Woolworths Have Stopped Gift Cards Being Purchased with a WISH Card

Went to purchase a gift card today from Woolworths using a WISH gift card but it threw an error. Seems Woolworths have stopped the purchase of gift cards with egift cards.

Real shame…

      yes for years…

    • +3

hahah you need to step up your game

Which gift card did you buy?

    • +1

was trying to buy ONLY 1 Gift Card (VISA). Worked fine for years…

I bought two eBay GCs from WW using Wish GC on Saturday.

    😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😝😝😝😝😝

It's slowly being locked out as they update the software on the POS terminals. Looks like this deal has been ozbargained.

  • I don't get it?

Why would you buy a wish card with another wish card? Is it that the first one was close to expiring and you wanted to extend it?

    • +6

For example, you could buy EBay gift cards with wish cards. Given you could buy the wish cards for 5% off, you could effectively get 5% off the EBay cards.

      • +2

Oh right, sorry I misunderstood the OP. I thought they were trying to buy Woolies gift cards with other Woolies gift cards. Must be coffee time. :)

    • +5

Two reasons someone would buy one gift card with another gift card:

      1. To game the system and get discounts… E.g. 5% discounts

      2. Fraud and Money Laundering… E.g. Layering

I'd say the reason that they are cracking down on this is more to do with option 2 than with option one.

Source: I work in fraud prevention.

      • bias much

      • +2

I reckon it's more likely the ATO. Just imagine what it's costing to have people double dipping by using wish egift cards on top of the 15% discounts on iTunes cards that we're all using to pay our tax debts.

        Source: I pay tax

        • -1

          LOL what?
Im pretty sure you can't pay tax using itunes gift cards

        • +2

          @oneland: whoosh

        1. I have been given a wish gift card which I could use to buy an item for $200 in store, but its only $140 on ebay (using a coupon code), so I buy a $140 ebay gift card and save myself $60.
I can see why they are cracking down on it - surprised they every let it happen in the first place!

Source: I want to pay as little as possible for items

        • But people could do the same with cash. If they didn't want people buy eBay gift cards, why would they sell them?

  • This hasn't worked for at least a month??

    • It did last time I tried which was less than a month ago

    • I last did it on 04/08 and it worked then for me.

    • I bought 800 dollars worth Ebay gc on 27/7

    • Worked for me last on 29/7

I successfully bought some Red Balloon gift cards on Saturday (18/08/18) from two different stores using my Woolworths egift cards (from Cash Rewards).

  • I just bought like 20 ebay 50 gift cards on Saturday lol.

    • should have bought powerball and you will be lol forever

      • I have never won anything powerball. I ve won low divisions a few times with ozlotto.

Powerball seems to hard to try my luck.

Works in most stores, from what I can see.

Did you try paying with a WISH e-gift card or a physical plastic gift card?

  • +2

Looks like this rort is over. Got denied buying some eBay gift cards this morning at QV Melb.

    • thanks for posting this, was going to check today!

  • Really???? No more??? Dang it

  • Bought some eBay gift cards from Springvale this morning and it worked.

But I guess the loop is closing.

    • Noooooooooooooo

    • eBay GCs at Springvale? I've never found them there… or have they recently stocked them?

      • They are in the aisle, not on the stand.

As a purchaser of $1000's worth of eBay/JB/Kogan/Jetstar/etc gift cards at Woolies using eGift cards every month, this system update has come as quite a blow.
There's a forum thread over at AFF that discusses this, and the brains over there are also stumped.
The gravy train looks like it's well and truly over.
It is a sad time indeed.

    • +3

It's a sad sad day MN :( Reading that AFF thread was disheartening, I didn't think the day would come.

      • Ditto to your thoughts doweyy. Was great while it lasted.
If anyone knows a way to get past this, please share :)

        • gone are my 3ppd transactions.
was easy amex points for paying bills.
was bad enough ATO stopped accepting the V1, now can't even buy them for other bills…. sad sad day indeed.

I wrote some more macros only a week or two ago to automate paying bills using V1s… those 10-15mins I won't get back

Can someone confirm from their experience whether this new restriction applies to Woolies/wish physical cards as well, or just egift cards?

    • +2

This. Are we talking about e-gift cards only or physical ones too if anyone already tried?

  • After reading this…I just tried both way;physical card n eGC on ebay GC in QV Mel,
Both worked. (eGC one I got a box of strawberry with it tho )

    • Nice. My transaction failed at QV Melb this morn buying eBay with a Wish eGC but I tried it on a lone item. Maybe I should of included some of those cheap strawberries or avos that are on sale.

