      32gb ouch….

    • +3

I'm still not paying 400 bucks for a damn phone, and an older one at that.

But that nearly 200 dollar difference is huge, especially since everything nowadays can be done online… movies/shows through Netflix/Stan/Foxtel even, photos can be backed up online, music can be streamed through Spotify/YouTube, and so on. I don't think I'd need any more than a 32gb in an ideal setting, I could easily get by with 16gb to be entirely honest.

This comment deserves all the up votes tbh.

Edit: Use PENNY5 to get it for 398.95, even better. I mean, it's still 400 bucks for an older phone, but, you know.

      • Keep in mind that the OS uses 8GB of storage, then apps even more, many standard apps (Chrome, fb, messenger, maps, instagram) are aproaching 500MB alone.

Running latest Android with a modest amount of updated apps would fill a 16GB phone, it would be painfully slow.

        • +1

There is no way Oreo uses 8gb, surely.

Other than that, I know I'm apparently the odd one out but I still use m.facebook, much more reliable than Messenger, same for maps, and if I used Insta I'd use it there too, but again, that's just me, you're 100% right though that someone who uses these apps would be a bit limited.

        • @TheDukeOfNukem: oreo is less than 2gb download, the os will reserve some flash so that it can do upgrades and roll backs rather than people completely fill it up and then it has trouble downloading and updating with roll back capability, some os essentials are expanded so they load faster, but not to “8gb” …

slow down with only 32gb flash is a statement that doesn’t have a technical explanation….ram will determine speed as the apps load from flash into ram to run faster and sometimes also decompress, and how many apps you have open eats into your available ram and running out of ram will slow things down ….

i find 32gb very useable , my phone is 64gb but gb as i clean up and only keep photos i really want, and get rid of apps i don’t use , nothing worse than apps yu don’t need that still load and track or use your data for updates …..

just a matter of house keeping, which also makes it easier to find stuff.
chrome is 246mb, maps is 267mb, netflix 73mb, whatsapp is 90mb, and lots of std apps are included in space android reserves as part of the os …..google doesn’t let you run without them or they can’t collect info …..

        • @garage sale: I don't even update Chrome tbh, or really anything that doesn't force it. I disable any app I don't use too, not for better RAM performance or storage requirements, but because I'm a fickle bitch and want as little icons on my phone as possible.

For me, the built in camera app works better than Google Camera / Photos so there's a bit more space saved for me too.

      • I'm still not paying 400 bucks for a damn phone

I'm interested to know how much you spent on yours and how old it is? (And what it is lol)

        • Price: 130.
          Release: Dec 2016
Purchase: Dec 2017 (my Nexus 5 was on the way out and I finally budged and upgraded)
          Phone: LeEco Le S3 X626
          Specs: https://www.phonemore.com/leeco-le-s3-x626-32gb/specs/3737

Though to be entirely honest, most of this year I've been using my Nokia 3310 (40 bucks w/10 credit - Dec 2017), and for the last month or so my BlackBerry Bold 9900 (25 bucks, used though). The BB is absolutely fantastic, could not recommend more.

        • @TheDukeOfNukem:

my Nexus 5 was on the way out and I finally budged and upgraded

So how much was your Nexus 5?

Putting that aside, that phone is good value. It's always stuck on the Android it comes with, and the specs aren't awesome but its $130 lol

        • -1

@pennypincher98 "Specs aren't awesome", has same amount of RAM, more cores in the processor, and the camera has a higher number of megapixels. The bulk of that was mumbo jumbo to me, I won't lie, but from what I can tell, it's the better phone compared to the Pixel. Only difference is the screen is slightly lower res (1080v1440) and the battery is a couple hundred mAh lower. As for being stuck with the OS version it came with, well, if updating all my phones through the years has taught me anything, it's that in the long run, I'll wish I didn't do it (RIP iPhone 4S, you are gone but not forgotten).

The Nexus was bought when the phone was about 6 months old through Kogan, I think I paid about 260 for it then, 16gb model, and that was a ridiculously high amount to me even then, when I got it I said the damn thing had better last me at least until 2017 and the screen finally got cracked after it fell from my pocket on the way to work very late 2017, was still going strong otherwise. Great little phone, really.

        • @TheDukeOfNukem: > has more cores in the processor

Like an Atom processor has twice as many cores as an i7?? The processor in the phone is far from great, but it's good for the price. It's certainly not better than the Pixel and to kid yourself or anyone else otherwise is laughable.

$260 is "ridiculously high" for a phone like the Nexus 5? Wow.

I can tell you don't use your phone the way most people do otherwise you would see the difference. To you a 'dumb' phone and a smartphone do the same things which isn't a bad way to be but I am not constantly carrying a tablet or something with me (in fact I don't even own one).

        • @pennypincher98: Like I said dude, a lot of it is mumbo jumbo to me. But so long as you know dude, what's the difference? Doesn't more cores mean it's got more power or whatever? I'm legit an idiot when it comes to stuff like this. I buy my game console every 5 years and I know it's better than the last one, I don't know diddly dick about what goes into them to be honest.

