty past the manufacturer's express warranty is a relatively 'new' thing for me so was just curious to how it would work in practice, and always a bit wary of relying on things that aren't spelt out, especially if you're the underdog (pleb consumer vs. big corporate).

thanks for the link - while i can appreciate that the LCD panel may well last decades under typical use, there are plenty of other components of a TV that could 'break', and then there's always murphy's law :p but yeah i can now better understand now where you (and anthony) are coming from about not getting extended warranties.

and i wasn't asking for help about mobile phones - i only brought it up as an example of something i'm aware of where the industry has changed (extending the warranty from 12 to 24 months) in line with consumer expectations that a phone at least last as long as the contract period.
