What Do You Put on Your Sandwich?

Saw this deal on the front page: Mayvers Peanut Butter $2.50 (Was $5.00) @ Coles

I try to save money and bring sandwiches to work almost everyday. Cost me max $10 a week for my lunches. However, I’m kinda getting bored with peanut butter, can tuna, and hams. So, give me an idea of what do you put on your sandwiches?

Bonus question: do you always toast your bread, or fresh? Do you put leftover sandwich in the fridge? What kind of bread do you buy?

Chicken (Coles, Wollies) often marked down, salami, cheese and Coles Special Burger Sauce is my go to recently.

  • +2

Try the basics from international world.

E.g. Hummus or Tzatziki instead of butter you mentioned you do.

  • +1

Cold roast chicken, butter lettuce, the aoili from the cold section of Woolies (best mayonnaise ever, could eat it by the spoonful). Absolutely delicious.

    • +2

Sorry best mayonnaise ever is kewpie mayonnaise

  • +3

    Just air

    • +1

      Too many calories.

Surprised noone has said "smashed avo".

      • Only when cheap!

      • Someone said it in different words and using old looking avocados or something

      • Some of us are saving for a home!

    • Coles shaved roast beef with hot english mustard. Or leftovers from sunday roast.

    • Chicken & Stuffing

    • Bacon and Egg Mayo

    • Ham Salad

Not the cheapest of options but certainly my favourites, when I can be bothered making my own smoko sandwiches.

  • Shredded BBQ chicken mixed with chinese 5 spice, seasame oil and bit of knor. Then some Kewpie on top of that.

  • Bread Slice
    Tomato Slices
    Cucumber
    Salt to taste
    Cheese Slice
    Bread Slice

  • Modified Reuben. Need a toaster.

Corned beef. Sauerkraut. Cheddar. Mayo & chilli sauce mixed.
    Toast.
    Enjoy.

  • Go the Reuben, yum yum.

  • But costco chicken cooked and remove all chicken off the bones.
That will last you a week
Pair that with different types of myo/sauces each day
Lettuce etc as per taste and budget

  • ok Cook chicken and mayo bag of salad Tura mayo chicken and cheese and then there warp the whole world other ideas. a cheap sandwich press redit group talk about it.

  • I sous vide chicken breast (usually enough for three days) at 62c for 1 hours (or 2 hours if frozen). Dice and mix with mayo, hint of mustard, spring onions. Add this to rolls with lettuce. Coating on chicken is either just salt and pepper + sometimes a little garlic/onion powder and paprika.

Keep a bunch of the prebagged raw seasoned chicken breasts in the freezer so can drop into the water bath when needed and frozen rolls.

    • +1

      Chicken cooks at 72c…..

      • Says who? 62c is a pretty commonly recommended temp.

      • +1

When you sous vide you can cook at lower temps because you hold it at that temp for a long period therefore pasteurizing the meat making it safe to eat.

I wouldn't cook to 62c any other method or you'd risk getting sick.

The chicken comes out slightly pink, retains so much juice and doesn't go dry at all, it's so good!

  • +2

    Peanut butter and sardines.

  • +6

bread & sriracha sauce. nothing else.

    • +2

I too like to live dangerously.

    • Sriracha sammich endorsed! I too put that shit on everything!

      • its addictive. and kinda a bad thing, because nothing tastes good without it. so when you go out for food, and dont have your trusty sriracha bottle with you, the meal will just suck.

  • Grab some wholegrain wraps (Helga are great, 40% wholewheat) and put on some bbq chicken, carrot, cucumber, spinach and avocado. Add some cheese too. Tastes great, super healthy and easy to make.

  • Philadelphia cream cheese, some type of meat usually chicken, salami or pastrami, with salad from a pre packed salad bag at Woolworths and thousand island dressing.

  • +4

I get a picked pork from woolies (only place I have found it), its just liked corned beef but I find it nicer. cook as instructed with the added of a spash of vinegar, whole peppercorns (about a teaspoon), a couple of bayleaves, a tablespoon of brown sugar, you could also add some cloves and cinnamon stick. A friend discribes it as Christmas Ham. It last longer that the ham you buy from the deli. you could have it in sandwiches with pickles, tomato and cheese or chop it up and make it in a salad.
other thing I do ia have (yes I knw) but tuna, beans, corn and I then chop up cucumber and capsicum and have it on crackers (buy the tuna or salmon in tins when they go on sale or bulk buy from cosco.
I do a bulk cook of a stew or spag bol and freeze, can make it cheap with a shit load of veg and with the stew you could bulk it up with barley, with the spag bol I add kidney beans.