I don't own a tablet either. I know a lot of people use their phones more than me, but like, here's what I'd do on an average day with my phone. Make and take a few calls / shoot off a few texts, take some photos of my kid, play some games (just finished Super Mario Land yet again while on the toilet), go on the interwebs, maybe listen to a few songs on Spotify or whatever if I feel so inclined, and call it a day. Like that's an average day to me, by no means a power user, no.

        • @TheDukeOfNukem:

Doesn't more cores mean it's got more power or whatever?

Well yes all other things remaining the same 8 cores are better than 4 which are better than 2.
The difference (or one of) is the actual speed of the cores - in the Atom vs i7 example - the atom is 1.92Ghz. the i7 is 3.5Ghz. Cache comes into it also but in a nutshell, more cores can deliver more productivity but whether this productivity leads to more power depends on speed.

        • @pennypincher98: So, being able to do more things, doesn't necessarily mean it will do any of them better then? In like super basic dumb people terms.

        • @TheDukeOfNukem: Basically, you would be able to do more things slower than you can do less things faster if that makes sense.

However if you are looking at similar speeds (eg 7th Gen vs 8th Gen Intel cores) you will see a massive improvement if you double the cores.

Then there's overclocking, but that's a whole different kettle of fish…

        • +1

@TheDukeOfNukem: Not really, no. The Helio X20 is weaker than midrange Snapdragon 625/630, and hotter i.e will throttle the CPU more frequently. Not all CPUs are equal, for example the Atom is severely weaker than the Intel i7 in terms of IPC (instructions per clock), so even if you throttle down the i7 to run at same clock it's still leagues faster. Same thing with Mediatek vs Snapdragon, Mediatek always boast higher clock but their CPU still lags behind Snapdragon running SLOWER clock. The latest/best Helio P60 (2Ghz) is around SD 660 (1.85Ghz), and they are both still slightly slower than the SD 821 in the OG Pixel. Qualcomm has SD 670, 710, 835 and 845 on higher leagues.

MP doesn't make good camera, hence why 90% of flagship phone camera still uses 13MP main shooter (except say Huawei P20 Pro with its 40MP main shooter) and takes photos leagues above big MP camera Oppos. One big reason why Oppo wins in China or India, is because the general mass assume bigger MP makes bigger camera. You get like 25MP selfie camera for cheap Oppo ($300-$400 range), people think it beats say Pixel 2 8MP selfie camera by 3 times, yes? Very wrong. I have yet to see any Oppo phone camera can compete with Pixel 2, even the new Find X.

          @pennypincher98:

I've learned a lot today tbh, but can it play Doom?

        • +1

@TheDukeOfNukem: yes you can play doom rpg.

        • @Bigboomboom: I don't know what I was expecting, but that was better than what I was expecting.

That being said, 10 years ago on my 2600, Doom RPG was pretty dope.

        • @TheDukeOfNukem: in all seriousness, I play DOOM 2016 and Crysis on my Pixel 2, using Steamlink app. So yes it can even run Crysis.

        • @Bigboomboom: I can Remote Play my PS3 (and 4) to my phone and rock both that way.

But tbh Doom 2K16 on Switch is my preferred way anyways.

Big_yard is shady and I almost bought a Pixel 2 from them until I see how many negative comments about their "sealed" boxes are seller resealed. High chance of getting a seller refurbished marketed as brand new factory sealed.

So yes, I did went with Kogan for $80 more on the Pixel 2.

    Leaves warehouse in 1-2 weeks

Just pointing out for anyone who cares about delivery time.

Great price tho! I bought Nexus 6P 128 almost 2 years ago (dick smith) when it was same price back then. Returned it due to battery issue (goes flat at random percentages). Their (Kogan) customer service (via email) was very helpful so far… fingers crossed.

    • Yeah Wtf my 6P had the same battery issues. Then I get back from a month in Europe and find out there was a google return program for that month where they'd give you a Pixel if you were effected!

      • Did you get your replaced with a Pixel XL? mine started few months ago. I think the reason is Fast Charger.

        • Naah i sold it on eBay stating the battery issue.
I messaged Google and they said since mine was out of warranty they won't do anything.

Article about it here, says Google just fixed Aussies phones.

        • @camshandez: I remember this but I thought that was only for North America.

        • @camshandez: I called Google but they refused to support as I bought it from Kogan. They said that I have to either call Huawei or Kogan for a replacement. But they admitted that it was a known issue of the device. Let's hope that I get a refund or replacement phone for mine from Kogan.

        • @dealspider: see I called Google and purchased it from them day one (preordered) but I was out of warranty and they said they won't help even though they've acknowledged the fault as well.

Can't blame them since it was out of warranty but one would hope

        • @dealspider:

I had the same problem. Kogan refunded mine after I sent them a statement and a link to the class action lawsuit.

        • @camshandez:
They fixed my 6P by giving me a brand new one. Still going fine.

    • When I bought my Pixel 2, they also said 1-2 weeks leaving warehouse. Turns out 3 business to get delivered, it's a stock answer but they MAY have stock in their Aussie warehouse hence fast delivery.

Got excited until I noticed it was the 1st Gen Pixel XL. :(

    • Lol…. Thought it was just me

      • google are good with updates on their phones but yes, 2 year old phone won’t be updates past pie, but probabaly not their next release after pie.