      • +1

Or something else you actually need and would have bought anyway :)

      • +2

eGift failed for me even with a trolley load of groceries.

        • -2

          Was this at Frankston Woolies?

        • @MathNerd: Why are you interested in this?

        • @JIMB0: Was just going off your profile :) That's the Woolies close to my work so your data point was a helpful one.

        • @MathNerd: No true ozbargain member would shop at that store as you have to pay for the parking.

        • @JIMB0: That is very true. I really don't like going to Bayside.
I like going to Karingal :)

        • What gift card did you attempt to buy?

  • which gift cards were you trying to buy?

  • +2

Can confirm it was declined at my local - 20/08 about lunchtime. Trying to buy EBAY gcards with Woolies egift cards. Has always worked at this store beforehand

Cant remember the message but something along the lines of "something something not allowed"
Note - was only trying to buy EBAY gcards in the transaction, no other itmes - so maybe should try with another item and see if that works, or try and split payment.
At that stage the manager was called over - so he gave me the usual "Cant buy gift cards with egift cards"
I'll return later again and try another operator

  • I think you can still do it at Big W.

    • My local one has just updated the POS system. Looks to similar to the new woolworths system. So I'd say no.

      • Ah ok, thought they were holding out on the update. Might still be some old ones out there?

  • I used a WISH e-gift card to buy a $100 eBay gift card at my local Woolies yesterday 19/8/18, self-checkout. Also purchased other groceries in the same transaction. Needed the store assistant to verify the ebay gift card purchase but it worked for me!

      This is OzBargain

    • Your loss

    • +2

Why’s it any of your concern if others do it? Oh wait, it’s none.

      • -3

I wasn't trying insult anyone, I was just stating my opinion. This is the point of a discussion forum.

    • +6

Coming from someone with 0 posts to their name.
This is OzBargain. You won't believe what we do to save a few pennies.

        • +1

          Hardly a few pennies.
          At 5% off, a $600 purchase equates to a $30 saving.
That is 2 hours (post tax) work for some people. Which means they can earn in 5 minutes what they could in 2 hours.

    • That's nice, save your self some hassle and don't bother with it.
I've never used this because it's too much (profanity) around.

But why would you be happy that other people are no longer able to spend their time doing this to save some money?

      • Maybe my wording was too harsh. It's not that I'm happy that other people can no longer do it, it's that I think it's somewhat immoral and taking advantage of the discount/promotion. Clearly staff members don't allow it and that's why people use the self service.

  • +1

Woolies gave you 5% disc on egift card to buy groceries from them. If you buy other gift cards the money won’t stay in woolies.

    • +19

When I buy a gift card for a particular retailer, I expect that to be treated like cash and be able to buy anything in that store. If there are restrictions, then it should be called a grocery gift card. But it is not.

  • +3

Should have expected this coming with the removal of the expiry dates earlier this year. I guess with the millions they made with unused gift card credits and can’t make anymore, they might have decided to enforce the T&Cs on gift card purchases. Obviously Ozbargainers, if had the choice, would have been happy to keep both expiries and ability to redeem other gift cards…

  • +1

if a gift card expires in 2 years and on the last day you use it to buy another gift card that lasts 2 years then that's 4 years on their books they owe you.. that's not good for them.

    • +12

if you keep a gift card for 2 years without using it you have lost your 5% in inflation…

    • Woolworths Gift Cards don't have expiry dates.

      • That's lucky for those people who stocked up with several thousand dollars worth.

  • Was nice while it lasted, and I only ever bought the occasional ebay and debit card via wow. Its points offers began sucking in my case since May, now certain to not get my visits until worthwhile emails restart.

  • Can you still recharge Opal card though?

    • I did a recharge a few days ago and was still working.

    • +1

I did one yesterday morning and it worked fine.

You must treat your WISH Gift Card like cash.

We can buy gift card with cash, so we should be able to buy gift card with another gift card

    • You can use cash elsewhere as well. πŸ€£πŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ˜‚πŸ€£

      • +1

Very good point… we should lodge a complaint because we can't use WISH gift card at Aldi

    • Can not. Check clause 6.5

  • This is sad news.

  • Woolworths Town Hall no go, egift card not accepted and the staff say gift card can not buy gift card

    • -1

Looks like they're starting at the CBD stores of the major cities and working their way outwards.

    • What gift card did you attempt to buy?
