Xiaomi Mi 8 Flagship Phone Snapdragon 845 6GB+64GB Mobile Phone USD $399.15 (~AU $545.58) Delivered @ DD4.com

DD4XMMI8

This great promotion for DD4 4th Anniversary! Hope you have a good shopping time on DD4.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 follows last year's Mi 6, skipping the 7 to mark the company's eighth year.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 will run Xiaomi's custom MIUI 10 skin on top of Android. The new, updated skin will feature gesture controls and a driving mode that uses Xiaomi's own Xiao Ai voice assistant. It will also support portrait mode for single-camera phones. Other cool features include being the world's first phone to adopt dual-frequency GPS, for more accurate navigation.

It shares a similar notch design and vertical rear cameras to Apple's device. But the Mi 8's 6.21-inch AMOLED display doesn't quite stretch all the way to the bottom. And it comes with infrared cameras located at the notch for face unlocking.

The rear 12-megapixel dual-cameras will take pretty good pictures. On the front is a 20-megapixel camera using "pixel-binning" technology to combine four pixels into a larger one for better low-light selfies.

We hope you enjoy on dd4.com, and we welcome your feedback!

Why do they have to imitate the top notch? Why cant they be like the Vivo nex?

    • Which brand of mobile phone you prefer?

    • +4

Why do they have to imitate the top notch?

Because it's a good idea. It fills normally unused screen space with a camera and decreases the size of the device.

    • because all made in China

    • Where did you buy it?

      • I think from joybuy, probably not the same company is it ?

        • No, Joybuy is another online store. Can I know when did you buy your phone on Joybuy?

        • @joyee003: 2 weeks ago

  • I tried buying it but gets stuck at createOrder step when I click pay now

    • +1

Wait a second, let me check

    • Hi, we have tested, it's OK, please try again.

      • Can you please confirm @Vladdo's comment

        • Replyed, check

        • @joyee003: Kind of last question, what are the usual shipping times to Melbourne like

        • @SriAvi: 10-15 days.

  • Is this a global or chinese rom? My understanding is that if it's chinese then you need to unlock the bootloader and install the EU rom.

Xiaomi will force you to wait 15 days to unlock the bootloader.

    • +1

It's China version. You can check this way "Bypassing 360h wait to unlock bootloader" https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-5-pro/how-to/sol…

      • +4

If you go to the end of the thread, you'll see it doesn't work anymore.

        Have to wait 360 hrs..

"Edit: Looks like this method and using older unlock tool or older miui firmware does not work. Using old or new miui account doesnt work. You have to wait 2 weeks"

  • hi Rep: any deal on Redmi 6 Pro 4GB?

  • +5

Note you can't lock the bootloader after installing Global Rom onto a Chinese model.
    So no Google Pay!
Which is the only reason I'd want a phone with NFC.

    • what do you mean?

cannot flash a Global Rom onto a Chinese Rom? Really?

I did that on my Mix 2, Google Play comes with Global Rom

      • +2

@alexGoodwin, when @crno2012 said "Google Pay" it wasn't a typo. He means the ability to use the phone to make payments at POS terminals is lost. This would be a show stopper for me as well.

        • i know. that's why i said flash global rom to get Google Play, and then u can download Google Pay from Google Play. Mix 2 has NFC

crno2012 said sth. about bootloader, but flash official global rom don't need unlock it, or root device.

          OR did i miss sth?

        • +2

@alexGoodwin: Google Pay only works on devices which have a locked bootloader.

I believe you can only install the Global ROM on the Chinese model once you've unlocked the bootloader, after that you're unable to unlock it again.

You can find some posts discussing it here.

        • @moneybaby: makes sense, nfc for financial transaction you wouldn’t allow with a hacked phone and so possible compromised certificates.

        • +1

@moneybaby: using the built-in update app to flash Offical Rom, there is no need to unlock. I did that on Mix 2 without unlocked bootloader. I have Pay on it running. though i don't use it, too much hassle - as my credit card can tap and pay directly.

        • +1

There is heaps of misinformation and assumptions here. You can lock and unlock relock the bootloader through adb.

Google Pay works fine with Lineage 15.1 rooted with Magisk and stock kernel and guess what? Unlocked bootloader.

Only thing not working on my phone is speakerphone but I guess you roll the dice with a custom rom. Best phone I have ever had.

Currently using my Mi 5s Plus.

          NFC payments work fine.

    • +4

You can use Magisk for this btw.

I'm just sad about it not having a headphone jack. Would've bought this in an instant if it had the jack. Everything else about this phone is in top notch.

  • go with nokia on android one …..nothing to unlock, and get OTA updates from google,

nokia 7 plus will be next phone, band 28, nfc and android one and if you don’t like oreo they have pie for it already.

    • +1

Nokia 7 plus doesn't have Pie. At the moment only Pixel line has Pie. Nokia will get it next month.