  • Chicken tenders with cheese and capsicum is nice. Also could add salad leaves to help you feel fresh at work.

Don't know how y'all survive with just sandwiches for lunch. I'd have to be packing at least 4 lavish (i.e. not just pb&j) sandwiches for it to be a reasonable lunch - which is going to get expensive quickly. And I'm not even a overweight dude, in fact I'm probably on the skinny side.

Work lunch is always my most expensive meal of the day, because I think I burn the most energy (mentally) during the day. Breakfast is cheap. Dinner can be cheap if I don't have sport or gym on in the evening (which I do most nights). I'd have to say rent is about the same as my food bill each week.

    • I also snack a lot. A handful of almonds a day, sometimes afternoon yogurt, coffee, tea, some biscuits, chips, or even more sandwiches.

Also some apples, bananas and some cut fruits.

My rent is around $400 a week, and I definitely spend less than that on food per week.

      • Snacking wouldn't keep me going I don't think. Its also not exactly possible to keep snacking throughout the day for some roles/jobs.

Oh, my rent isn't like $400 a week haha. It's $250. Somehow forgot most of you are probably thinking Sydney or Melbourne rent prices

        • Sydney/Melbourne is likely more than that. I'm in Gold Coast and it's about $400.

          Is ACT really that cheap?!

        • +1

          @Flimsy:

$280 in Adelaide for a unit with 2 bedrooms in a good location 8 km. from the city.

        • @Colombian:
          Sigh.

The crushed souls of my enemies.

    • +3

Well they do say revenge is a dish best served cold!

  • +1

    Mmmm open-faced club sandwich.

    • Sounds like Llamas with Hats

  • +3

Wow, $10/week for lunches. I was spending $8-12/weekday back in Sydney so I thought I was living cheap now by living off 500yen 7/11 bentos. I truly am a spoiled brat.

But more on topic, you need some luxury. Put whipped cream and strawberries in your sandwiches.

  • +3

Lazy: Tuna (plenty to choose from: smoked, sandwich, brine, chilli, etc.)
Mood: Grab store closing roast chicken (mayo, lettuce, onions, beetroot, tomato)
Chefe: Grilled steak, pickled onions, bbq sauce, tasty cheese, butter, hot sauce

Wraps are a good option as well

  • PBJ! 1 side peanut butter, the other strawberry jam.

  • baked beans or spaghetti out of the can, add curry powder pepper and cheese, then toast.
Vegemite and lettuce in a fresh sandwich, add cheese on pay day.
beetroot and mayo fresh sandwich, add cheese on pay day.
tomato, onion, cheese, great combo on fresh bread.
any meat left overs in bread toasted is a winner, can add chutney or pickles, cheese on pay day.

  • $1 white coles bread.
    Wasabi mayo
    cheese
    pickles
    beetroot
deli meat (whatever is on sale that week and looks good)
    lettuce
    sauerkraut

We have fridges at work, so I buy all the stuff at lunch, leave it at work, and restock as necessary.

    • +2

      Your office sounds surprisingly trustworthy!

  • +2

anyone for the Harold and Kumar reference?

  • +2

    the meat of my enemys

    • You sneak stuff out of their fridges?

  • BBQ chicken breast $8 from woolworths for entire chicken. Add lettuce, spinach, mayo, avacado and cucumber……

  • Garlic Mayo with boiled eggs, shredded chicken a sprinkle of crushed black pepper with white soft slices.

  • Depends, if you just wanted something plain/simple you can get spreads in many different flavours such as Ham, Anchovy, Lobster, Cheese etc!

Sometimes I'll just have a Pie Sandwich, or just Crispy Bacon is also nice. If you have a Sandwich Press at work, John West Tuna with Basil & Sun-dried Tomatoes flavour with Cheese & Onion is nice as a Toasted Sandwich, or Chicken, Cheese with Aoli or Mayo & a sprinkle of Mixed Herbs!

Yesterday I had a left over Chicken Schnitzel, Bacon Lettuce & Ranch dressing Sanga (is also delicious with Cheese & Caesar Dressing instead)

BLT is also very quick & easy(left over Bacon) to throw together & not to mention yummy!

