Qantas Honolulu Rtn from Sydney Business Class $2257 Per Person @ IWTF

520

I was looking at flights to Hawaii for next March for the family on IWTF, when I came across what I thought was a good price for business class return on Qantas. $2267 per person for business class is a steal.
My parents flew Hawaiian business in May and payed around $5k each.

Good to see they got rid of the B767 on this route.

I regret wasting points upgrading to “business class” on that thing. It was basically an economy seat wrapped in leather.

Plus the return flight was sneakily marketed as Qantas QFxx but was actually Jetstar with no meal or points.

      • +2

If it was a QF flight you should have gotten meals, points, and status. I'd chase it up.

You should have. I've flown a few QF flights on JQ metal and always had points credited with meals & luggage.

They got rid of 767s full stop

Great price. 140 status credits each way is decent as well. Status credit per dollar ratio is about as good as it gets here on Qantas.

  • Nice find. BUT, biz Skyslopes on 747 (not A330 suites) for this route nowadays.

    • What does it mean - angled seat instead of flat seat?

  • +2

That’s correct. 747’s are flying to Hawaii with a bucket load more Biz class seats to fill, hence the price drop I would suspect.

  • That is a very good deal! For reference, the Friends and Family special for that is more at $2299!

      Friends and family?

      • Have a think about what the poster means….

        • I know what he means but it's said like everyone is aware of it

        • @UberIsCool:

Sorry I wasn't more clear, I'm glad you all figured it out!

          For your reference.

Nice, but I have managed to book 4 seats at $380 return each including entertainment and luggage during a recent Jetstar sale.

Can't beat value in that - and it leaves you more money to spend at the other end on hotels and entertainment. Its only a 10 hour flight.

Can't compare economy and business sorry, yet alone Jetstar and qantas

      • Yep. Cheap fare but it breaks one of my rules of flying. "Anyone but JTM" Jetstar, Tiger, Malaysian Airlines. I'd rather not go.

        • +2

A mate and I flew on Jetstar to and from Honolulu a few years ago for $500 return. Had a great experience - plane was pretty new, both flights were on time and had a decent amount of room. I honestly don't understand the snobbery when it comes to airlines. If I can sit in a chair and work all day then I can sure as hell sit in a chair for the same amount of time and watch movies on my laptop.

Saying you can't compare economy and business or Jetstar and Qantas doesn't make a lot of sense either. If I wanted a car I could spend $75k on a new BMW but personally I'd go for a $20k second hand Toyota. Sure the BMW might be nicer but I'm spending more than 3x the money. Reasonable minds may differ but saying you can't compare the two isn't really valid

Just my 2 cents, if you prefer business this seems like a great deal.

          @Pulseidon:

Absolutely. I don’t understand paying more than 5 times the price to sleep in a slightly more comfortable chair. When I think it’s a 9-10 hour flight, at that price difference you’re paying $200/hr for that privilege.

I don’t earn anywhere near that and certainly wouldn’t pay close to it for a short period of comfort. Horses for courses…. I’ll save that money from the flight for something more memorable

        • +2

@Pulseidon: dunno what chair you are sitting in but if it's as bad as Jetstar aircraft seat then you have my pity

        • +1

@Hoju: for people wanting to experience a one off or honeymoon or something in their life than it's a decent price. Plus sleeping over night in business class is amazing, you actually lay down and sleep, it's heavenly. Also lots of extra benefits with business, lounge access, service, amenities, instagram photos 😂

        • +2

@UberIsCool: ..and feeling refreshed upon landing at your destination instead of wrecked to the point of wanting to throttle your travel companions.

The old clunker 747's have angled seats so if you're tall or heavy, you feel yourself sinking. It's annoying AF and I dislike the QF 747 with a passion. I fly their A333 on a monthly basis and their J is fantastic. Their Y is also a great seat too. Very roomy. One of the better economy seats I've flown in.

        • +1

@Cyphar: it's a slight angle yes but I sleep well on it. Yes the A333 suites are the best though

        • nice rule :D
curious about malaysian airlines though, they're a full service airline, you still spooked by the one they lost?

i find jetstar has it's place in life, i'd personally rather shell out the few extra bucks for Virgin (though i hold status with them so my perks are worth the extra bucks) but for single travellers, travelling light & who don't really drink on a plane, the value's pretty good.

i did a boys trip from Melb to Japan last year on jetstar and was pleasantly surprised at how non-shit it was, though by the time the luggage & meal etc costs were all factored in, i should've just flown via singapore & met them there :D

          @Pulseidon:

Business class is heavenly, it turns any holiday from good to amazing.