Also Android One does not get OTA update from Google. Google send out update (later than Google's own phone) to maker. The only phone getting update straight from Google is pixel line. I bought Pixel 2 mainly for camera and this.

    • Nokia is dead but kudos for helping them out. Really missed the ball for decades developing new phones.

  • +1

No B28? You said flagship right?

I'm waiting for a deal on Mi Mix 2S 64GB.

    • yeah reading on whirlpool doing my own reasearch. If you want to buy an xiaomi the Mi Mix 2S 64gb global is the way to go right?

      • Yes, only the global version has band 28.

  • No microsd?

    • Only USB 2.0

  • Any deals for the SE version?

    • Add on shipping as well.

  • including gst? Joybuy has them for $504 then the gst

  • My phone has serious ui issues, snapchat voting glitches like a nightmare. The notch "hide" function is a disaster, works, but then doesn't work. It's just the Software isn't well tuned. That is incomparison with Huawei p10 plus. Both flagships, but one is just so much better designed in terms of ergonomics with regard to user convenience.

One example is search setting, when I search, schedule power off, it never shows, I have to actually go to battery, then additional features. Then find it. Then realise that the phone doesn't turn on all the time. Like 75% of the time it'd work, one time it didn't boot up at 7am and I literally slept in. 🤦‍♂️ 🤦‍♂️ Thank goodness I had my first p10 on standby which actually worked.

Also, the phone has randomly shutdown on me a few times before. Adding to this, it'd randomly decide to not respond when I lock the screen. I'd be pressing the power button on while the LED light is flashing telling me to look at the notification, but the screen won't turn on. 🤷‍♂️
One last one to top off the cherry. I can't record 1080p longer than 20mins without the device saying "error connection with camera has failed" essentially. I had to reboot. I know from testing that this probably is only my device 🤔 because I did the same thing on my friend's mi 8 and they had no issue…… I we're both using the 128gb room 8gb ram

So overall. (profanity) this piece of shit phone. Otherwise it's G. The 4K camera is actual decent. But I'm never going to ever touch budget smartphones who try and put a flagship cpu and think they're good. (profanity) they're bad. I know I'm shitting on them hard. But God dayum flagship software is where its at. Regardless of launchers. The integration of user usability is sooo key, that's why I'd rather get a budget samsung C series or J series with a snapdragon 6xx series cpu instead of the flagship mi 8.

Wtf how have I never noticed this lol

people seem to focus on hardware specs rather than software, yet software is what makes these phones work.

it’s one of the nice things about android one, the hardware manufacturers have less software to worry about (hardware abstraction) and google does the rest. then you load what ever extras you want from playstore.

it takes a lot of time and effort to get software right, it’s easy to do hardware and churn out new models as qualcomm does a lot of the design work if people use their chips.

    • This is what you get from a 'high end' flagship Chinese phone lol

    • Since your friends mi8 works are you considering sending back to the seller for a replacement?
That's a big downside for buying outside Australia.
Though I believe with papal, you get free returns within 2 months or something of purchase, they'll refund the shipping back costs. But websites like aliexpress only credit card so you don't get this offer.

After then, I guess it's up to the company to honour their warranty policy.

      • I got mine in Hong Kong so I dont think I'll be getting a return anytime soon. Their tech support is 👌, one of a kind. Also, if you have the device, never set it to Australia region if you want to use the facial recognition. It doesn't work, absolute pain. Should try and use the Hong Kong region. I'm sure there's a reason why, but I figured it wouldn't work when it was set to aus

    • check if u got a fake rom.

last time, a different seller sent me a phone with fake rom, even though the about phone page looks identical to the official rom. tons of glitches, overheat, random shut down, etc.

after flash to the offical rom, all problem goes away.

And no kernel source code yet :(

  • Tbh this deal isnt very good (*spectacular)

  • Anyone who tried this phone before can comment if this phone is any good compare to Oppo?

    • depends which model oppo and if buying local or grey …

      • I am actually eyeing on Oppo R15 as they seems to be of a great value phone. Was looking at it from JB Hifi so it is probably local stock?

  • Any gov spy concerns?

    • Better the mss than the fvey.

    Hi guys,
I have bought 128gb version of this phone. Obviously it has chinese rom but language can be changed to english.
Phone comes with few chinese apps that can be uninstalled easily. Having said that, you still left with some chinese showing up every now & then.
Phone is sold build with great specs. Loved the camera and MIUI as I didn't face any issue with it yet. I think this is the best specs phone in this price & definitely recommend it if chinese rom won't bother you.

    • Flash it with another ROM.

      • I will do it with the global rom once released.

  • If it only had a micro SD card slot it would be an instabuy from me.

A phone produced by the company without moral and ethical. God bless.

    • +1

LOL. Just which companies do you think are moral and ethical?
