  • I don't look at these items everyday… but that price for those features seems AWESOME!
At $48, you seriously can't go wrong.

  • I must say I laughed when I saw the video playback formats were listed as "…VOB, most DivX and more". More what? I looked on the Strong website, and it's been copied from there. Amusing. Anyhow, they point to their .pdf for the full feature list and .mkv is listed in the supported playback formats. I'd be interested if anyone knows what sore of bitrate this box supports? Full HD at reasonably high bitrate would be awesome, however it is unfortunate there is no network connectivity. Seems a good deal at the pricepoint however. http://www.strong.com.au/Brochures/SRT%205428%20Brochure-2.p…

    • I have the Strong 5425 and the highest bitrate MKV file I tried was a 1280 x 720 video (avg bitrate 5Mbps - peaks at 13Mbps).

  • Would HN match this price since they own the stores ???

  • +1

Great price! This is cheapo pricing for a top quality STB, I've had a Strong SD STB for years & it's never missed a beat! :)

    • agreed, good brand. They are called STRONG for a reason!

  • I have a similar Strong unit with a hard drive… it's great. Whenever my Samsung TV has reception issues I cut over to the PVR, which ALWAYS has a stronger signal. I'd have to say the interface isn't the best but the nuts and bolts of these things are as their brand suggests.

  • It doesn't look like HN stock them according to their website…

  • I mean Nice price!!!

    • can confirm upper mt gravatt has a whole pile in a basket~ 48 bux

wouldn't let me edit my old post …

  • Strongs have performed well as satellite RXs, but may pass this one and wait for the ALdi Vivid (2 weeks back sellout) to appear agin as it claims to do MKV 1080i files.

  • Would Clive Peeters price match this instore even though this price is a web special? If they do ill call down tomorrow

    • You can buy online and pick up in store.

    • No need for that order-online-pickup-in-store rigmarole in Hobart. I rang, they had two, mine for $48 without asking. Too easy, just like they say.

There's something odd with Strong's firmware update though. There's supposedly a new version on www.strong.com.au but it doesn't update mine beyond their October 2010 release.

  • Is this strong my last set top box broke!

    • so strong it could take sledge hammer. try it!

  • hows this one compared to the lenoxx one?

  • My set top box is Weak :(

  • It's been at that price for awhile, maybe they are trying to get rid of stock.

    • +1

Clive Peeters who are owned by Harvey Norman may occasionally have a loss leader. However, Gerry Harvey has not become a billionaire by handing out to all the punters lots of bargains. Expect for every bargain that you may buy at Clive Peeters lots of punters will pay over the odds for everything else. Bargains here, forget about it.

  • It makes for an excellent DSB and PVR at this price, with very capable media playback.

  • When they say "you can connect additional Hard Drives up to a total of 1TB", does that mean a 2TB HDD will not work with this?

    • er, yes.

  • anyone know if this plays 1080 H264 mkvs?

  • Anyone updated the firmware to the January version?

  • Back to $79 now…

  • I bought this STB after it was mentioned in the OLIN HVBTR4800 Higf-Def Set Top Box PVR bargain.
I've had a few issues & plan to contact Strong support soon, but thought I'd mention here as a FYI
Using the latest Jan 2011 firmware update
-> issues might be due to a bad batch as theorised on Whirlpool
-> or some incompatibility with a WD Home 1TB FAT32 usb2 HDD 3.5" ac powered

    Issues

    • Long standby to viewing time (~23sec)
    • Using EPG & switching to other channel doesn't show the EPG for new channel from the current time
-> Sometimes shows from midnight that morning or night
    • Refuses to record to USB HDD sometimes (doesn't wake it up, or wait for it to wake up?)
-> Meaning scheduling record times is useless, can't be trusted
    • Says USB is invalid regularly (thought due to HDD sleep/wake up), but sometimes just after using a minute ago
-> Requires reinserting usb cable after power off/on HDD
    • MOV mpeg4 & DVD rips (VOB) seem to get their audio out of sync with video after 40min or so
-> restarting or rebooting doesn't seem to help

Issues (only happened 1 time so far)

    • Using instant REC seems to randomly stop
-> Seen once, had 3 recordings after trying to restart when noticed not working (15, 4 & 11min -> random stopping?)
    • Lost all network 7 channels once for no reason
-> had to rescan to fix
    • A 1hr recording was corrupted midway somehow, was stored as a 2GB & 700MB file, 3/4 through first file was broken
-> Playing would skip to the next (completely different) recording
-> Could play 700MB file on computer with VLC or MPC, but they both refused to even start playing the 2GB file

    Missing features (nice to have)

    • No skip ad button (30sec block)
    • How to jump to 3/4 way through a 3hr recording?
-> Other than FF at 32x speed (sucks when you forget to stop FF & have to do it again because it hit the end)

BTW, I also bought via web with in-store pick-up on last day of sale, but when told it arrived 3-4 days later, they had a pallet full on display for the $48 (so called web only price)!! If I had known that I would of just bought it in-store.