The second the limo driver arrives at your house, all your stress goes away. There's no check-in line, and you get handed an Express Path card to skip the security queue. Once you get to the lounge, there's a barista to make you coffee, freshly cooked meals and even a gelato bar. Once you leave the lounge, you have your own jetbridge to the plane (no queues) and soon after takeoff are served a 3-4 course meal with cocktails, Nespresso and gourmet cheeses. You then change into your airline PJs and sleep for 8 hours straight, before being the first off the plane.

A lot of people "don't understand the snobbery" but generally they've never flown in the pointy end.

There are only 2 bad things about business class:
          1. Collecting your bags at the end - they never seem to come out first
          2. There are no gyms in airport lounges, so you feel like a fatty boomba when you get off the plane

A lot of people "don't understand the snobbery" but generally they've never flown in the pointy end.

I fly it all the time, often for work and other times through points. The elitist attitude in the FB groups is beyond astounding and the reputation of people being snobbish is well deserved.

Beyond comfort level on the plane, most of the services J comes with can be bought anyway. I flew with a Qantas Club membership long before I flew in J and the lounges in Qantas aren't half as good as you describe, even their crown jewel in HK. The opulence only comes close to that in the ME airlines.

        • +1

          @Cyphar:

Qantas Clubs are disappointing, but their business lounges are world-leading, especially those in BNE, SIN, HKG, LAX, LHR and PER (+ some of the domestic ones e.g. MEL)

        • @chillin222: Nothing about sitting in a seat for 8+ hours stresses me out to begin with so that aspect of business class wouldn't really benefit me. And upping the amount I spend on a flight by a factor of 3, 4, 5+ would not be worth it to me even if flying did stress me out. However, if you are travelling on a regular basis for work then I fully understand why those perks would be more valuable/necessary.

I'm not a member of the royal family either but I think it's valid for me to say that their snobbery isn't justified. Just because I haven't experienced something doesn't mean I can't have a valid opinion about it. It would be better and make my position more convincing if I had flown business class but it doesn't mean my view is baseless or meaningless.

If you enjoy it and are willing to pay for it then that's great.

        • @chillin222:

Surely you have all the room to stand up in business class you can probably do some squats and tricep dips during your flight? ;)

        • Why against Malaysian airlines? Lol

If you poor, fly cheap. If you willing to spend, yes better airlines and avoid the crap ones. Again, nothing wrong with JTM Jetstar Tiger and Mas.

        • @serpserpserp: I'm not sure the other passengers would appreciate it ;) I'd say the average body fat percentage in business is well above 20%.

      • +1

        yet alone Jetstar and qantas

I'll take JQ Business Class on a 787 over QF on a 737 flying the same route any day.

      • fly both airlines all the time, including flying business class paid for by my work..Jetstar economy on a Dreamliner is actually nicer than Qantas economy

    • +1

Been waiting for a similar deal to book the family, did you find it on here or do you keep an eye elsewhere?

    • +1

Agree, essentially earn 2k tax free for sitting in economy for 10 hours.

    • Yup am here in Hawaii now on similar. 4 of us including bags, food, seating, entertainment ~$1500 return with Jetstar

      Plane is dreamliner too

I've flown business to Japan few times for work

For this holiday I wouldn't pay $9K for us to fly business

Horses for courses, and it's a good price for business if you want it.

  • Can't find anything for less than $2600 on these dates?

    • Cheapest I can find is $2439.

  • +1

Will this trip help me get 2k FF points for the RM Williams deal?

    • Only once you've completed the flights.. you're better off buying some from the forums if you need them desperately.

  • +2

I don't know if I can go back to business class after chartering a private plane for me and my posse. Don't get me wrong, first class on commercial jets (aka sky sleeper-buses) is a good way to fraternise with the impoverished. Learn about the foot balls and such. But I like to have my choice of chef and pilot when taking a vacation. Horses for 3 courses.

  • +1

No one on ozbargain can afford business class thats why we browse this site =P

    • +4

Or.. You bargain hard on other stuff so you can afford nice things like business class.

    • -1

can't or won't are two different things… our family income is above $300K per year, I would not waste my money on business class (I do fly business when work pays for it though)

      • +1

300k, hang in there, I remember the days we did it tough on low wages.

  • We really like J on a QF 747 up in the bubble, huge Mk11 seats and only 14 from memory, side and upper storage, 2 fight attendants and cabin loo.