  • +1

isn't it bad to eat canned tuna everyday?

butter and sprinkle some 100s and 1000s

  • +1

Tuna mashed with Heinz Salad Cream and topped with Siena sliced jalapeños or green Tabasco. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

  • I use 95% fat free roast beef from woolies with tomato or 333 pickles or lettuce or cheese maybe gherkin or sundried tomato, anything is good as long as you like it,cheers

  • Always toasted - sandwich press. I use Rye bread or Wholemeal bread.
I combine my spread with a bit of mayo and spicy chutney. Sometimes I use some Seeded mustard just don't use any spread.
A slice of Jarlsberg lite cheese from Coles Deli.
A slice or 2 of tomato
Coles Deli, whatever is cheap that week. I usually just purchase 200-250grams worth for the week. Mortedella, Silverside, Chicken etc.

  • +1

recently trying to eat healthy have switched to these sandwiches in the morning. I am avoiding any spreads or mayo(using Avo as base) since they are processed and fatty as well but you can get variants..
    - half avocado mashed properly with a fork (works as base and no need for mayo or other spreads)
    - boiled shredded chicken
    - lettuce - adds crunch
    - grated carrots, capsicum cut small
    - corn
    - salt, pepper

Variants and other things you can add - boiled potato cut into small pieces, ricotta, tomato, cucumber, crushed boiled eggs
if you not fussed about fats then you can add butter, cheese, hash browns etc

bread slightly toasted or you can use those roti wraps or pita breads.

  • ditch the sandwich. Make yourself a salad and have crackers as your carb source.

  • Whatever is in the pantry and fridge

  • I am currently on a salami and sliced cheddar cheese phase. I put it in Coles pane di casa rolls, however.

Coles have been introducing/marking down different types of salami recently, to keep it interesting.

  • Spinach, roasted capsicum, goats cheese either on sourdough or just plain old sliced multigrain is my go to for uni. It's amazing toasted too! Sounds fancy and expensive, but is surprisingly cheap with a Costco card for the goats cheese (or in my case a friend with a Costco card) and a good grocer for the capsicum.

But if it's cold and I'm running late or feeling lazy I just go for a tomato and cheese toasted sandwich with a little bit of mustard.

  • Bruschetta. Pronounce it correctly and it tastes even better.

  • Smoked salmon and blue cheese :)

200gm smoked salmon for ~$10-15, and Blue cheese $3 for 100gm will last a whole week…or share with colleage/partner to add variety during the week.

  • +1

    BLT
    fried egg
    Japanese mayo
    Katsudon Sauce (worcester sauce)
    Cheese

  • -1

    Ham. Why?
Because there's a mathematical theorem involving ham sandwiches.
    Deep stuff.

  • Usually just butter. Sometimes peanut butter but very rarely. When I was younger nutella was nice but now it is too powerful.

Cheese and tomato with ketchup is always simple and nice.

    Baked beans is also good.

Off topic question because I don't want to make a forum post just for it but is this butter or margarine.

    https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/647959/woo…

Also what is your favourite butter?

So far I like western star, bertolli sometimes and lurpak.

Coles I think home brand was ok also but western star is the best if I can't find allorie.

Devondale has no taste for me barely better than margarine and flora but I know it is more healthy.

    • I like Lurpak out of those. Try a cultured butter!

    • That's butter mixed with a cheap vegetable oil to make it soft. Different kinds of oil are used, probably depending g ontjepriceof the product. Not all vegetable oils are equal.

  • +1

Fried spam is surprisingly delicious. Cut into slices and add japanese mayo to taste.

Buy a bag of ugly avocados from woolies for $7 and eat one with bread a day.

Home brand bread is where it's at..don't buy instore supermarket bread. $1.50'white toast variety has plenty of fibre and goes with anything

    • +2

Bruh you're killing me.. fried spam with korean mayo and some rice is the bomb.. add a snag or two and you are in heaven.. well cardiac arrest heaven but heaven nonetheless.

  • If you're keen, fry and smash a can of mixed beans. Add some salt, oil and a pinch of sugar. Bingo, refried beans. They go well with bacon and tomato

  • +1

Egg sandwich but use Kewpie mixed with seeded mustard (I usually go about 50/50 because I like mustard).

  • +3

Processed meat like ham should be avoided as a regular meal

  • I'll just leave this right here: https://youtu.be/Hne5a_jkdyw

  • OK this is my fave combo: White bread with sesame seeds on the crust (Woolies Vienna or Bakers Delight), but must have sesame seeds.

Spread some buttery / margarine spread. Then a slice of tasty cheese. Put on some savoury ham (none of this sweet stuff). Next, hot salami, as hot as you want it, just 1 slice/layer. On top of the salami put thinly sliced tomatoes, nice fresh ripe ones and pop some salt and pepper on those tomatoes.
Finally, get the 'lid' of the sandwich and dab on a generous dollup of whole egg mayo, and if you like it hot, any kind of chili sauce. Close the lid and cut into whatever shape you like. And YUM!

But that requires effort, sometimes tuna, cheese mayo or vegemite and cheese toasted will do the trick~!

  • Sharp cheddar, pesto and tomato. Sometimes with some feta crumbled in there, and toasted. Kind of an italian pizza-ey flavour.
Cold chicken with tomato, red onion, and avocado.

    • tomato with melted cheese
    • peanut butter and jam
    • cheese and other spreads like hommus/zazuki

also have different breads not just plain white sliced loaf. I dont mind toasted croissant with just butter.
I like mines toasted fresh at lunchtime if your workplace has grill/toaster/sammy maker/chef.

  • If anyone around the house bought a bread maker, try making your own bread. Simple kits at the supermarket and it's fairly economical and takes little of your own time (possibly cheaper than regular bread, but you have to slice your own and it only lasts a few days). The bread that you make is really tasty too. You can intersperse that with shop bread, to give you variety and also alternate with convenience.

Sliced chicken, Italian meats like mortadella or slices of kabana. Sliced boiled eggs. Omelette or scrambled eggs.

Vegemite and cheese, peanut butter and jam or honey.

    Regarding the bread maker:
    - I buy a box of Laucke bread
    - I have a small air tight container for the yeast sachet that comes in the Laucke box
    - Following the back of the box, I add water, then bread mix, then a bit of the yeast to the bread maker
    - Come back in a few hours and carefully remove the loaf, setting it aside to sit and dry a little

There's some very nice bread :)

    • +1

Another cheap lunch, if you get a good cos lettuce and chop a few leaves, have freshly cracked pepper and salt, a dash of olive oil, you have a very nice, very quick salad.

Mix and vary from there for more lunch combos. (other vegetables, other lettuce, a bit of cheese, maybe a bit of tuna, etc)

  • I do wraps rather than sandwiches. Hummus, mustard, olives, sauerkraut, roast sweet potato, tomato, baby spinach/lettuce, avo. Fresh on Monday, toasted later in the week…

  • Dripping.

  • My personal favourite is

Toasted bread lightly buttered, 2 slices
Spread some aioli on both slices
    Add some shredded lettuce
    Add a slice of cheese
A few slices of a good hot-smoked pastrami…in Melbourne my pick is the hot-smoked Wagyu pastrami from Salt Kitchen Charcuterie, and I get it from McCoppins deli
    A slice of tomato

sometimes I replace the pastrami with sliced/shaved chicken breast or turkey breast, other times I get some good tuna, drain it thoroughly and and use that as meat…

  • My work supplies free fresh bread, ham and cheese. So free toasted sandwiches every day. Add to that the free coffee and I’m set

    • If you have the jaffal maker at home, bread, grated cheese, egg cracked into the centre, freshly cracked pepper and salt. Make sure it is cooked and bring to work the next day or so.

Slices of boiled potato with melted cheese should also work as a filler

Cold boiled potatoes are nice too and cheap.

  • Chicken Crimpy's.

It's also vegetarian friendly despite the name!

    (I am not a vegetarian)

  • Those little tins of flavored tuna, with lettuce and rocket from a mixed bag. Very easy.

  • Branston pickle + other

Other being, ham, turkey, beef, cheese, tomato slices or any combination of 'other'. EG: Branston Pickle with Ham & Cheese & tomato etc.

Back when I was a kid my favourite sandwich was Cheese Crackers & Apricot Jam. It's still yummy today too.

And I don't use any butter in either types of sandwich. Not because I'm anti-butter, I just don't feel it needs it. Tastes great without, why spend more?

  • I work in Woolworths deli, so I've tried every product in there, and for me the best filling is Dorsogna Jarrah Honey sliced at 0.7 with shaved Jarlsberg cheese and aioli.
P.S. I know these products are some of the most expensive products in deli but you can treat yourself every now and then.

  • Grill any meat and slice, you can add a good dressing, use sliced boiled eggs, sliced cucumber, sliced tomato, cold sliced potato, cheese.
